- I show you biggest cause of fps drops (on good PCs) in raids and M+ and in general for users using weak aura packs.
I will do a follow up video in future on optimizing fps on mid to lower end PCs.
This video I wanted to get out asap cause it kills fps on ALL pcs from low all the way to the highest spec pcs. Guilds in RWF were even dropping to 10-20fps on Pcs with 4090s and latest cpu and this was found to be cause.

I've been on a huge bender this last month or so hunting down all sorts of performance problems in all sorts of surprising places. This model bug is the biggest one, but also I fixed that weakauras was using several times as much memory in its codegen as it needed to, which contributed to some stuttering when a WA load. There was even a bug i found with the DynamicCam addon which caused it to scan your entire mount journal every time you were mounted and any player in earshot gained or lost any buff or debuff (think about that one encounter in dawnbreaker dungeon where you have to fly away 😅), that one was crashing my fps so hard i couldn't fly inside of dornogal!
I'm really glad you posted this, afenar's aura pack uses model effects somewhat liberally and I know it's very popular.
Yeah I wanted to get it out there to users, and also to blizzard. I sent video to my friend on engine team to see what's up. maybe he'll even use your test aura :D
Another thing I think is a factor is the reported GROUP_ROSTER_UPDATE spam happening in instances. even when no one is joining or leaving group. it no doubt is having performance impact on base ui and addons performing any update code on this event.
Do you know if any of the dungeon or raid weak auras are cursed like this as well? Also does the sound implementations for weak auras have any additional loads since some auras I see are phattt asf but I'm not capable of figuring anying out.
@empty_rivers I only use Afenar's WA & have a lot of performance issue. Do you know any WA template's that do not have this problem ?

Incredible video, thank you for informing the community of this. This is a very common issue that afects many players, myself included. Even having a mid tier PC, i wasnt expecting to have such a mediocre performance during certain fights/zones. I didn't really understood what a "Model" is or what it does, but I''m thankful to know that there can be an external cause to blame for the sometimes bad performance of the game.

Would probably rename the video to "why weakaura is killing your fps in WoW" or something, as the title you have now makes it seems like you are going to go over the in-game graphics options.
That's fair. I'll probably record a follow up right away tonight to go over graphics settings and another UI bug that are also causing fps issues.
I do plan to go into graphics options. But this particular issue was in fact leading cause of fps drops amongst most raiders i talked to. graphics settings are more for lower end PCs and I did try to emphasize here this particular issue was dragging down even best of PCs (and of course it's also really dragging down lower and even mid range ones).

@@mysticalos have you had any reports of the game freezing up completely for 10-20 seconds?! Happens to me in Delves only, and has caused me many deaths. This expac has been the most technically buggy one for me, so many issues and poor performance.

Please dont spread this bad script, this only checks if there is a model in the WA, this isnt checking if the model is actually enabled. Here is a fixed script you can use:

I'm saying "Model" . Funny story to this. I was always pronouncing it "mod el" like you would any time you read word with model airplane or 3d model etc. But people kept correcting me saying "it's not same word. it's mode el here" so in video I changed pronunciation to "mode el" but maybe most of world was reading it mod el too :D I still don't know what context is correct for THIS usage of word to be honest but I should have just stuck with "mod el" since most (like me) just have always read/understood it that way. :D

honestly see the parallel. there is actually way more than you know. We have many personality differences, but quite a few parallel too, especially with life experiences. Plus I am another balding middle aged red head with a beard. Although i think he pulls off long hair and pony tale better. I keep my hair short despite how much more it shows when i look down, because it's lower maintenance.

Good lord, thank you for this. My pc is no slouch but, in raid, especially in larger groups, id go from 250fps to many seconds per frame.
You earned a sub, i went into TWW with ElvUI and some WAs, i had 45 fps in dungeons, it was driving me crazy, i tried everything, then i got rid of ElvUI and i am back to 120 fps, but i get stutters in some dungeons or fights, i think its the models, i was using one with it so i deleted it.
I think something similar was being run with ElvUI, its insane that that interface overhaul halved my FPS, so i presume it had similar elements that the game was not in conflict with just like the models.
I'm kinda shocked people use ElvUi still. Blizzard completely reworked the Ui and made it fully customizable in the base game years ago.

GJ man! keep the good work. I recently change my pc and game on raids running like dog shit. part of it were old addons. I am glad the problem has been issued my blizzard, since wow is only game I know where you bought a fresh pc and it still doesnt not work as intended. I probablu could lunch Wukong no maximum setup and it should run smoothly.

But your machine is running into really high temps 93C at 7:18 that could also be causing performance issues as your machine will throttle at these levels.
it wont' get much hotter then that, and it's only that high during video record due to maxing out literally ALL the cores for both the game AND encoder simultaneously :D
Did heroic earlier and on the first pull, my PC about died for like 4 seconds. This not normally! Afenar definitely getting in my guts with his WA pack.
you probably want to troubleshoot addons and WAs

If the "models" are causing a problem with WeakAuras, they must the causing problems in other addons too. I'm not exactly sure what those "models" are from the engine point of view but one thing immediately came to mind: player/target portraits in unit frame addons (like Shadowed Unit Frames).
Good point, I was thinking what other addons I use might use models and SUF didn't even come to mind. Gonna check that as soon as I am home.
I can confirm that SUF 3D unit frames 100% tanks FPS. turn them off.

here the big fps drop is when parasites spawns on ovinax, maybe platter has something like that
Nameplates require a lot of computation and plater is notoriously inefficient.
yeah nameplate mods can be heavy. but i actually only drop to like. 53fps in worst of it on that fight. with quazii player profile. but i also remove some things from his profile i dont use. lighter is better so i have a habit of killing off scripts i dont need.
@@mysticalos hey man, could you share with us what things i might disable on quazi profile to see some improvements ? I really like his profile ,but it seems like plater is doing some shenanigans
You can try to increase the update time of your plates. Some external profiles use 0.10. I changed it to 0.25 and got less stutter. Also increasing update time on Details/Skada can help

Let me know if change makes a positive change. there are other issues in raid too but i think they are topics for a diff video follow up to this one. But this one was most glaring among most raiders that i've seen since these days it's common place to run many raid and class aura packs that use models
That's really strange. I added a bunch of models for testing, but it didn't affect the FPS in my game like yours at all. I have a 4070 and an Intel Core i5-11400F, but the maximum FPS I can achieve in this game is between 80-100. 30-50 on Dornagal. none of my weakauras have those models btw
perhaps they weren't visible/loaded when added? might also just be how much spare load there is. i ran a situation where I made sure the load was maxed out before adding, so it would drop performance. but if say you are capped at 120, but have power for 140, then dropping fps by 10 wouldn't drop em at all if you weren't hitting your peak in first place? just requires more testing.
for progress bars it doesnt affect my FPS until the progress is visible
So what a suggestion delete these Wa ? Some are useful
@@Shamaniukas You can safely delete the models. Some weakauras with models do not affect performance or visual issues with the weakaura.

I encountered a similar problem in DF, when my pala WA used fx models for holy power. But I think, that is not the only problem. When I using a lowers render scale (any other than 100%, for example 98%) with FidelityFX filter for better final rendering, the game is also being lagging if any of model are renders in UI layer: WA, overlay characters on frames, character screen, etc... Also, modern water shader with full reflection also being lagging, lol. So, the way for me in this case - set render scale to 100% or turn off any models in UI and set the lowest preset for water. I distinctly remember how the WOTLK version started to slow down in the middle of the expansion after the release of the next content patch and the update of the game engine, so this problem are common for all wow versions right now.

Interesting find, didn't do much for be, but good to know! Funny that you mention that the problem comes more from Blizzard's side, I can totally see that being the case. If you play epic bgs like Ashran nowadays, you see how BAD the performance is. My PC is damn old now, but the hardware (with less Ram and worse gpu) ran Ashran pretty good/ok in WoD, but now it's a pixel show.
The environment and graphics of the bg did not change at all from WoD to now, yet there is an extreme hit in fps and performance there. I assume it is mostly because of newer spell/character models and partly because of nameplates. But what we could assume from Blizz nowadays, they test stuff with 0 addons and say it's fine. lol 🤷♂
What should I do if Im lagging on a 5600 & 6750xt? I want to mention I use 0 addons at the moment. Change cpu to 5800x3d because my 5600 cant handle cpu bound Dornogol?
Also, I’ll use your settings today. From that video where you explain I shouldnt use max background / foreground fps if my amd is using freesync. My display is also a 1440p lg ultragear that has gsync on it (freesync compatible) and I had all 3 fps settings set to 200 😂

What model Weakaura is everyone running on brood? Because none of my weakauras run it, and it drops to 30-35fps on heavy aoe in mythic, i've found lossless scaling to help with this, but i don't think any of the weakaurs already run model feature for this boss, which means the issue is still the 20+year old engine.
the engine has been overhauled over the years. but it still has work to go that keeps being blocked. other causes are elvui or tukui or player or details for some users. depending on profiles used and settings. likely models again
this started late in dragonflight, after one of the patches i had absolutely garbage fps and it's because my rage bar was using a model to make it animated. I purged all the models from my auras and boom, fps returned.

A bad weak aura can ruin everything. Me, personally, didn't have issue like that. Even with a high end PC I would be hitting 15 fps during raid pulls. What I've found out is that Details is using all of yours resources during such situations. For me, increasing the interval speed to 2 made me not have any FPS issues in any situation.

I knew Weakaura was doing all this FPS problem, also the long loading screens.
The only fix i've found was to remove some WA's but it's not always enough because i''m heavily dependent on them.
The other day i tried to do a LFR raid, and i was at 8fps the whole time... kinda crazy knowing i got a Ryzen 12cores and a RX6750XT that should be able to give way more fps...

So I don’t even have WeakAuras downloaded. I use ElvUi. I however am having this same problem with my FPS tanking. So what is the play if you don’t even use / have WA downloaded and are still having this problem? Thanks.
My main thing was the raytracing option. FPS only dropped in highly populated areas. Turning off raytracing solved all my issues.

I have a question regarding overclocked cpus. I have recently upgraded my ryzen 5700X to an overclocked 5700X3d version. My GPU is the AMD Radeon 6700XT. In raid when there are 25+ people my FPS drop to the dirt from like 140 to 20-35 FPS at best regardless if I'm using the standard blizzard UI or ElvUI. Is the overclocking affecting wow negatively in your opinion? I don't know what to do since my setup is not old and still have this FPS issues in raid. Any tip would be appreciated.
if anything over clocking usually helps unless it’s not a stable one and maybe you’re hitting thermal limits and throttling.

DBM shouldn't affect fps due to model issue anyways. Bars all use textures only. and weak auras have that option too (to use textures instead). but you're right that you SHOULD be able to use models without issues, that's a new bug since TWW prepatch.

Allthough this is some nice info for people unaware, the script is kinda missleading. Many weakauras have models assigned to them. This doesnt however mean they are enabled, which this script doesnt check.

This is definitely something that plagued me in DF (idk exactly when, but it triggered sometime during that). And it hits in such strange places. Alterac Valley? No issues. Southshore vs Tarren Mill brawl? absolutely tanks. Not sure if these are related to the WeakAuras still but man... Can't wait to go through my stupid amount of WAs and find the show models and see if this helps.

WeakAuras seem to be fine for me, it's Plater that's been killing my FPS more than anything this expansion. Using any plater at all just has huge drops
I get expected drop from plater but it's not much. I use quazii profile though and disable scripts I don't use. mostly just use it for his mob coloring in M+. but yeah nameplates in general one of most demanding mods.
Not only weakauras, any addon that has a 3d model of some sort, i use shadowunitframes, one day with my gf pc, which has the same spec cpu and graphics cards as mine, i noticed my fps way higher than with my pc on the same zone, after much trial and error i found that the 3d models for player, target and party was the culprit of my lower fps.
hmmm..... i dont use weak auras. only addons i have running consistantly is tomtom and healbot (and even healbot is "disabled" on most my characters since most arent healers).. either of them is causing model issues?
one day blizzard will assign 2 dedicated cores or multi cores for addon calcluation, right now everything loads on one thread...and 20 years later....we are in a world with multiple cores that WoW still doesn't use properly
that was supposed to happen with df pre patch. it got canceled because execs and shareholders wanted a q4 bonus
a friend of mine said, there are almost no weakauras with models in it, he has checked after watching this video, which is sad, i hoped it's gonna help 😢

Does this model issue exclusive to WA? Or does it effect other addon's as well? Also I've been getting a lot of random disconnects since the start of TWW sometimes the game will have massive input lag before rubber banding & other times it will just random boot me out & with the generic wow error code & i have to hit the reconnect button & log back into my character.
it affects other addons too, but which ones hard to say. random disconnects though likley not related to fps or addons unless you're freezing up.

Just saw your video and I'd like to say that I have a model on every single spell and bar xD I do not have actionbars, only weakauras, however I'm tanking the FPS with my 4090 and 7950x3d, so yeah. xD However, two days ago I got a huge micro-stuttering and FPS boost, not sure if somebody at the dev team has fixed something...
over weekend no one was working, but on engine team especially person I regularly talk to is actually on vacation, and if it was anyone likely to make fix it would have been them so coincidence? Ghost in machine? :D
@@mysticalos I've spent more than 80h developing that setup, honestly I don't wanna get rid of the models, since they look really cool how I designed them already. I might do a clean addons install, just wanted to ask, since I haven't done this since new xpack came out - is this how you do a clean addons install -
I put .old to the game files, start the game, and paste everything from the .old folders to the newly created ones?
most just rename entire interface folder when trying to redo their ui, and if it doesn't jive, just can rename it back.
if you mean wipe saved variables too, can just go into wtf folder then account then there are two types of savedvariables folders. the one in account folder, and then another in each characters folder (for account wide variables and char specific viarables) and those folders can be renamed or moved out.
@@mysticalos Cheers! Btw, have you experimented with more models? I'm using only 1 model, which is from the afenar addons back in DF, and the FPS decrease for the whole pack is like 20fps, but it's been like forever when using WeakAuras either way, unless I'm using default action bars.
for me it was nerubar palace weakaura pack it caused 25fps drop outside of the raid just enabling this aura (with the green eye button in WA)
How do you run that script? I tried putting it in a WoW macro and also importing into Weakauras and both failed.

Does exist some addon that will manage which addons will run in dungeon, in open world or raid enviroment? for example when i have normal graphic settings for open world and m+, and then separate for raid, i want only few addons to run in raid automatically ?
It seems the weakauras package we're using for raid (we got method & northern sky) don't use models
However i remember clearly losing fps on Heroic week on Ovinax - And during Ptr it was an absolute nightmare

If you want a visual representation then is there a way around this? e.g. i want my spells to show up and such. I've noticed it occurs for icons too not as bad but it still happens....
use texture or icon. there will always be some impact but it shouldn't be nearly as bad as models, unless you use a lot. at end of day you still want to make sure you're using only want you need and culling stuff you no longer need. using smart load conditions so when you don't need x it isn't loaded. and if you are making your own you're trying to use built in triggers when possible over writing custom ones that use more cpu.
Not to put too fine a point on it but I've noticed having an X3D CPU is amazing in Wow. Something to do with the sheer amount of space and textures and addons, the X3D architecture really owns with it. I know that buying a new CPU isn't exactly a great answer, but you can get a first gen 5800X3D and it works with the older AMD chipsets that a lot of people already have. Cheers (obviously you focused more on software which makes sense)

It's usually a good idea to buy AMD in general, but for whatever reason a lot of people don't understand that A) The X3D architecture allows performance in MMOs that far surpass normal processors and B) The 5800X3D can be used on old format AMD boards so it's a relatively cheap-ish upgrade. And just to be extra clear, the X3D allows good fps in scenarios that would choke anything else, even with a top of the line card, since its bottlenecking the CPU specifically, so you can't just like, get a 4090 and solve problems that way, even though it does help.
Quite true. wow is heavily cpu bottlenecked. in fact I've seen PCs with a new cpu and old gpu get better fps in raids than pcs with fantastic gpu but cpu that's 4 years old. cpu matters so much. it's actually often first upgrade i recommend to people because you can always turn graphics settings down, but you can never overcome a cpu bottleneck even if graphics settings are on a 1.
The problem is now 5800X3D is now End Of Life, and retailers who still have stock are charging more than a 7800X3D. Ive been looking as i have a 5900X in my system but dont take advantage of all the cores since getting a separate workstation supplied by my employer. Your only option for a 5800X3D now is on the used market and the gamble begins...
I have my CPU paired with a 2070 Super (so not new new but should be enough for WoW) and yes in raid encounters and Dornogal my FPS tanks to 29-30fps on 1440p. Have gone to the lengths of reinstalling windows/wow/addons/weakauras/video settings etc etc and trying to keep it minimal. I'm definitely convinced there needs to be a look at the engine and how its interacting with different CPU manufacturers, the definitely need to bite the bullet and implement proper multi-core support

I'll try this later as I have a custom built system to play wow on and for the first time ever I suffer fps issues. To the point I am considering whether or not I can mythic raid. This could be the reason.
is your glove in your right hand a medical thing ? ( if so can you share details ) or just something you like ?
yes. compression gloves for arthritis. they really help. reason it’s right hand only is because that’s mouse hand. the one that needs it most

off amazon i just subscribe and save with the dr frederick’s compression gloves. make sure you size em correctly. if you use em daily you’ll need to replace probably every 3-4 weeks.

Are addons like Masque or something like Clean Icons also affected? (textures =/ models I guess, but still curious...)
textures shouldn’t be impacted with same severity. of course every addon takes a little but it shouldn’t be such an extreme
I don't have huge fps issues but I do have some models on my weakauras. I'll remove them to see the difference. Hopefully this helps my busted ass guild
I've just tried putting the /run command nothing is happening while next to that I asked to 5 friends trying it and for them, a window is popping saying you are gonna run a script .... and need to accept. Any help please ?
first time you run a script you have to authorize it

I have a 5800x3d and a 6900xt and im having fps issues using atrocity UI and that have only 1 model on entitire UI. Still having FPS issues on high quantity of mobs
The comments have brought up an interesting data point. most users having fps issues no matter what, are using 5800x3d . I'm actually gonna pass that on for blizzard to test

Im running 1700x and having same frame drops during same fights. rest of game running smoothy

@@deadsyt me and 2 guildmates also have 7800 x3d and our fps seem to be fine (we have stable fps on mythic broodtwister ovi'nax which might be the laggiest fight in a long time).
but keep in mind that I'm playing on the lowest raid graphics since I don't care about graphics while i'M raiding.
that said on this fight I had some fps problem when the adds spawned and for that I "made" a plater profile which disabled the nameplate for the small adds (because there are like 10-15 on the first set ). I also modified details update interval to 3 second.
afaik the game runs better with a cpu that has good l3 cache (which is supposedly true for most if not all games but especially true for wow)
other than that if I have a stream open or other high(ish) cpu usage process on my second monitor then my fps halves in wow even though overall cpu usage might be only around 10-20%. the cause of this is probably that wow mostly uses 1(?) core so if multiple processes use the same core it might cause issue. (this might be false but it seems true from my experience)

I don't have weak aura and my fps are dogshit ever since TWW release. Have not had an issue in last 2 xpacs
