Kayak Mooching for COHO Salmon at Point Jefferson (Jeff Head)

- Awesome day on the water! I really wanted to make one more trip out to Point Jefferson this year to try mooching in the bait-thick water. It took me about 30 minutes to locate a herring aggregation, drop down a spinning herring, and reel in a decent Coho. Quick bonk and I headed over to a shelf that I thought could hold halibut. It did not...
I tried a different camera angle and I think I captured the excitement of Mooching a lot better this time!

Thanks for sharing. I'm always looking for halibut holes that aren't on the east side sound.
Awesome! Let me know what you find! I’m brand new to it but trying everywhere that fits the profile.
Solo fishing god bos qu thanks 🙏🙏💪💪 from Indonesian
Thank you! What fish do you target in Indonesia?
I like the flag you have in your net! Any worries of it tangling with your line?
Good question! I make a point of having it on the right hand side because I generally net right handed. So, the flag usually sticks out of the water just a bit when I’m netting.
So it has not been a problem yet. So far I do recommend it. Just don’t make it stick up too too much. I also spray painted the net orange for extra visibility using plasti dip.
It’s held on with gorilla tape and zip ties.
Very nice video and thanks for showing mooching method, especially avoiding line tangles. Did you kayak from Shilshole to Jeff’s Head and back?
Thanks!!! Ya, Shilshole is my most convenient launch site and I love kayaking big water. It takes me about 45 minutes to get there from Shilshole, which is a lot faster than swinging south to the Bainbridge ferry and driving up.
I fish near Shilshole quite a bit on my Kayak and attempted one time for Jeff’s Head but got scared away with Whales and shipping traffic. The furthest I got was a mid point.
Very fair. I take a ton of precautions and carefully monitor the weather when I head over there. I also can call for a ride if I get stuck on the other side due to weather.
Okuma cold water reel?
You got it! The 153d. 30lb braid and that’s all you need for salmon.
So you use the same rod for mooching as you do for trolling? And which is it?
