Thanks for watching :) Hope that everybody is having fun out on those shakedown hikes this spring! Or of course, good luck if you are thru hiking a long trail this year.
I like the cut of your jib, my guy. Good luck with all of your adventures this year! After a thru-hike of the AT last year, I'm just doing the Benton MacKaye Trail this year. However, I'm saving up for the CDT in 2025. My AT journey last year taught me just how little material wealth acquisition matters, so I'm working on paring down the things I own in order to move into a modded van.
I would like to make you a pack for your adventures next season. Dream something up this winter and let’s make it. Your inspiring and I feel like I want to give back.
Have been waiting for this video and it was worth it! Everything you said rings true. I’m so glad you did this. It took me 49 years of being a local to hike this trail-Just a couple of weeks before you. It certainly is special to me now.
Awesome as always Jupiter. Your vids are like a mini-escape back to nature. This area is particularly fond to me. I grew up for a time in SD and last year bikepacked the Stagecoach 400 route. From what I've been able to gather, some of the two routes overlap. Furthermore, the 2023 Stagechoach 400 is going on right now. Lastly, you were just a couple of days behind me when I bikepacked the AZT 300 in 2021. So, glad you found this gem of an area as well. Once things warm up and dry out, you might want to come on up here to Santa Cruz, CA and try out our vast network of local trails. Keep sharing the beauty, the insights, and inspiration mi hermano!
Hot beans, rice and Fritos that most have been a pleasant change. I really enjoy heading down to the San Diego area for my training hikes. The desert in the winter and early spring is amazing
Thanks for showing your hike it looks like a cool place to wander around and find some peace the landscape is interesting there with the Lower mountains and gorge.
Awesome trail! Didn't know it existed, and I'm sure I got stuck in those Anza badlands once on a wash..lol. Enjoying seeing your new "normal to me" gear. Now I can only give you grief about sandals. My feet would be raw! Great job and thanks for the vid!
I love SoCal in the early season (but maybe not in the rain this year!). I bike toured one February from LA to San Diego to Tucson and really enjoyed it.
I love this video, thank you, Jupiter. I kept saying to myself "Don't get your toes close to that cholla!" I've been enjoying the Anza Borrego this winter/spring too. :)
Ah thanks Jupiter! Enjoyed this video tremendously. SD is my hometown, it's been a while, so thx for giving me that view of the desert...love it there. You rock!
2022, i started my PCT hike from mile 151 and headed south to mile 148.3 where the PCT drops into the Alkali Wash. Then cross-countried down the wash. Sometimes having to skinny between boulders to get down to the dirt road at the base of Alkali Wash. The dirt road leads into Horse Canyon then Coyote Canyon. The road ends at Upper Willows and becomes a trail and turns back into a dirt road around Middle Willows. Continuing south the dirt road turns into DiGiorgio Road, which takes you to Borrego Springs. Take the CRHT/SDTCT to CA78 and take Plum Canyon Trail to Box Canyon passing through Blair Valley. From Box Canyon pick-up on The Mormon Battalion Trail to the landmark on S2 that marks the beginning of the Jackass Mail Route. The Jackass Mail Route is the mail route that goes to the Pioneer Mail (the forestry cleaned up the name) on Mt Laguna. Next follow the highway S2, ugh road walk, to Vallecito Stage Station County Park. This is that big green area you see from Desert View on Mt Laguna. Pick up the Overland Trail from here to Canebrake Canyon, which i was unable to follow. Resume road walk on S2 to Mtn Palm Springs. The trail by the spring goes to Bow Willow. Return to S2 for a short bit and take Carrizo Canyon. Follow the jeep trail then the foot trail and then slog through the cat claw and other thorny plants to a location between tunnel #13 and #14 of the Impossible Railroad. Scramble up the east slope to the railroad. Railroad walk 6 miles to I8. From there i hitched to the PCT southern terminus as i ran out of time. i had planned to follow the railroad to Campo and then to the terminus. That was Anza-Borrego from north to south to the PCT terminus, which makes for a 200+ shakedown hike and get your hiking-legs for the PCT.
I saw you inflate your Thermarest by blowing in it. One thing you could do is to use your pack liner as a pump sack. I did cut the Thermarest inflation "clip" from the original pump sack and I glued it to my nylofume. It's awesome I can fully inflate the Thermarest in less than two bags. Saves lots of time and energy. Btw why did you buy the xlite and not the Uberlite?
Looks like some very interesting and beautiful topo out there. I bet blowin' up that air matress felt very time consuming after several years of just laying down a foam pad. Beautiful camera work as usual brother.
I will be curious to see, at the end of the season, if your new gear adds to the enjoyment of hiking, or does not really make a difference for you. Enjoyed the video. Thanks!
I mean, it is an entire video showcasing very up and close me using the new gear (which is not something I normally film) But besides that, is 100 miles enough time to give a full review of anything? I think not, so that is what this video is. 'Testing new gear on the SDTCT' ! Full reviews will come after I have had some actual time with this stuff. Because anything less, would be misleading
Here in the panhandle of Florida, I've been hiking a handful of times and have just gotten into backpacking. I have found a 15 mile trail Point to point. And was thinking of using it as a there and back trail. Does anyone do this regularly with short trails?
I do yes! It's good to start small and build up, plus I live in the UK where trails are generally smaller (although one day I hope to do some or the major coastal routes and Lands End to John O'Groats (southernmost tip to northernmost tip of the UK.) But short there-and-baxk hikes are awesome! Sometimes you can find nice circular routes too, especially if you get a bit creative joining trails together :) Happy Hiking!
Really enjoyed your video. My brother and I just completed the first half of this trail a couple weeks ago. I'm a local and, being recently retired, was thrilled to finally be able to do this. Thanks for giving our little hike some national attention! Did you use either of the cameras you did that review video on a couple years ago? I'm looking to move up from my cellphone camera.
Base was at 9lbs and yea it was good! I'll hold off on most judgement but I think that this stuff is ultimately just easier to use, at the cost of the weight. Less thought needed with camp site selection and how you go about weather and such
I'm a native southern Californian but this is the first time I've ever heard of this trail! Now I'm very interested in it. I'd be curious to know how and where you cached your water?
I cached at mile 20, then got water at Borrego springs city, then pena spring (probably not reliable), cached water at plum canyon parking where trail crosses hwy 78, and more water cached at box canyon probably around mile 69.
Thanks for sharing! A question from a fellow filmmaker & hiker - for the voiceovers, I'm guessing you record them while on the trail, but would you sometimes write down or script the things you want to talk about in the video and then have B-roll footage on top? I'm doing hiking documentaries but the process of scripting, recording and editing the films takes me weeks and months, and I'm thinking that recording the audio while still on the trail would streamline and make the process more effective... Thanks!
Presumably new gear was provided by sponsors? Without causing any rifts, might viewers assume operation under the principle that if one 'can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all?' Or simply waiting for more miles before commenting? Plex-Solo? in the heavier 0.75oz/yd^2? X-lite 20"? Classic Snow-Peak stove? Pot? Titanium long-spoon? Montbell umbrella? Sandals? Pa'lante Desert-pack? and Sidebag?
All this gear was purchased around black Friday, aside from pa'lante as they are longtime friends of mine. I do not have sponsors at this time. As for the reviews, I would like to get more miles before saying anything serious, as a 'first impression' is not as valuable.
I really like your videos, through them I joined light-footed tourism. Now I have started my TH-cam channel, in a slightly different direction. But I also like long walks on the light. Your video is very good quality, tell me which camera do you use?
Thanks for watching :) Hope that everybody is having fun out on those shakedown hikes this spring! Or of course, good luck if you are thru hiking a long trail this year.

NH48 for me this year, thanks for the inspiration my friend. Be well🙏
👍❤️❤️👍
I would like to make you a pack for your adventures next season. Dream something up this winter and let’s make it. Your inspiring and I feel like I want to give back.
You have an inner peace about you Bro. I hope to achieve a fraction of that someday.
Makes me happy to see you using an air pad and a camping stove. If anybody has earned their luxuries out on trail, it is you sir!!
Thanks for what you do, Jupiter. You're attitude, your thinking, you are an inspiration.
I dig the voicover recorded whilst walking. It's a nice touch.
This might be one of my favourite videos you’ve ever made, you’ve got quite a nice calm voice to listen to
Have been waiting for this video and it was worth it! Everything you said rings true. I’m so glad you did this. It took me 49 years of being a local to hike this trail-Just a couple of weeks before you. It certainly is special to me now.

Good video! Love the Bedrocks. I started using them on the AT in 2014 and am now on my second pair. Hope they're working well for you!
That beautiful desert. El desierto. Absolutely adore.
Hot beans, rice and Fritos that most have been a pleasant change. I really enjoy heading down to the San Diego area for my training hikes. The desert in the winter and early spring is amazing
Peaceful, beautiful, amazing, as usual. Thank you 🙏🏻
Yeahhhh jupe!! killer video man
Hot food? Ha ha. Because of you I started cold soaking my old fashioned oatmeal with raisins. My favorite way now whether backpacking or not.
thank you for sharing the beauty of the desert with us!
Thanks for showing your hike it looks like a cool place to wander around and find some peace the landscape is interesting there with the Lower mountains and gorge.
Awesome...again !
Awesome trail! Didn't know it existed, and I'm sure I got stuck in those Anza badlands once on a wash..lol. Enjoying seeing your new "normal to me" gear. Now I can only give you grief about sandals. My feet would be raw! Great job and thanks for the vid!
Jupiter sleeping on an inflatable pad just doesn't seem right!
Comfort at night gives more energy in daytime
Juniper when you realize you forgot your camp sneakers lol, gonna have to relax in your hiking chanclas.
Thanks for reminding me that this trail exists in my own backyard of San Diego.
Thank you for capturing some great outcrop shots! Always love some good desert geology (:
nice, very inspiring. also, i'm jealous of the warm weather up there now.
holy moly the view is beautiful, patiently waiting for a full review once you test gears out longer!
Jupiter in 2026: Here are the best 10 fixed blade knives for bushcrafting! Just kidding. Glad to see you having fun and shaking things up.
You are a brave soul trekking out there in sandals. Those have to be like Cacti magnets !
I love SoCal in the early season (but maybe not in the rain this year!). I bike toured one February from LA to San Diego to Tucson and really enjoyed it.

Thanks for the video and sharing these less popular trails!
Love your vids! Keep it up
Great Video Brother! ❤🤙
Thanks for checking it out! It was fun to make, and fun is good!! Hopefully see ya again come May if you're around
Love this and all your videos! How has the hiking been in sandals?
Sometimes amazing, sometimes feels like I am endlessly on the verge of breaking a toe!

You are the only hiker I know who now has a pack filled with all luxury items. lol

Enjoyed this video.... Nothing wrong with trying different methods ,,, simple gear swaps are not necessarily 'luxuries' .. still very basic ..
Looks like some very interesting and beautiful topo out there. I bet blowin' up that air matress felt very time consuming after several years of just laying down a foam pad. Beautiful camera work as usual brother.
You need to look at doing the lost coast trail. I’m going in November
No one else on the trail? Great vid.
Just OHV people! No other hikers
awesome video :D
Any plans to come east and hike the NPT?
hi amigo, i would like to ask you what if any opinion you have of the silver ?
chrome umbella ???? tent seems good even for tallies 😊 !!
Yeah boyyyyyy
Love your videos JH! Has a thought, Has anyone thru hiked baja california? Basically starting at the PCT but going south to Cabo/end of the state?
I will be curious to see, at the end of the season, if your new gear adds to the enjoyment of hiking, or does not really make a difference for you. Enjoyed the video. Thanks!
So how was the new gear? Hot meal instead of cold soak? 3D wind/rain proof
tent instead of tarp?
Ikr. Kinda misleading title of video only to say go out and hike.
Is this where they are going to dump all the Bud Lite they cant sell?
I'm in Palm Springs if u ever need somthing...anything....thx for ur vids

how did you managed to not get stones between your feet and sandals?
I wear them loose, and occasionally would have to give my foot a good shake if a stone got between there!
Really enjoyed your video. My brother and I just completed the first half of this trail a couple weeks ago. I'm a local and, being recently retired, was thrilled to finally be able to do this. Did the gear work for you? What was your base weight? Nice vid

🔥🔥🔥
Have you ever done the foothills trail to table rock and Linville Gorge SC and NC.
No but I want to! Next time I'm in the area I for sure will
Will you be doing a video specifically with the results of the new gear test?
Yes, after I've gotten some real time with them to offer an actual review

I want to be more like Jupiter when I grow up.
@@JupiterHikes Thank you so much! I will check this out further.
can you tell a difference between the v2 and desert shoulder straps re: comfort?
Hard to say yet, but the extra space sure is nice!
Are those Luna sandals?
Bedrocks
Hot cooked food!

I just start talking, no script. I think you can tell when something is scripted as for me it loses the feeling
@@JupiterHikes Yes, it's definitely different. Thanks for the reply!
So how was it to hike non-minimal?
Slow to setup and slow to leave! But the tent was fun, and stove was fun
Any idea where I can get a map for this? REI?
Gotta find a gps track online. But as stated in the video I'm not sure I'd exactly recommend this route, it's a lot of just walking dirt roads
What kind of tent is that?
See the drop-down video description - it's a ZPacks Altaplex.
Zpacks altaplex! I'm 6'2 so this is good for the tall, otherwise I'd probably go with the solplex or something
