Hi Figboot, nice presentation congratulations !
Two suggestions if I may :
1- When the piston rod is pulled out and screwed fully in the piston one should preferably turn further till radial backup of the piston teeth against the ""stick-slip breaker cam" on the titanium barrel enclosure screw. Doing so your will see the piston move 1mm forward ensuring the piston movement occur jerk free.
2 - Avoiding ink spillage one should remain holding the pen over the ink pot till the piston is anchored, the rod is pushed back in the barrel and the filling knob is screwed back on again.
Wishing you lots of writing pleasure with you KS Bulkfiller
    Francis ( aka fountainbel )

Thanks for the info, Francis. Yes...that burp was my fault, not the pen's. And yes, I didn't realize it until it was pointed out by an eagle-eyed viewer that I had failed to engage the piston properly after inking up. I'm enjoying your pen very much!

I almost bought one of these in the same configuration but when I got to the end of the ordering process the VAT and UK post office handling charge killed it for me. There are video posts showing how the pen is made which is excellent engineering. I love this pen very much its quite apart from every other pen I've seen. .
Thanks for another review and the work you put into making them.
Best wishes to all pen people

17:38 , the burp www because when the rod moves through the chamber full of ink, it's bound to spill some. So that's why it burped not anything else

If it is a Bock nib unit, you should be able to pull the nib and feed out of the unit rotate them to you desired position (facing where the clip will be) and set the nib and feed back into the nib unit.

Hi David, I am a huge Conid fan, I own a Kingsize Flattop Bulkfiller (I got a black cap because the ink splatters in a clear top make me CRAZY). Anyway, two quick points about your review, and them a comment: 1) the cap at the top of the top unscrews, and you can then rotate that clip to any position you desire. So in fact, it is not misaligned. 2) The burp you experienced upon filling is explained in the supplied instructions: once the pen is full, and you disconnect the rod from the piston, when you push the rod back into the ink reservoir, it naturally pushes a few drops out the feed. You are supposed to push the rod back into place while over the ink pot. Then my comment: I bought my pen with the titanium Block nib, and it is AWESOME. Flexy but firm, smooth as silk. IMHO it's the only nib to go with on a Conid. Thanks for the review and reading my comment.

Is there a pen that's like a bulk filler, except at the end of the fill you just unscrew the rod from the pen, allowing you to have eye dropper-like capacity and a totally clear ink barrel without the additional hassle of eye dropping?

It seems Conid has gained some popularity over the last year or so and I think it's well-deserved.
I have a Regular size Streamline, which is the model with rounded ends, and I got it with a titanium broad to match the hardware. I love it and have used it daily for over a year and a half.
I like the Regular because it's almost exactly the same length as my MB 146, which for me is the perfect size.

Hi David - Thanks for doing this review, it's made me want one even more now, although I'm leaning more towards the Minimalistica or Regular (I love the look of the clear section that you can get with those models), and a 2.5 ml ink capacity although it's less than the 3ml you get with the Kingsize, it's still more than I'll ever likely need.
One thing I found that brought a smile to my face, when you mention that it's now taking a really special pen to impress you these days - for me, I've gone the other way completely, it's the simple pens that have made my day lately. I bought my first Lamy Safari, and a Himalaya from FP Revolution recently, both $30 or so pens, and I love using them, might be something to do with lesser expectations. Honestly though, they're as much fun for me as any of my pens costing orders of magnitude more, and way less fussy (ok - the Lamy, if that's an EF nib then I'm the King of Siam.. but that's a whole other story).
Hope you had a great Christmas, and I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us in the New Year.

The nature of buying stuff is that there is always something better. So eventually you need the MB Hitchcock, even tho it was declared just too expensive only a couple of years prior.

Excellent review. I currently own a Minimalistica with demonstrator barrel and a CAISO Kingsize demonstrator both with fine titanium nibs. They are among my all time favorite pens. I am seriously considering another Kingsize in polished ebonite.

  • @Innosint

Figboot, actually, at 17:30 it's not your fault, it's the design of the pen. When the rod gets pushed forward, there will be a very small amount (3 , 4 drops) of ink getting pushed out of the ink chamber due to the physical volume the rod displace.
On their how to video, the creator mentioned it's recommended to hover the pen above ink well while you pushed in the piston rod to catch any ink coming out.
From the video, it looks like the fit and finish of the Kingsize is A LOT better than the minimalistica... kinda of make me want to get its larger brother now.

    • @TheWatchEnabler

For a pen that calls itself super-engineered, that's a sad state of affairs. "Enjoy your new McLaren, sir, but be sure to put a pan under it when you start it becasue it drops a pint of oil when you do."

  • @Gregwisconsin
    @Gregwisconsin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

That bad boy is a beast! What a fine piece of engineering indeed. Question: does the gasket on the end of the plunger rod seal the front chamber when it is screwed down for writing and after a full fill? It would seem that if it were it would act like the old “travel safety gasket” on the TWSBI Vac-700 and have to be cracked open a smidge to let ink flow from main chamber. I agree with you totally that the tool set should be included. Also, no, it is not being picky that any little detail that bothers you is not made perfect. After all when you spend that much it ought to be “fitted” to your every desire. Thanks for your review; it was thorough and clear. Now to start saving for one of these guys... Season’s greetings.

    • @FigbootonPens
      @FigbootonPens  7 ปีที่แล้ว

It creates a seal between the two chambers, so once the forward chamber is depleted, you crack it open to let more ink in...just like a Vac700.

Thanks David for another great review and Merry Christmas! I like you have added the Kingsize to my cart on many occasions but still haven't pulled the trigger yet, but am definitely contemplating in doing so soon. Just a heads up, that burp you had from other videos I've seen prior to yours, when you disengage the piston rod from the o-ring and gently push the rod back down, the thickness of the rod (albeit small) is enough to displace air/ink and will cause the nib to burp, so I've seen others suggest you should do this still when over the ink bottle until the rod is fully back and the end cap screwed down. Then you and wipe off the nib/feed and you won't have any burping going on. On some other videos I've seen a bit of ink shoot out from the nib when pushing that piston rod back down. I have tried a couple of Minimalistica's with Steel nibs and they seem rather nice but like you my heart is in the Kingsize Bulkfiller with a Gold nib. It's a shame they've swapped the clear feed out for the black feed, I hope that returns soon!

Thank you, David, for this interesting review. The Conid is way out of my league but it's nice to see such a hi-end product. Your eye for detail amused me at 14:15 but what I found OTT were the options to have the box engraved and the authenticity 'plaque'. Overdoing things too much, in my view.

I have a Minimalistica with a steel nib, I second everything that you say in the review. It buying process was great, the pen writes wonderfully. It has become one of my favorites. My nib is a steel broad oblique stub that was done by Conid and, as noted, it is a wonderful writer. This is a pen brand every enthusiast should consider.

I love my Kingsize and Regular Bulkfillers! I have a broad rhodium plated gold nib for my Kingsize which is the exact same configuration you have (titanium flat-top demonstrator), and it's great! I immediately bought it once they released a model without the CAISO. The price difference without the CAISO was the difference for me, and I also just wasn't crazy about the CAISO system anyway.
Werner was great both times I was getting my Bulkfillers and for the other stuff I've bought through them, especially when I was requesting something irregular!

I noticed that when filling up the pen, you didn't pull the piston all the way back and it didn't lock in place, it was just below the mechanism. Great review! Those conids are gorgeous, I have my eye on the regular bulkfiller. I'd rather get the titanium nib than the gold!
    Cheers!

In case you consider another pen from this company, you should definitely take a look at AntwerpPen - red with silver "scales", fabulous material.
In case of Kingsize I was a bit sceptical about too large nib - for my writing and my hand could be not so convenient; model Regular is perfect. Recently I have had to leave the pen for 12 days and it started immediately from the first touch, no drying at all!

I own 2 Kingsize Flattops (a demonstrator and an orange Fontoplumo SE), as well as a Minimalistica. You do know that the cap finial unscrews (very easily), don’t you? Conid likes to align the cap logo with the clip. Looking down from the top, with the clip on top or forward, the black of the logo should be on the left and the white on the right. Conid clips rarely ever line up symmetrically with any of the cap band typography. It’s rare that they ever center on the Conid logo itself. Look at the photos on their web page to see what I mean. When you unscrew the cap finial you can reset the clip to true north. (Also see Conid’s videos on TH-cam to see how to completely take apart their pens).
BTW, I very much enjoy all of your videos. Thank you. (See me on IG @penupman).

Why not just open a review like this with some nice close shots of this beautiful object, and mentioning the cost? At 6 min or so you finally actually show the pen for about 1 sec and then quickly put it down again. And you might want to mention that it's extremely expensive at about $1000. Honestly I didn't get through the review to the point where you talk about the price. I mean I am totally willing to sit through a 20 min pen review, if it were organized and to the point. This video is the exact opposite of that.

This pen is a bad joke, Seven hundred dollars for seventy-five cents worth of acrylic and a steel nib. The fill system is also a joke. It's a gimmick for people with too much money and too little sense, as my grandma used to say. n acrylic pen with a steel nib for seven hundred dollars. This is dumber than a screen door on a submarine. It isn't just a joke, it's an intelligence test. If you even think about buying this idiotic pen, you flunk the test.
Unless you only want to change inks about every third blue moon, a pen that holds this much ink is silly. But if you do actually have a need for a pen that holds a LOT of ink, just buy a large eyedropper pen.

Oh, just $700-900? 😂 Why do people think that's an acceptable price? It doesn't seem like the materials and production would cost that much. It doesn't even seen like an amazing engendering achievement to produce a fountain pen :/ Smartphones are more impressive in terms of technical achievement, many things are nowadays but fountain pens seem like pure snake oil.

At this price point, it is more than just a pen. Value is very subjective. Think of it like art. Paints are extremely inexpensive. Same for a canvas. Have you ever walked through an art museum and seen a painting you felt didn't belong there? You thought to yourself, why on earth is THAT in a museum? The next person that walks by might feel a strong connection to that piece of art and feel that it is worth millions. It might not be a $900 pen for you...but it might be for someone else.

Figboot on Pens, I think you're right in a way but I still wish high quality pens would be more accessible considering they're actually really pretty like a work of art. I think if they can make Pilot Varsity pens as cheap as they are with modern production I think expensive pens could be cheaper with the exception of pens that are made of rare and expensive materials like the Visconti Homo Sapien (made of lava rock). That's my opinion.

When someone looks at your written page, no one knows if your pen cost $1000 or $2.95. I am glad you like this pen but there is no way on the planet I would pay $700+ for a plastic pen that's NOT a one off hand made piece. Even solid silver's spot price on that would make the materials worth about $15. I know value on fountain pens is in the eyes of the beholder, so this isn't meant to be criticism. It's just not a pen I would pay for.
