High angle C/U shot of a hand spooning out pink powder from one of many glass jars surrounding a white working area on a counter. Powder is poured onto scales and measured. Then it is spread across the white working area. High angle shot of different colour powders being mixed. C/U shot of the face of a young woman wearing a hat. C/U shot of different colour powders being mixed.
This is part of a difficult process of making face powder to match the skin colour of an individual. Young woman wearing hat, wants to have a face powder to blend into her skin perfectly, so the beautician specialist mixes it for her. M/S of a girl watching the beautician mixing different colour powders. C/U of the face of the beautician lady. C/U shot of the face of the girl waiting for powder to be made. C/U shot of the mixed powder being poured into a special silver 'scoop' with a handle. M/S of a beautician putting the 'scoop' under something looking like an espresso machine. It is some kind of a press. High angle C/U shot of the beautician's hands operating the machine. Machine is called compact-sized disc and the usage procedure is the same as with the espresso machine.
C/U shot of the pressed powder being taken out of the machine and placed into powder box. C/U shot of the girl smiling while receiving ready made powder from the beautician lady.

My first job in 1966 was in a large high-end department store mixing face powder just as shown. We kept individual client cards with the woman’s personalized formula. I also used a powder press just like the one shown.

@@ٴٴٴٴ_0 In some ways it was better and in some ways it wasn’t that great especially for working women. I think it was the Golden Age of retail when you had real customer service. Although, we were paid less than men, had to put up with grabby men who thought it was their right to handsy and I was an average looking married 20 year-old. Back in the day, it wasn’t considered sexual harassment, it was just guys being playful and female employees were fair game. I had to push-off several supervisors. I made it clear that I was a very happily married person and not that kind of woman. By the way, I always dressed professionally and conservatively, following the company’s strict dress code so there was no provocative apparel or mixed messages sent by me. It was case of some nasty men flexing their power over individuals who couldn’t afford to make waves. Much like a Donald Trump philosophy, “grab them by the p----“ because you can and they are powerless”. Beside it was the age of the Good Old Boys Club where they covered for each other. All in all, I’ll take now over then!

MayorOfMoetown There would have been more pollution, coal fires were still common, leaded petrol had yet to be banned, and industry had yet to have the regulation it does nowadays. Things are a hell of a lot better in that regard, despite how many cars are on the road these days. I don't know about food, on the one hand there are less artificial things used in food these, on the other people had far healthier diets in general (less sugar, more fat, vegetables probably about even.)

I use to do this when I worked in the cosmetics dept at a dept store. A professional rep of this one company would occasionally come in and women would have their perfect shade broken down & put on a file card. When they needed more, they'd come in, we'd pull their card and mix up their formula. The colors weren't that vivid, more like different shades/tones of beige. The blending part took awhile, 10-15 mins. But it was all loose powder, we didn't press it.

I think she was just observing the woman's skin as she mixed to make sure the colors matched. Looking friendly was the last thing on her mind, she was just concentrating. Some people are very serious when they work. Every once in a while I can't concentrate on an important or complex task and focus on smiling or small talk, it requires all my attention and focus, and the customers will see me go silent and my face flat, as my mask falls away until the task is done, then I can resume being friendly. Sometimes you just have to tune someone out to the point you can't put forth simple niceties. Also the customer watching her looked a bit annoyed at first too.
