  • This video is simple and general instruction how to do simple maintenance for "mini Hi-Fi compact systems", (book shelf stereos / desktop stereos). Many common problems are caused by dust getting inside the device. No matter if the device have disc changer or not, dirty and dusty optical component (cd reader) can cause problems with playing music. Same way the dirty tape head can cause problems with cassette decks. I will explain how to open these devices without breaking anything, and I will show witch parts are most important to get cleaned.
Device I'm working on, is Sony, but most mini Hi-Fi stereos have similar type of design and basic components. Work your way inside the device carefully so that you can find all hidden screws and plastic clips and other fastening features.
    Side note:
I'm a mechanical engineer, but what it comes to electronics, I'm mostly self-learned. Do not try to fix your electronic devices if you're not sure what you're doing. If you handle electrical devices carelessly, you may get electrical shock or cause malfunction to the device.

Usually it's good way to start by crossing off simple things: test if something works, just the radio, or just the cd, or just the cassette. Then test with different cd, different speakers etc. after that next thing is to look inside and check that all cables are in place. Also visual inspection gives a lot of information, one expanded capasitor may cause whole device to be mute.. good luck finding the problem of your device.
