  • Hi my name is Kathleen Laurel Sage and I am a textiles artist, tutor and designer with 20 years experience.
    Video description
    Hi all and welcome to a new year!
    First off sorry there has not been a video for a while as we have had a new addition to our family. My Granddaughter was born over Christmas and we are settling in to a new routine and enjoying our time spent with her.
    This weeks video was a requested one. You asked for an extension to the traditional Dorset buttons so today we are looking at trees and flowers. We explain how to add the spokes correctly and embellishing with cheats French knots. Hope you enjoy it!

    Oh this is terrific. Thanks so much. Now the only thing left for me...is to get busy and do it. I'm a bead weaver so the addition of beads will certainly add to my work. Thanks again.

    Love this and am about to try it now! I noticed on a couple of the buttons you had a little scalloped bit - looked almost like a crochet border. Do you have a video for how to achieve that?

    Loved this video!! But I was hoping you’d show how to do the ruffle around the outside of the circle. You sort of showed how to put beads there, which is great, but I’ve been looking all over for instructions on putting the ruffle around. Do you already have another video showing that instructions?? Please give me the name or links if you have one. But can’t wait to try this tree and flowers for now. Thanks again 😊

    Loving these. Your work is so neat. On an ordinary plain Dorset button I can never make the central hob neat enough before I start to weave but I think by doing trees I can alleviate that. Beautiful button designs and thank you for sharing.

    • @carollou7653
      @carollou7653 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've only made one "wheel" button so far and I also had trouble getting my hub centered. It was close though! I guess we need more practice. :) I'm loving your thought about trees as well. Happy stitching!

    I use a lace netting shuttle for the casting, then I just unravel the next length of thread needed, cut it off and add a needle -- saves a lot of time and aggravation, and has the same result.

    I just watched this with my mum, who was fascinated by the buttons...and we were both wondering something a bit weird...how many blanket stitches did you end up having on that button? I know every different ring will be different, but we're just weirdly curious about stuff like that...plus its a good way to guage how much patience one would require! lol

  • @amarna88
    @amarna88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    These are so beautiful and I am inspired to have a go! I was just wondering about how they are used - for example, can they be made into brooches? How would you go about attaching a back without detracting from the intricate lacy effect? Thank you for any advice.

    • @kathleenlaurelsagetextiles4432
      @kathleenlaurelsagetextiles4432  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes they can be turned into brooches by simply mounting the finished ring on to a card or leather circle cut to exact size of ring. The brooch clasp can then be attached to this circle before you glue it to the back. i also use them on birthday cards t like minded people and within other embroidery projects. ive also made necklaces from them as well. have fun
      warm wishes
      Kathleen

      Yes i would use all six strands for maximum coverage. Then once you have made one try using three strands. Also perle DMC thread is very good or crochet/ lace cotton.

    • @kathleenlaurelsagetextiles4432

      I tend to use a large eyed blunt ended tapestry type needle to do the wrapping and button holing of the ring and then change to sharps sewing needles when decorating them with embellishments of beads or French knots. x
