Thanks for taking the time to film despite a long, exhausting day. Especially taking the time to spotlight coach and cafe equally.

Nice surprise to see something fairly local to me! I'd like to try this but as I live in Northern England it's not particularly useful to me! Also on my list is the Night Riviera which runs from London down to Penzance in the SW tip of England.

Not every review of this train has been as positive as yours. Many find the "catering" to be as inadequate as you, and some found the motion of the train to make sleeping difficult. Cabin temperature has also been a problem. Still, it's an experience worth trying.

The Caledonian Sleeper coaches are built by CAF of Spain
The British Rail Sleeper coaches are still in service with the Night Riviera on Great Western

Unfortunately these modern trains are really very basic... the facilities are pretty much like flying economy.
Gone are the days of "silver service" and the attendant bringing you freshly brewed tea or coffee to your cabin wearing a friendly, good morning smile.
A few years ago, I took the Premier Classe overnight service from Cape Town to Johannesburg.
The train consist included two restaurant cars, a kitchen car and two club cars.. (as well as all the sleepers and staff cars).
Lunch comprised of three courses, and dinner was a selection of five. Breakfast next morning was equally as special with your order taken by a waiter; all meals freshly prepared.
There was also provision to take your car in two special wagons on the tail end of the train.
It's a 1500km journey and took about 28 hours... a fantastic experience which I will always remember.

I hope Europe does more long distance HSR similar to Amtrak… Especially since most of their tracks don’t have to worry about freighters. I would love going High speed for 48 hours lol great vid!

    • @bahnspotterEU
      @bahnspotterEU ปีที่แล้ว +4

You mean long-distance sleeper, right? Because Amtrak doesn't have long-distance HSR.
The European sleeper network is also constantly growing thanks largely to the efforts by the Austrian railways ÖBB and their NightJet offering.

“Dark nothingness of the Scottish Countryside…”
Sorta like Dunsmuir southbound on the Coast Starlight in 2021. Woke up at night - like I usually do - and was able to see the place in the lights of the station…

I've always wanted to take this train. In 2014 I was in England and Scotland and I was shocked we didn't take a train between the two, we ended up flying. Ever since then I've always wanted to take this or any other train that has a England-Scotland/Scotland-England route.

The infamous CAF stock (overly complicated, awful reliability, ride quality much criticised, and the similar stock with Transpennine Express is being withdrawn, in part, because cracks are beginning to develop already ... 😶)

Why can't Amtrak get something like this quality on their sleeper trains. An Amtrak version of the Caledonian sleeper Mk 5 coach would look like this the doors you enter need retractable steps like the Nightjet remember the US low platforms are 8 in above the rail 21 cm but in the Northeast it will be retracted to use high-level platforms one of the coaches need a wheelchair lift inside it due to the fact the train is set up to board West Coast low level platforms East Coast Northeast electric high-level platforms. One of them being double decker a substitute for the superliners. If the Caledonian sleeper was pulled by a Class 80-85 Roarer (🇺🇲 equivalents 11kv 16.7-60hz AC these would be the Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 EP5 New Haven RR) it needs two of them to climb WCML North and Shap basically the stretch Carstairs to Preston due to the steep gradients.
