    This was so well done. Had 2 of these rooms booked for 2019 for a Friday night to Edinburgh. On Monday wound up in the hospital. (They were great, refunded everything) Recently said to our travel companions it was off my list. Big price tag. After seeing this, its back on the list. It’s only money and you only live once. Thanks!

    I remember riding the Night Sleeper to Edinburgh back in the '90s. My friend and I had a roomette with two bunks and it was very cozy and much tinier than this room. Our buddy had a room to himself. I remember that we each got a tiny tea tray with a pot of hot tea, milk and sugar. It was wonderful. We then realized what we thought was the round trip fare was the one-way. To save money, we rode the regular second class train back to London. It was miserable. The seats were hard plastic that couldn't even recline.

    I took the sleeper to Edinburgh in Sept 2019 (Club class). They were having staffing and supply issues at the time because there was no food service in the evening and a very limited breakfast menu which you could only eat in the room. I do remember the mattress being very comfortable though. Might have to give it another try. There is also the Night Riviera sleeper train that goes from London to Cornwall if you visit the UK again. Hope you also got to explore the London Underground while you were there, so historic and iconic. Love your videos!

    If you get the chance, try Britain's "other" overnight train, which runs from London Paddington, in England, to Penzance/Pensans, in Cornwall, and is operated by Great Western Railway. Called the "Night Riviera" (or, in Cornish, "Koskador Ruvyer an Nos") this Sleeper train uses forty year-old, ex-British Rail Mark 3 carriages which have been refurbished to a very high standard. I've tried both the GWR "Night Riviera" and Caledonian Sleeper's "Lowlander" and I know which of the two I prefer!

    Love traveling along with you guys! Did someone already mention the tweed wall covering on the sleeper car and in the dining car? I believe it's made by the Scottish weavers DC Dalgliesh who make their tartans for Royalty and uses hand crafted techniques on antique looms! After watching a clip about them on a British show I was glad to see them on the train. Keep rolling!

    I must say, to me, a shoe cleaning station is such a British thing :) I hope you two make it down here to Australia and play on some of our services. The Sydney - Melbourne service should be getting new trains in the next couple of years, and of course there are the more luxury options run by Journey Beyond Rail (their most famous product is the Indian Pacific, but they offer other services as well), and I highly recommend taking the Spirit of Tasmania ferry across to Tassie.

      No, i'm afraid not. We don't actually design or build them any more. Sadly we have to import them ( mostly from Japan and Germany ) and, although we assemble some over here, it is only under licence at two plants throughout the country, Derby and Newton Aycliffe. Even then it is not to our designs. Our trains are sadly overpriced, overcrowded, often late, slow and with very poor interconnectivity between regions. You only get half-way decent services ( though still expensive and overcrowded ) if you happen to be going to or from London. If you're trying to get between any other city or region, you're stuffed.
      Additionally, we are painfully slow and incompetent at reopening closed lines from the Beeching Axe which would otherwise improve transport infrastructure in certain areas. I don't know what nationality you are, but please drop any rose tinted glasses view of our trains and railways. We have a lot to learn from others, and i'm speaking as a true Britt.

    I think this presentation is so very sweet and lovely and skilfully covered the reality. I was amused that it took over an hour to reach Watford junction on the first stage of the journey, it actually takes 15 minutes. From then on this video can't be believed. Having travelled this so called state of the art train it is actually star of the *art. Double births have much less space and comfort than the 60-year-old former births. Ladders up to top births are hard and unpleasant. Double bed births should be single. I have never known the showers to work after travelling on this service four times. Breakfast at the end of the service is extremely spasmodic and frequently never. I so want the service to work but it is fighting against bad design and unsupportive staff. Not to be recommended yet!

    Thought I'd comment having just used the sleeper both ways to go to Edinburgh for the 1st time. There are a few pros but mainly cons. Personally I didnt sleep a wink in either direction. Not sure how much is the location of the cabin in the car or the fact it may take a different route depending on engineering works. Certainly on the way to Edinburgh my cabin was over the wheels and a lot of the track seemed like it wasnt the main line. It was like having someone constantly smacking my bunk with a sledge hammer! The sleeper does NOT have the suspension you might think it should! The return trip was smoother and faster so assume we were on the mainline most of the time. Even so I still couldnt sleep. However it is more restful than sitting in a chair, I'll give them that. It also ran on time unlike a friend who flew and had his flight cancelled. It actually got into Euston an hour early on my return. The other problem is if you are staying in a hotel generally arriving early morning you have little hope of getting a room and after no sleep all night thats not good. Its more expensive than flying but a lot less stressful, no queuing, security checks etc. Given the choice again of flying / sleeper / daytime train, I'd probably just get a normal daytime train.

    I think that train (maybe the Edinburgh part) goes onto Inverness in northern Scotland. I would take a sleeper to that destination but for Glasgow or Edinburgh I would opt for the day train. I think it only takes 4 1/2 hours or so and the scenery is great.

      There are two sleeper services, that depart from Euston Station.
      The Lowland Sleeper goes to Edinburgh and Glasgow - the train splits at Carstairs.
      The Highland Sleeper goes to Aberdeen, Inverness, and Fort William - the train splits (into three sections) at Edinburgh.

      The service to Fort William, is the most scenic.
      You're quite right about the Lowland service being a little too short in duration. I've taken the sleeper, from Edinburgh to London, a few times, and being dumped out of the train at 7am on a chilly morning, isn't much fun.

  • @squalli1297
    @squalli1297 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Wow!! Amtrak can take a few pointers here. Too bad it's suffering financially. Amtrak eliminated personal care packages. Now all sleeper car passengers see are bottles of water. Your Caledonian Sleeper room provided a comfy overnight journey but you couldn't see much. The windows are small, but since there's darkness out, I suppose it's enough. There didn't appear to be anywhere to sit other than the bed in your room & it doesn't fold into a seat, so the layout suggests that you are ready to "retire" upon entering the room. $500.00 is a great price for a bedroom compared to Amtrak's Deluxe Bedrooms which can easily be double the fare for 2.

    • @jenskat1
      @jenskat1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From what I see, the problem with Amtrak is lack of government support compared with what you see in other countries. The UK's trains are suffering, in general, for similar reasons but much of Europe has subsidies on a scale like what the US give the airlines and airports. No wonder Amtrak is hurting. I'm glad the UK is keeping certain trains like the Caledonian Sleeper up to standard.

    • @GroundedLifeTravel
      @GroundedLifeTravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, the big difference is that this trip was much shorter, so when we wanted to sit we did so in the club car. You are correct, not sitting around in the room much. We were off the train 9 hours after we got on I think.

    I've been considering taking the sleeper to Fort William and your review of the train and the experience was very informative and enjoyable, thank you.
    One little quirk amused me. You seemed to be pronouncing Glasgow as Glaz Gow, with an ow sound at the end. Scots don't pronounce it that way and the English pronounced it with go at the end, effectively ignoring the w. I know, the idiosyncrasies of the language. Of course all languages seem to have them (when would anyone unfamiliar pronounce Arkansas as 'ar can saw'?)
    Thank you for your video, very enjoyable.

    Factoid you may have missed: Half the train was going to Edinburgh and was decoupled from the Glasgow half as you slept.

      @@GroundedLifeTravel - The longest platforms at London's Euston Station will only accept sixteen carriages, so the Lowlander Sleeper splits into two, eight-coach portions at Carstairs Junction, high up on the bleak, windswept Southern Uplands of Scotland, with the rear section being hauled from there to Edinburgh in the opposite direction of travel! They used to say that heavy shunting at Carstairs Junction, when a Scottish driver took over the train, acted as a wake-up call for the English passengers, giving them time to wash and dress before they reached their destination.

    Question about this room and about the train...Does this train only start in London, or can you take the same train from southern England to Scotland. Does it go straight to Glasgow or does it make stops? Wondering because on my bucket list is traveling back to UK, but visiting many more places than I have been to in previous visits. I would love to travel south of London, and then from there to Scotland. I have a good friend in Ayrshire, which is south of Glasgow, so would loike to stop there, but could always travel to Glasgow and continue to the Highlands, then stop in Ayrshire on the way back. Now, about the room. I love it, I think I could live in that room, on that train. LOL. wondering if the bedrooms are always beds, or do they fold up into a sitting room? I so love your videos. They are so informative and you both have great speaking voices and wonderful editing.

      They do serve intermediate stations but not many. Specifically the Glasgow Lowlander stops at: London Euston, Watford Junction, Carlisle, Carstairs & Glasgow. The highlander doesn't serve Watford, Carlisle or Carstairs but does stop at Crewe and Preston as well as stopping at loads of places in the Highland and a few in suburbs or Glasgow/Edinburgh.
      Maybe if you're friends where prepared to give you a lift Carstairs might be closer then Glasgow depending exactly where they live? But it means getting up early/going to bed late. Honestly I'd probably go for London to Glasgow then the local train to Ayr.
      And no the beds don't fold up in any way. If you want a seat you need to head to the lounge carrige.

    Hello I enjoyed watching your videos, thank you for sharing. I wanted to ask if you can have 4 people in that double bed? We are thinking of trying that sleeper train this year with our 2 kids. Do you think they allow you to have 1 booking with 4 person? Also what activities did you do in Scotland? Tia

    I needed to know why don’t dig a tunnel and do an extension for the main line Train so that they can extend the unused abandoned underground stations.
    Why couldn’t they use the part D78 Stock train doors on the sides and also restructure the front face of the A60 and A62 stock and that includes the class 313, class 314 and class 315 remix and make them all together and also redesign them an overhead line and also make them into Five cars per units and also having three Disabled Toilets on those Five cars per units A60 and A62 stock trains and also convert the A60 and A62 stock trains into a Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Engines and also put the Loud 7-Speed Voith Gearboxes even Loud 8-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Gearboxes in the A60 and A62 stock, class 313, class 314, and class 315 and also modernise the A60 and A62 stock and make it into an 11 car per unit so it could have fewer doors, more tables, computers and mobile phone chargers.
    A Stock Trains and also having 8 Disabled Toilets on those A stock trains. why couldn’t we refurbish and modernise the waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel and make it bigger and extend it to the bank station, making it into a Triple-Track Railway Line so those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden to convert the waterloo and city line Triple-Track Train tunnel into a High-Speed train?
    The Third Euro tunnel Triple-Track Train line to make it 11 times better for passengers so they could go from A to B. then put the modernised 11 car per unit A Stock and put them on a bigger modernised waterloo and city line Triple-Track train tunnel so it could go to bank station to those 4 European countries such as Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden. The modernised refurbished 11 cars per unit A stock could be a High Speed The Third Triple-Track Euro Tunnel Train So it is promising and 37 times a lot more possible to do this kind of project that is OK for London Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden.
    oh by the way, could they also tunnel the Triple-Track Railway Line so it will stop from Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex so that the Passengers will go to Germany, Italy, Poland and Sweden and also extend the Triple-Track Railway Line from Bank to Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Essex Stations so that more people from there could go to Germany, Italy, Poland And Sweden Easily.
    Why couldn't they extend the Piccadilly line and also build brand-new underground train stations so it could go even further right up to Clapton, Wood Street and also make another brand new tunnel train stations in Chingford could they extend the DLR?
    All of the classes 150, 155, 154, 117, 114, 105, and 106, will be replaced by all of the Scania N112, Volvo TD102KF, Volvo B10M, Gardner 6LXB, Gardner 6LXC and Gardner 8LXB Diesel Five carriages three disabled toilets are air conditioning trains including Highams Park for extended roots which is the Piccadilly line and the DLR trains.
    Could you also convert all of the 1973 stock trains into an air-conditioned maximum speed 78 km/hours (48 MPH) re-refurbished and make it into a 8 cars per unit if that will be alright, and also extend all of the Piccadilly train stations to create more space for all of the extended 8 car per unit 1973 stock air condition trains and can you also build another Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive Companies and they can order Every 17 Octagon and Hexagon shape LNER diagram unique small no.13 and unique minor no.11 Boilers from those Countries such as Greece, Italy, Poland, and Sweden, can they make Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive speeds by up to 117MPH so you can try and test it on the Original Mainline so it will be much more safer for the Passengers to enjoy the 117MPH speed Limit only for HS2 and Channel Tunnel mainline services, if they needed 16 Carriages Per units can they use those class 55’s, class 44’s, class 40’s and class 43HST Diesel Locomotive’s right at the Back of those 18 Carriages Per Units so they can take over at the Back to let those Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s have a rest for those interesting Journeys Please!!, oh can you make all of those Coal Boxes’s 16 Tonnes for all of the 117MPH Mayflower and Tornado Steam Locomotive’s so the Companies will Understand us PASSENGER’S!! so please make sure that the Builders can do as they are Told!! And please do something about these very important Professional ideas Please Prime Minister of England, the Prime Minister of Sweden, the Prime Minister of Germany, the Prime Minister of Italy, the Prime Minister of Poland and that Includes the Mayor of London.
