Thanks for these videos! If the genre we like has lots of characters and intersecting story lines that makes one big story line (Bullet Train, Crash, Game of Thrones, etc), how do you stay focused on the “key story points” while also noting how the individual stories craft the main story?
Is it better to start with simpler plots and build up to that?

Ensemble stories can be complex and take a lot of prep work. Ultimately, an ensemble is brought together by one common thing they want. The easiest way to make it as neat as possible is by outlining each individual storyline to the 3-act structure beats/key points so they are consistent journeys. Then you can weave them together and find ways to let them cross paths to help or harm each other from getting to their common goal.
If you’re beginning your writing journey, learn to balance two stories first. The traditional A story (main plot) and a B story (shorter side character’s story or a romantic story occurring with the plot) to start! Then, when you’re confident you have that down you can add more characters.

But surely you should watch it as the audience, if you are writing a story, that is who you should appeal to?

There’s absolutely a time where we should watch as an audience, although I believe we’re already always watching as an audience subconsciously! 😄 Since it’s very natural for everyone to watch as an audience my goal was to learn to watch as a writer. I think studying story structure and the flow of scenes doesn’t always come natural for some writers (like it didn’t for me. 😅)
I think I would place audience appeal lower in my process because it depends on so many factors of what you’re writing genre-wise, who picks up your movie, the budget you get, and inevitably rewrites will happen to adjust for all of it too.
