    Most of these 'velomobiles' are brightly colored; therefore, if someone says they "didn't see it" they need to lose their drivers license until they can prove they can SEE.

    Great clip!
    Small matter: at 1:20 "Alleweder.. German for Everyweather" Nope, translation's fine but Alleweder is not German, it's Dutch (you can see the Flevobike txt on the Alleweder when you look closely). Think of the Dutch word "alle-man" which translates into "every-man".
    I grew up in Flevoland and rode on the very first prototype of the original Flevobike recumbent (early nineties) that I got 2nd hand from Vrielink (he taught mechanical engineering and designed the bike for his trip to school every morning). Cheers!

    I built and rode a fully enclosed convertible velomobile for $3000.00 in 2003. Added an electric hub motor in 2005: cost $300.00 and 3 years to finish. Rode it with no problems at all, but I stopped and dismantled it for many reasons stated here- continued maintenance and repair when things wear out would be very costly, a matter of safety concerned me, and in 7 years not ONE other velomobile appeared. I loved riding it; but at 66 years old now but 1 downhill accident might do me in!

    I think velomobiles would be popular if the price wasn't so high problem is its getting loads of workers to build the velomobile I for one would love to produce a fully enclosed one for $3000 but I would need a factory and quite a few investors in the UK to start off with I think the market is there is you can mass produce the vehicle and you could have several vehicles one for the purists who only want human power and one for those who want a combination of electric and human power and you could build several models from low speed to very high speed Any takers?

      This is actually a great question. When people buy a bicycle they have a quite specific picture in mind. While there are tons of improvements in the patent database very few of them make it to the mass market. The thereby relatively standardized market greatly helps the economy of scale. ("Ordinary" designs can be produced in really large quantity) So the market that remains is people willing to pay a lot. The revolution wont happen until someone mass produces them which seems to require the technical challenges to be further fleshed out.

    the orca is the best here. the milan looks like a sub, the quattrovelo has too many wheels to be legal at least in the US, & the rest look like coffins on wheels. how about some practical velos? for example, the pebl from better.bike or the elf from organic transit. they're both over $6000 but at least otherwise they're more practical than any of these, & better looking. the iris etrike is another example. it's around $3000.

    • @rossbrumby1957
      @rossbrumby1957 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Orca looks very good because accessibility but is by far heaviest. The WAW has a removable front and rear to make servicing by far easiest. Alleweders are heavy and look a bit too steampunk to take seriously. Rotovelo 2 is out now with full suspension and I'd go carbon at under au$ 11,000 for a 20kg velo.

  • @alexanderkasady6839

    NEAT! Ideal for cold, wet climes. It could REALLY be fun if equipped with a small 2-stroke powerplant, as used in motorized bikes. Or an electric motor, but the battery would be heavy and expensive. Yeah... I'd take the gas-powered version- I could buy fuel anywhere, allowing unlimited travel distance. Then we could organize gas-powered velo bike races! Yeah! That's be a kick!

    • @scottwa
      @scottwa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The Quest and several others are really fast due to the aerodynamics. A fit rider can average over 30mph for long distances. A 53 year old gentleman from Austria holds the 24 hour record of 757.5 miles and an AVERAGE speed of 31.56mph. In a Milan, which is a stock velomobile. Get in shape and have unlimited travel distance. I watch some of these old guys that ride 2-5 hours to get to a race.

      @wotsthisay 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      why would you

    • @rossbrumby1957
      @rossbrumby1957 ปีที่แล้ว

      Electric setups aren't as heavy as you might think, but are much smoother and quieter than a petrol motor. Also, why use a noisy, smoky, short life 2 stroke when there's plenty of small 4 strokes- you could use the motor from an old 300 watt Honda generator set, I have 3 I got free from the scrapyard and though they don't produce power they run very quietly.

    • @MrWombatty
      @MrWombatty 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm sure there are, but here in Australian cities there's some real antagonism towards cyclists from many drivers , some of whom will even drive as close as they can to harass riders (sadly, often with fatal results)!
      Maybe because it's because they hate being left way behind in heavy traffic?

    • @alexanderkasady6839
      @alexanderkasady6839 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but there are plenty of lightly-travelled side streets and country lanes. The world's already a dangerous place for bicyclists, so maintaining your situational awareness shouldn't be a problem.

    • @scottwa
      @scottwa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sure you own one. If it is slow, then you need to get in shape. If it is 3x the road width of a bike then you've attached wings to it. Most of them are a bit wider than your shoulders, so I don't know where you came up with that. None of them are even 2x the road width of a bike unless you want to discuss the DuoQuest which seats 2 people side by side... or 3 people with one in the rear.

    Paul Elkins has a pedal car based on early velomobiles frame , one could even use fiberglass and make a enclosed vehicle for a lot less then these velomobiles. and have multiple speeds , be lightweight . and actually look more like a car , or anyone could have a rhodes pedal car etc. and make a body for it . or the vierbike pedal car , thats cheaper then the rhodes pedal car .

    • @scottwa
      @scottwa 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Paul's creations are great, I'm working on building something based on a Mochet myself. It won't be as fast, but I'm after cargo capacity and a 2 seater like the one he built for Burning Man. Rhodes cars suck though, horrible steering geometry, brakes and they weigh a ton even as a stripped down single seater.

    Al - oooooo - min - eeeee - um? In any case, why would I spend all that money for a pedal car when I could buy a decent used real car for the same cash outlay? Jeez, if I want exercise, I have a pedal bike that cost about $350 with a lightweight al - oooooo - min - eeeee - um frame and 21 speeds, perfect for the super steep hills around here. The velomobile seems to be an ultra expensive toy for people who have no clue or don't care that you can buy BOTH a good used car AND a good bicycle for about the same money. Like $2000 shoes or gold faucets, just another toy for the uber rich. Oh, you've made the grade ...... good for you .... but the rest of us have to watch how we spend our money.

      Shows you've not ventured into super steep hills on your poverty model (21speed) bike. On a recumbent trike or velo you can stop to rest and take off again on a 20% grade without falling over. Go faster downhill and generally ride all day without a sore ass, neck or wrists. At 35 i rode a mtb 160km in under 8 hrs, at 55 i can do it easier on a recumbent trike, faster. No fairings. theyre better and worth the money. People spend 50k on harleys they ride once a month if you wanna talk about wasted money- i ride my greenspeed magnum every day weather permitting and at au$5500 it saves me so much fuel each week I'd otherwise be feeding into a 6 cylinder falcon ute.

    I drive a Nissan leaf, I like the idea of a velomobile but they seem so dangerous, being so low to the ground and less visible next to another vehicle at junctions in traffic etc. I would not consider putting myself in the way of such harm. They have no crash protection at all and you are much more unable to be thrown clear of a crash like a push bike, you are locked there waiting to be crushed.

      On the other hand, a diamond-frame bike is far less visible on the road than a velomobile is. In case of a crash, you won't end up flying over the bike, like you do with a regular bike, which means you won't break your neck as easily when hitting the ground. Finally, the velomobile has a shield that absorbs energy.

      And a leaf is low and vulnerable compared to a patrol.

    Most of them are ugly! To much aerodynamique and less design. All of them are to low and dangerous between cars and vans. And no one Talks about the view the driver has. So i think the future is : Schaeffler bio Hybrid or the podbike Perhaps a mix of them.

      To ride one, the view in it is very good! And with 2 mirrors I can also see behind me. It is better than in a car, not big metal beams blocking the view (beam linking roof and car body I mean)

      There have been velos hit by cars doing 75mph+ (side swiped on a road in Texas) and the velo driver was injured but not killed. They offer a high amount of protection. There have been Alleweders T-boned by cars and the drives only had bruises and/or a sprained ankle.

      @Romain Condat - I have a recumbent Quad with a 16" seating position, which is higher them most velomobiles, their visibility is poor with a very low sight line. There is no contesting that complaint for most veloes. The exception would be something like the ELF, PEBL, Podbike, Sinclar Iris or Virtue Pedalist.
      Of course there are those who flatly deny that the ELF, PEBL, PodBike and Pedalist are even Velomobiles.

      I won't disagree with your opinion. It's yours, and politely stated. Thanks. I am also very interested where all this will go and how it will ultimately coalesce. It all reminds me of the early days of the automobile - a myriad of designs, shapes, and even poweplants (gasoline, diesel, steam, electric.)
