Yes, this is what the Okinawans would originally wear to practice before the advent of the karate gi. Sensei always jokes when people at tournaments require "traditional karate gi" to be worn. So Sensei always threatens to wear the above, the "original karate gi"
I am not Jundokan, but I have to say that as a Goju-Ryu student, I don't agree that you are "less powerful" as a result of being fluid. The fluidity speaks to "Muchimi" and very fine control. IF you also practice explosive tech. and "hondai" waza, you should be fine. Ask Sensei about Muchimi and Ti-Ji-Kun. Belive me Your system lacks NO power.
I like that he's wearing the truly old fashioned Gi's. Karate was created before the belt system of the Tang Dynasty influenced Japan was applied to it. If you went back in time to when Karate was created in Okinawa, there would be no talk of black belts and other such bullcrap, it was just all about what you could do.
When I first watched this video I wondered what was going on with Sensei Chinen's kata but then I noticed the comments below about this being a mirror version of the form. Train both sides equally!
@Bigvader Training continue, should u! (Yoda) Yes, there is an Okinawan saying "Ichariba Chode" which means, Once we meet we are brothers/ sisters forever!
It is with great sadness that I must convey to you that Chinen Teruo Sensei passed away earlier today from complications of diabetes and kidney failure. JP
This fella obviously has no training in our kata. The rising and falling (bobbing as he so called it) is essential to the training: sinking, rooting, posting, etc. To stay level would remove all of these vital elements...
You must utilize your legs and body motion to add to the power of the technique. Obviously you have not trained w/ Chinen Sensei! If so, you would know how that you are watching w/ an untrained eye!
Cant thank you enough for posting this ! And Chinen Sensei for the dedication he has put into Goju !
Just read an article on Master Teruo Chinen. The world has lost one of the best masters and a true gentleman.
sensei tony christian has learnt from both higaonna and chinen sensei, truly amazing sensei.

Yes, he then asked me if I noticed anything different as I was peering through the lens! 8-)

Tell him that Jim from New England sends his best wishes!
He did the same to James Rousseau and Morio Higaonna!

@Bigvader You should come over from the dark side. The force of Goju is pulling you!! ;-)
im a student of a student of sensei chinens and we have always done the kata very fluidly but less less powerfully for it.

You are obviously used to the straighter, more linear Japanese version which is not considered proper by the Okinawans
