- A quick video of why you shouldn't use old clay that's been allowed to dry out to throw pots.
As you'll see the clay wasn't wedged or kneeded well as it had been lying around for a while and become hard in some places and softer in others.
This results in you not being able to pull the walls of the pot up evenly or collar in evenly as the clay will just tend to go all over the place.
So my top tip is never use old clay that's been hanging around and allowed to dry,always use freshly kneeded,wedged or pugged clay and keep covered with polythene.

Hi from Japan. Excellent skills. However, "old clay" is not really the problem. As you intimated at the end, it's important to wedge your clay properly, and then "spiral wedge" it. Also, old clay is actually superior in structure, since it's been left to age longer and bacteria has had a chance to break it down. I know other potters here who are happy to let their clays age for 10 years or so. Again, proper wedging is the key. Thank you!

I know that you weren't very impressed with the clay in this video because it presented challenges, but I have to tell you that in my experience as a teacher, it's important to show the imperfect process, as well as the perfect. It shows your students how mistakes can happen to anyone, how to deal with them as they happen, and how to prevent them in the future. As always, it's a beautiful thing to watch your hands craft the clay. :)

Thanks for your inspiring educational tutorials. My problems: I have tubs of old clay from five years ago. I wedged but I am collapsing my cylinders due the lack of strength in my hands to open the clay with ease. My hands are very small unusually small. I had to interrupt my progress with pottery for five years. I have a whisper wheel and an easy kiln. I wonder if you have any pointers on old clay for an old broad LOL I am energetic and use my whole body to center. Wow its not easy to get back into it again and I have older. I am succeeding with newer clay. I was thinking I could do slab work with old clay what do you think! I have another problem too but let us settle for this one first. Old clay. Lumpy and a bit gritty it is low fire. Thank you. I watched and continue to watch every one of your tutorials.

Couldn't agree more, sometimes you have to show people how to make the best of a bad throwing day or clay with an inconsistent texture/ moisture level.

Is the board that the clay goes on rough like sandpaper, or is it sort of smooth?

They are like little metal plates with powered coated tops to support the designs, and make them easier to cut off.
The batt has to be super smooth as your hands run along them constantly. Having a batt makes removing your pot much easier!

If you slowly pull your hands off the clay after centering it would help so much with the wabble.. It pains me to see you have off centered clay. But hey, your the master
Sometimes when I watch people throw I just want to fix everything and just shove my hands through the screen, but for the most part your fairly talented, I understand that your a bit more industrialized.
+nick pastore what is the difference since hes more industrialized? I know nothing about pottery except when Id invade my friends classes in high school.
You tend to drop the whole "attention to detail" thing, but its a personal preference

Like.. some people use smoothing stones to get the edges really neat and well done. you can still see some swirls of finger pulling in the shape... but it doesn't look too bad.
