Bruce Smith is the greatest DE who ever played the game because he was able to be so dominant at both stopping the run and rushing the passer in a 3-4 scheme...which is EXTREMELY difficult for a DE to do. Basically all of the best DE in NFL history played in the 4-3 defense other than Bruce Smith...Gino Marchetti, Deacon Jones, Andy Robustelli, Doug Atkins, Willie Davis, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, Richard Dent, Dan Hampton, Reggie White, Howie Long...and the list goes on. The fact that Bruce Smith accomplished everything he did while playing in a 3-4 defense his whole career in Buffalo makes it that much more impressive and is the reason I think he is the greatest DE who ever played in the NFL...even better than Deacon Jones or Reggie White

His pass rush and run stopping in 3-4 scheme were impossible to achieve, but he did it. He gave his team 4 consecutive afc championships! Only LT is better, Bruce falls second on the top 10 defenders of all time, respectively only to Lawrence The Best Player of All Time Taylor
He killed my Colts year after year. He destroyed our Pro Bowl LT Chris Hinton. The late 80's/early 90's Buffalo defense was tough. A ton of respect for those Bills teams. On a side note, has anyone taken more sacks then Ken O'Brien? My Lord.
Agreed, only thing bad about his game. Hated those celebrations. But dude was an integral part of the Buffalo D in the 90's. Wade Phillips had that entire unit clicking. I got to watch him play when he was at VT: he never lost that burst around end his entire career, lowering that shoulder and almost flat to the ground while accelerating to the QB. Was nuts seeing a player that big move that fast. Surprised there were no Redskins sacks on here, especially his last sack. But it was an incredible compilation.

LT was good but Bruce was a better defender...he did it at a higher level and for longer... call me when LT gets 200 sacks playing DE in a 3-4 defense
