Someone mentioned that they like Carrie's version better because Kelly "lacks emotion". I like Carrie's version but Kelly resonates emotion throughout this entire song. Her interpretation of the song is BRILLIANT!!!!
To me Kelly's has more emotion she builds up sings very vulnerable building up whereas carrie belts and does not portray the sense of vulnerability that kelly did. I like both versions but I gravitate more towards Kelly's cover.

But in 2017, she changed recording companies from RCA to Atlantic Records. She is no longer obligated to RCA. When she won American Idol, she was legally obligated to have that recording company when she signed papers. After 15 years she was no longer obligated, and Kelly switched to Atlantic Records. Carrie does emote to a certain extent but I think there's a disconnect because she doesn't write her own music and temporary home and those type of songs of course they make you cry but she didn't write it and it's the lyrics getting you not the singer. Kelly emotes from her soul into yours you cannot listen to her song and not feel it. Also Kelly has a stronger voice, better control , and a bigger range. I think Kelly like she usually does outdid the original

I think Kelly had more emotion, and conveyed more "pain" in her voice, through her use of dynamics. Carrie's is louder and more bombastic, which is cool too, but I actually prefer Kelly's interpretation. She showcased more dimensions of her voice; Chest, head voice, mixed, and at different volume levels. Not to take anything away from Carrie of course, because she is indeed a vocal powerhouse.
