The entire album that this comes from (Forever Young) is a synth pop masterpiece. I was so happy to hear Alphaville songs played regularly on the radio while I spent a month in Greece.
Yes it was a good debut.I would personally rate it 7,5+ out of 10.Apart from the singles it had some album gems (Victory of love/Summer in Berlin/Fallen Angel).I was also on holidays in North Greece that summer and this was played everywhere.
"'Big In Japan' tells about a couple of lovers trying to get off Heroin. They both imagine how great it would be to love without the drug: no steal, no clients, no ice age in the pupil, real emotions, true worlds. Till nowadays Berlin station Zoo is an important meeting place for junkies. That's why this place became a venue of the song." I have to admit, I never understood the meaning of this song before watching a documentary of the story of Alphaville where they told about it. To me, this is just a very beautiful song and I just love listening to it.
Nice reaction as always!!! You did Forever Young, Sounds like a Melody, A Victory of Love and now Big in Japan all from Alphaville album Forever Young. Of course all album is legendary but the is one more hit on this album. It is last song The Jet Set .
That was an instantly catchy tune and super radio friendly it kinda blew our mind back then.Must have been in early spring 1984 that i had bought the 7 inch single. That summer i was on holidays in North Greece.I remember this was played and echoed everywhere you could dance and walk.B side was another great track that failed to make the album.Song was 'Seeds".An adventurous tune.
One of the pinnacles of 80’s pop synth, this version is quite a bit slower than most other releases. 12” extended is amazing. One of my favourite synth songs
This song is sooo atmospheric! I heard it as a child thanks to my father - he loved the music of the 80s. I find the clip exciting: it contains a lot of stereotypical shots associated with Japan, but they create some kind of special vibe. I highly recommend you listen to "Big in Japan" from 2022. The Alphaville still exists, but only the main vocalist remains from it, and therefore it is fantastic to hear one of his first hits in modern processing. Plus, the singer still has a great voice!❤
To check out the synthesizers of the 80s even more, I recommend listening to the songs Fancy "Bolero (Hold Me In Your Arms Again" 1985 and Fancy "Lady Of Ice" 1986
my favorite Wham song. The lyrics are some of the most brutally direct of any song I've ever heard. But his delivery doesn't come across as vengeful, just an honest expression of a guy who's had enough. ❤
AMAZING SONG, and that intro is legendary, up there with Bee Gees You Win Again. (to understand the meaning of the BIJ u have to listen carefully and read the back story to it) One of my Faves and Forever Young also by Alphaville.
Context: at that time the economic power of Japan had been seen as a threat to the Western world (a bit like China today) so there had been some songs and movies handling this. Personally I have heard the song too often in radio to be able to value it. But that other big hit by Alphaville: "Forever Young" is an eternal masterpiece worth of being heard again and again. Emotionally it's for me in the same league as Queen's "Who wants to live Forever"!
I wanna ask John Carpenter's " The End". One of the coolest 80's dance/electro sound. It's actually a bit scary. Even Fancy " Bolero" is great. Greetings from Belgium.
I wouldn't call this "Another hit", but more "THE Alphaville hit song" :)... It's the biggest hit and their breakthrough. As already said Dieter Meier of YELLO did the video and here is another trivia: SANDRA made (after she left ARABESQUE but before her breakthrough with MARIA MAGDALENA and all her other hits with Michaal Cretu) a German translated cover version called "Japan ist weit", which literally means "Japan is far away".
Great memories from when I was 7 years old when I was in 2Nd Grade at primary school. 😊🥰😍🤩☺ I remember this song and also the CLIP which I think was broadcast here in France at the time and on Canal+ during the TOP 50 ranking because there were no music channels yet. He must certainly have appeared on the Antenne 2 show (which became France 2 the following decade) in the Platine 45 show hosted by JACKY which sometimes exclusively showed certain videos of international artists as "new releases". Today this title is still broadcast on the radio on RFM or Nostalgie for example and for the CLIP only on RFM TV or MELODY TV because very few other channels play it like W9 for example in their HIT GOLD or M6 MUSIC in "BACK TO THE 80'S" on the night from Sunday to Monday, I rarely saw it!
Cultural appropriation is amazing even if it was bad it's not becoming of an American man to comment on what Japanese people like or dislike, that's for them to decide. Besides you don't get the point "Big in Japan" refers to the woman being on Heroin and turning into a Geisha symbolises her dreaming about being free of it.
There are also tons of great remixes of this song over the years, but the Freedom mix on the Big In Japan AD 1992 re-issue is still probably the most drastically different but also the best! The music video is also a collage of their "Songlines" music video laserdisc... check it out! th-cam.com/video/7uQrfWJUnhw/w-d-xo.html
funny thing is some people already knew how to play the gay stereotype (im sorry he does look gay), but he's straight , not that it matters but most people (including me) in the early 90' thought he was gay :) music wise that "embracing swirling bass\guitar mix" a i like to describe it i heavenly :)

@Dereck Reacts . I mean this in the nicest way possible. your mic audio sounds really bad. hard to tell based on no info but your gain sounds very high.. its always best to do filters in a specific order also your highs are too much making you sound like a broadcaster from a long time ago. mids and lows sound okay though. If you would like i can help you with it for free and i would love to do so. I enjoy helping people as it makes me happy lol.... let me know if your interested or you have subsequently fixed it after the time of recording this video. god bless.

Oui il a gardé son timbre de voix

I don't think many people these days know how big of a song this was. The Album is absolutely incredible as well. "Forever Young"
Forever young by Alphaville, another great song.
The two big hits
My favorite song from this band is " Sounds like a Melody" but I like this one too. the 8o's is the synth's era.
I remember dancing to this for what seemed like hours.

This was big...also here in Italy. Another their great high rated song is Forever Young.
Yes! "question of time" dépêche mode

I am actively pursuing this recommendation
@@СветланаПотапова-ш3у I have asked him do those songs for years!
And Chinese Eyes
Fancy: Slice me nice too!
I love this song and Alphaville. Overlooked in the US but as a 70s-80s chick I love them.
Everything she want's Wham is another 80's jam worth to listen.❤🎶

Greetings from Belgium.
I was digging this in ‘84. It doesn’t sound like it is 40 years old. So futuristic!
The live version from the 1980s is more haunting with some haunting tunes in background.
my favourite group
A classic number 1 all over Europe. A bit outdated with the YAMAHA DX7 sounds but a 80 's must have ❤
J'adore le groupe et tellement de souvenirs avec cette chanson
Another blast from the past! Loved this.
Video was directed by Dieter Meier of Yello.
Another legend.
Best video i ever see
Such a beautiful new wave pop classic , Sandra also covers this masterpiece in German and is super rare for collectors on vinyl .
Great song!!!

Another hit from this band...please react to " I die for you today"
Temasoooooo
❤❤❤
Sure. As European, you are usually big in Japan. As a black dude even more so... 🤷♂😄
Listen to one night in Bangkok it’s from musical chess

There’s no such thing as cultural appropriation.
Hey you should listen to Dance With Me from the same band
yes plz!It has a kinda adventurous instrumentation.
Yupp!
Agree. Was just about to mention the same song
Banger
Music from Germany!

Please react to Eve leve toi - Julie Pietri french there's something that reminds me of Alphaville ah no you already did it!
yes, already done 3 years ago.
great voice
Hi, could you please react to the French band Téléphone singing "Hygiaphone"or "New-York avec toi" and many others. Thank you.
Yes ❤❤ more songs of Téléphone, they are so great ❣️
this version is a little too slow, song is faster
The song is running too slow..... his voice sounds very "stretched".
th-cam.com/video/E2HeDHkL9kg/w-d-xo.html
I knew this sounded off, tempo is way slower than normal.
You should listen to Sandra's version of big in japan in German called Japan ist weist
Why this version is slow? 1.25x speed for better version.
Not a classic, it's a mega classic

I don't understand the whole "culture appropriation" bit, it's clearly not negative in the music video
Another German band
I feel like the version is a bit slow. It's unpleasant to listen to
it's the version I have always heard, personally
Is the same speed and version I spun in the clubs back in the day
