    Both Cesar and Eli can hit up to B5 in falsetto. Interestingly, Cesar is a low baritone naturally, lol. How Cesar gets up there with so much clarity for a low voice, is beyond me. We all know Geoff can get up to A5, but only in short bursts; Cesar belts in the 5th octave unlike any baritone I have ever heard.

    • @huldradraco
      @huldradraco ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I don't feel low baritone is the right classification to use on Cesar. J is a low baritone. Cesar struggles a lot more in the lower baritone range and is a lot more comfortable higher up.

    • @johndeeregreen4592
      @johndeeregreen4592 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@huldradraco, his F2s in "Hoist the Colors" says he is a low baritone. Any baritone who can do an F2 without it being airy is a low baritone. In reality, I believe J.None is more of a bass-baritone. His notes down to D2 have a bit more vocal weight than a baritone, but not quite to a bass level.

      @@johndeeregreen4592 I couldn't comment on Ceasar as I haven't heard enough of him specifically to say and range can vary for so many singers. I'm a mezzo, but I can sing many alto parts and soprano parts depending on the song, so take range classifications with a pinch of salt anyway. I think it's best to go on the more comfortable parts of their range, and go from there. Just because you can hit very low or very high notes doesn't mean you always should. 😊
      If I'm correct Eli is hitting the G5 here. Yes, he may be able to go higher in falsetto, but this still sounds like a pretty solid head mix, meaning he's keeping some thickness to his vocal folds while stretching them to hit that pitch, not easy to do without going to an airier falsetto tone which is why I'm so impressed by it. It also allows him to keep that rock vibe he's got going by using his mix.
      Regardless of baritone, tenor discussion these men are all phenomenal and have worked so hard on their voices. 👏 If you have any parts you'd like me comment on further please do reply and I'll be happy to give you my take on it.

      @@vtstudio173, range classifications, though, give us a good ballpark of where the person fits in, especially live. Range in the studio and range outside it are two different things. In the studio, I am good from F#0 to C#6, but live, my tessitura is more like E1 to C5. Often times, Cesar will double Eli on the high notes. And, yes, you are correct, Eli is, somehow, still chest connected up that high, whereas, Cesar is in falsetto.

    • @vtstudio173
      @vtstudio173  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@johndeeregreen4592 I agree completely however going on that ballpark theory, I'm not sure I'd put Cesar as a low baritone. Simply baritone would suffice as his ballpark comfortable notes with clarity are more in that range wouldn't you say? He has a very impressive range none the less.

    And to continue from John, below, Layne (beatbox) can actually go higher AND lower than Geoff- but - in his words - it's not pretty. Haven't been able to figure out that extra low that happens a couple of times early in the song, but the one during Layne's violin is definitely Layne. He does a lot of "organic" sounds, and that one absolutely sounds like him. There's been discussion in the comments about it: they apparently made the decision not to have Layne beatbox while playing the violin (to double track instead) because it "didn't look good."

    03:34 I believe that was Layne, although I think there was a good deal of post production help in making it. There are some very similar sounds in their cover of The Dragonborn Comes (Skyrim) that have been attributed to Layne.
    07:28 "Who wobbed?" I believe that was Layne as well. I think it's something he does on the inhale, rather than while exhaling. There are a couple of very similar sounds he produces in their cover of Enemy feat. AleXa.
    In general, my rule with VoicePlay is, if it's a weird noise that doesn't really sound like it's being produced by a human, it's probably Layne making it!

    Geoff as the bass helps with the percussion/ beatboxing/ vocal special effects. That sound was one of Layne's crazy beatboxing special effects. Not sure if it is layered over his electronic violin or done while bowing. To the best of my knowledge the top 3 acapella groups, in no particular order, are Pentatonix, Voice Play, Home Free. Pentatonix would be the student council kids( primarily pop and rock) Home Free would be the 4H Club kids ( country) and VoicePlay are the Theatre kids ( show tunes, Disney, etc...anything flashy)

    • @vtstudio173
      @vtstudio173  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually have seen them! They are very interesting. However the croaking noise that Geoff starts with in his practicing videos and becomes a note is the fundamental pitch in his case. The depth that comes from that note and creates an even lower sound that what his vocal folds are actually doing is the undertones or subharmonics. We use our resonators in various parts of our vocal anatomy to emphasize those undertones making the lower noises louder and more noticable than the fundamental pitch.
      It's incredibly interesting and very in depth, I'm not sure I quite even understand the full extent of it because there's so much to it when we start talking about frequencies with overtones and undertones. If you have any science questions about this or other parts (obviously check out Geoffs videos) then flick a reply and I will do my best to explain or research if I don't know.

    Yes, Geoff uses subharmonics but you gotta remember that his modal range is crazy low to begin with (his chest voice can slide down to E1 and sustain an F#1 ). The A1s (and the G1) you heard in this particular cover were all sung with his chest voice while the E1s were subharmonics (cue: the breathiness can help you tell right away that it's not subs, though the reverse implication is of course, not true).
    If you wanna get a better idea of how his extended low registers compare to his full voice, I recommend watching his "how to sing really low" video and the follow up QnA videos where he demonstrates tons of subharmonics (F1, D2, E1,...), growling and, of course, his low chest range down to G#1.
    To get even better at distinguishing between subharmonics (subs) and chest voice, I recommend David Larson and Bass2Yang (Thou Yang)'s tutorials on the subject, where they go even more in depth on the mechanics and demonstrate the full gamut of what subs can do (they're even better than Geoff at this)

Cesar also has an airer tone than Eli, perhaps a stylistic choice to match the softer beginning and end of this song as I know Ceasar can mix from their other tracks. J.none does have an airy quality to his voice meaning his vocal folds are a little thinner.

    Great reaction, and welcome to the TH-cam reaction video club (I’m not a member, so I’m welcoming out of turn, but anyway). It’s great when people who actually understand vocal music react to groups like Voiceplay-a lot of us want to hear about technique and theory, so I’m always glad to see reactions from someone who can do that.
    Voiceplay just released another one-In My Room, ft Deejay Young. It’s a total change of pace from this but there’s lots to enjoy and talk about there, so I hope you check it out!!
    Also, if you have never heard Dimash, you really have to go there. I suggest starting with SOS, the 2017 version-it’s where he really gained international notice, and one reason it’s a great starting place is because it’s a vocal competition (China) so you won’t be hearing a lot of reverb or other stuff that filters or corrects his voice. Also, his current production company is super zealous about copyright, so starting around 2020 or 21, you might run into more hassle. Dimash has a ton of fans all over the world, so you’ll gain views and subscribers by checking out his music. And they will assure you that he’s the best singer in the world. You be the judge.

      @@ka.ze13 I'm 💯 on the same page as you. I miss the guy with the super high voice, argh I forgotten his name but I do know it. He's in can't help falling in love. His head mix is phenomenal. It does have a sharpness to it that counters the smoothness of the other singers tonality speaking, but when they all sing together and take turns the way they do it was a really nice contrast. They're all fantastic and I don't think there's a song they couldn't sing.

    Your mic seemed to give out when you tried to sing those higher pitches from the song. You might need a stronger mic soon!

    Don't know if you know this song? Jesus Christ. The fact that someone does not know such a classic is as absurd as believing in a flat earth or in the harmfulness of vaccines. You have a lot of catching up to do.
