🦇 1:05:37 Your explanation of the end when Selina comes to save Bruce can easily be chopped to the directors decision to edit the scene with heightened suspense as presented during the Alfred explosion scene. Matt has already proven that scenes rhyme within "the batman" movie... so in conclusion, it wasn't that the goon took for ever but the 'adrenaline fueled scene' 😎💉 both literally and figuratively was stretched for artistic expression. 🦇

@Smart mouth I've got confirmation from the actor. And I prefer him not to be as to make Joe a Riddler goon too, is a bit too much. Leaving it as that church scene makes the theory in its entirety more enticing to me.

Personally I find the lack of a proper Bruce Wayne persona to be really refreshing. It sets the stage for him to step into a more traditional Bruce in the future. Similarly to how he realizes Batman can’t be a beacon of vengeance, but hope, he could realize there’s many ways to help people without the cowl. He can change the public perception of him being a spoiled rich kid sitting in his tower doing nothing to a philanthropist who, despite his family’s history, does everything he can to help the city of Gotham. Assuming we’re getting a trilogy, seeing Bruce act the same way for three films would get boring for me personally so I’m happy to see plenty of room for development.

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@jrsayles I think it's more complicated than that. I think it's more gatekeeping, trying to claim authority over the character as they know him. But of course, there's Batman from the films, Batman from the animated series and other cartoon versions, Batman from the high-profile comics like Year One, and Batman from the comics dating back eight decades. What's canon for some is only a sliver of what others know of the character.
It also has a lot to do with wanting the comfort-food of the same Batman in the same kind of Batman movie they know and love, like it's a happy meal. But the truth is, most of us don't really want that. We want new takes, new interpretations that keep up with the current world. This character has been around since '39. If he didn't evolve, he'd never have survived. He'd have been a period piece, an out-dated bit of pulp like John Carter, or Li'l Abner, or Fu Manchu. But by presenting a familiar character, filmmakers inevitably invite objection to presenting them in a new way, even though that's the only way forward.

  • @jsingletary

An analogy or plot comparison I found intriguing is when Riddler did the whole "you're not at smart as I thought you were" bit towards batman, I had the same thought about Riddler as he literally said Bruce Wayne over and over again but hadn't put together Bruce Wayne is Batman. I loved the fact that both characters literally missed a major detail because their focus was narrowed by their cause. Love that

    • @rottensquid
      @rottensquid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Right! One more way the two characters were so similar. Everyone in the film only saw things only from their own self-involved perspective. So of course these two very smart people, by refusing to step into the other's shoes, were blind to one anothers' true motivations, and deepest secrets. Riddler saw only himself in the Batman, while Batman refused to see himself in the Riddler, so they were both unable to get the whole story.

Batman was to focused on taking down riddler more then saving people. So he slacked off when they already caught riddler. Then riddler was to focused on taking down the rich that when he repeatedly yelled the name Bruce that this genius couldn't even realize how batman was reacting.

I've seen the film 3 times now. And I genuinely, wholeheartedly, am having major issues finding any critiques I have about it. Maybe it's because I had a very clear understanding of what this film was going to be as far as character archs and plot decisions. And a huge part of that is because of this channel.
For me, this is by far the most accurate, and definitive Batman movie/depiction that has even been filmed in live action. And its not even close. It was the first time I felt like I was actually watching Batman from the comics on screen. Just his presence alone is intimidating, methodical, deliberate, scary, and in control. The same can be said about Selena/Catwoman. She seriously felt like the character from the comics. Particularly from Year One. The Riddler is fucking terrifying, yet brilliant. The Penguin is absolutely fantastic! I absolutely love this iteration of the character! And this was by far the best Jim Gordon. I'm seriously STILL blown away by this film and what Matt Reeves was able to accomplish.
    Now, the third act.....
I think the third act of this film is absolutely perfect as a springboard for the character development of this Batman. We literally see his development into the more heroic side of his super human drive. The moment where he sees the wires about to fall into the water and kill a bunch of people, and he immediately acts, and puts himself in danger, is incredible. To see that, and to watch him save those people, and lead them to safety after the first 2/3s of the film, was genuinely emotional. And it was that same little boy to be the first to trust him, and take his hand. I honestly don't understand why people are having issues with the third act. I thought it was fucking brilliant.
I too, don't want to come off as a shill, but im being 100% honest when I say that I don't have almost ANY issue with ANYTHING about this film. But again, I think its because we (this community) have a deeper understanding of what the goals were in this film, and what Matt Reeves was attempting.
It's by far my favorite Batman film, and Robert Pattinson is easily my favorite Batman. This is actually my favorite comic book movie of all time. With Joker coming in right behind it.
I applaud every single member of the production team and all of the actors involved in this film. It's as close to flawless a film can be, for my particular taste and what I find interesting/appealing in movies. Absolutely incredible film!

I agree. This was a dark epic crime noir masterpiece. Batman Begins was always my favorite and while this film is still fresh in my mind, I seen it twice and liked it even more the 2nd time. That's a good point. I loved this ending because despite going the absolute distance both physically and psychologically, they protagonist doesn't quite succeed, things are arguably as bad as they have ever been and the "hero" will just have to make do with that because that's life.

Come to think of it, it’s actually kinda interesting that as much as the Riddler despised the Wayne’s because of what had happened in the past with the orphanage. And how he saw Bruce as not a proper orphan because he lived above the city with luxury instead of the squalor of an old Orphanage. And Edward constantly trying to one up and get out of the shadow of the Wayne’s He ultimately ends up still being both growing up and being imprisoned in the shadow of the Wayne family. As the orphanage he grew up in was formerly Wayne Manor, and him later being locked up in Arkham State Hospital. The latter being Martha’s maiden name and birth family. As revealed in the film’s prequel book He hated living in an orphanage that used to be the Wayne’s family home. But now he’s imprisoned in Arkham which is another location related to the Wayne’s because it has Martha’s family name. No wonder he’s obsessed with Bruce & Batman because as much as he tries he’ll never escape his shadow.

One of my biggest complaints about the film is that I desperately wanted more of that friendship, a deeper understanding of how it came about, and more focus on what it means to both of them. These days, Bruce's bond with Alfred is kind of his father surrogate, but I always loved the old Batman/Gordon bond. In the Animated series, that's the real father surrogate connection. Alfred is more of a kindly uncle. I find there's something problematic about projecting father-figure status on an employee. A parent figure needs to set limits, and Gordon should be doing that more with Batman.
But I can't think of a more brilliant casting for Gordon than Jeffery Wright. "I still don't know who you are, man." What a great characterization.

From my perspective as someone who lost parents at a young age, I related more to this Batman in a way I never have with any other. I usually liked the villains more than Batman in every Batman movie. This one was so different, and while I guess there may seem to be less duality for Bruce/Batman, I really felt his demeanor and behaviors dealing with their (his parents') death and his age was very accurate. At his age, there are so many things that your parents are supposed to be there for, and it really makes you feel withdrawn and isolated from everyone else in the world. You're looking for your identity with little to no real guidance, you're angry and melancholy. His behavior as an orphan, now in his 20s, was so much more real to me in this Batman than it has seemed to me than in the others -where he's a playboy by day and a vigilante by night.

This. The joe chill theory would be cool but I think this makes way more sense and how I interpreted the scene. Them lingering on the dude made me feel like we’d see him again. His silhouette as the camera pulled back almost matched the silhouette of Riddler gazing down on Bruce at the funeral. I think that was the connection being drawn.

Great video. My 2 cents right before I'll watch your analysis. My main critiscm of this movie (beside some cliched things like speeding up batman x Selina relationship without earning it naturally) is that they made the same mistake as Nolan with DKR. Meaning, they did the same thing with Riddler as with Bane but here they did it to the extreme. For 3/4 of the film Riddler is actually better Batman than the Batman himself? First one truly fights corrupt Gotham while the latter just beats some goons on the streets. Because his motivations are not so insane in a vacuum they had to turn his insanity level to the maximum with the last act. Where he goes full psycho, recruiting internet shooters with intentions to kill civillians and not corrupt ppl he was chasing all a long up until this point. What is more they never dig deeper into the chat that the new mayor had with Bruce at a funeral. About doing more as a billionaire-civillian. It would be nice to show that he grew to be not only the symbol of hope but also a man that is doing good to change the city, outside of his Batman work. Beside that I'm absolutely in love with this film, I finally got a 'product' I always wanted so can't really nitpick too much.

I just love this Batman take, and how it ended was a perfect way to do even more films as he finally says he needs to do more which for me will spark him to do more as Bruce himself as at the start of the film he felt like only Batman was the way to help people in Gotham. So many detailed perfections of this take of Batman, feels so grounded and human

Regarding what you mentioned about Bruce and Batman not being very different, it was key to show how broken the man is, how big the trauma is and how it really drives his whole existence (you've got to be in a really dark place to dress like a bat and go fight crime). It is due to the events of this film that he then realizes he has to change in order to succeed in saving the city, thus embracing his Wayne persona in service of his goal, so the film leaves the character in the perfect place so that we can see a fuller Wayne/Batman duality in the next movies to come. Spot on performance.

He had a waddle all the way through. That's why he has the nickname. The waddle suggests someone cut his achilles tendon, which is a horrifying thing to do. It makes you a cripple for life.
My theory about the character is that he was brutally tortured for information, and didn't give up his boss. And that's why he's so disgusted with Falcone for being a rat. Gangster code means never, ever talking to the cops, not even about your worst enemy. Falcone committed a cardinal sin doing that. He ruled the city, but he was bound by no law, not even the law of criminal honor. I suspect that will be a major theme in the Penguin TV show.

    This would furthermore echo the
"I am Vengance (Movie 1), I am the Night (movie 2), I am BATMAN (the grand finale)"

I had my reservations regarding the final act when I first watched it, thinking it'd be better if either Riddler was there, or if they removed the henchmen entirely. But there's something that happened in the film that, after thinking about it, made me realize what the movie was really going for. It was the scene where Batman was beating Riddler henchman up and removes his mask, and the henchman says "I'm Vengeance". People are trying to adopt the same mantra as Batman, using fear to bring about change but in dangerous ways. It was to show Batman how he's been going about his Gotham project all wrong, that fear is not enough to change Gotham. You need hope as well. Which led to Batman saving people from the flood and becoming a hero, a symbol of hope. I love this movie. I can't wait to watch it again.

1:02:30 As someone who carries a gun daily, Selina missing her shot wasn’t a big issue for me. She knew how to take out the mag and look to see if it had bullets, but that’s like the bare minimum of gun knowledge lol. She didn’t actually take the gun apart or anything (not that she needed to).
She’s right handed (iirc). She fired at his head and it went to the left. That’s a very common problem with handguns in the right hand; it’s from a bad grip and trigger squeeze. Mime a gun in your right hand and yank your finger back fast; you’ll notice your hand twitches left slightly. She probably did that instead of a light squeeze like you’re supposed to do.
Also, it happened right as the lights went out.
So yeah. Didn’t really bother me, but I can see it bothering people who’ve never shot a gun before lmao 🤣
Also, Falcone did confirm he killed Selina’s mom. You’re definitely right when you thought of the poetic symmetry with the clawing.

    Most excellent review!
I honestly couldn't agree with your thoughts on this film more.
I found this to be the most intelligent Batman film to date, and the most definitive Batman. The writing, direction, cinematography, score, acting, character portrayals, story arcs, etc, were all excellent. There is nothing lazy about this film. Loved the attention to detail. Adored the artsy noir factor. While it was gritty, dark and grounded, the humour was there and it retained a comic feel and stayed faithful to the canon in all the important ways.
I honestly get the impression that many who erred on the side of dissatisfaction with the film did not know they were going to see a noir detective pov driven artsy Batman film. If you knew what type of film you were going to see, I just don't understand how you would not enjoy it. It's all subjective though and we all have different tastes.
Just re a few of your nitpicks - it's much harder to be accurate with a handgun than a longarm, even at close range, unless you are practiced, and adrenaline can cause shaky hands etc. Also re the Bruce voice over comms with Selina - I thought that his accidental lapse in Batman voice mode, essentially dropping his guard a little, was a nod to the real connection he felt to her.

The interrogation scene were we assumed the Riddler knew Batmans identity was hilarious because the look in his eyes was as if to say “I gonna either have to hang up my cape and give up this vigilante role, or destroy the camera footage and somehow rip out Riddlers tongue”. But when he realised that the Riddler didn’t really know you saw the sigh of relief 😮‍💨 😅

Loved this movie and super enjoying your takes!! For the Bruce not changing into his bat voice for Selena, I took it as a combination of him being caught by surprise, in his place of comfort (bat cave), and talking to someone he wants to trust, culminating in his guard falling a bit and Actual Boy Bruce coming through.
For the Batman making a grand entrance into the garden through the ceiling, I thought when watching it that it was the riddler goon’s munitions that caused the explosion since glass showered into the crowd. One or some may have placed them without the rest knowing. But in hindsight that also makes Batman’s entrance at that exact moment totally wild. Another thought: like a burst shot gadget meant to break through windows like that? But because he’s still like becoming aware of consequences he didn’t take into consideration glass showering a crowd below. It’s all a bit of a reach, and I never even considered the moment til you brought it up, so thank you for making me think about this movie EVEN MORE.
For the comedy aspect of this movie, I loved it, I think it plays well on Bruce not being able to interact with people at all, and as Batman he’s trying to be an Adult and it’s awkward and great. #thumbdrive

Having seen it today, the more aggressive version of the music you use in the background from the film, now lives rent free in my head.
As for the film itself I really loved it, definitely up there as one of the best Batman films. I do kind of agree with those that the 3rd act does feel different and doesn't quite live up to the first 2, but still enjoyable. Pattinson might be my favourite Batman, but maybe not my favourite Bruce.
Really hoping the 2nd chapter does feature the Joker, as Barry Keoghan sounds and the glimpse of his appearance look great.

The part with him speaking like bruce to Selena I just thought was because hes just had a really emotional thing to him, and he contacted her. I felt he was reaching out for human contact with the one other person he could beside alfred. Also the batmobile revving reminded me of a dog at the end of its chain or leash trying to attack while being held back and it along with the boot sound are my favorite of the entire sound design

This the best Batman story where they explore the World's Greatest detective storyline. I enjoyed the Riddles that Nashton setup for Batman and Gordon where you had that dynamic duo aspect similar to Ellen Yin and The Batman from the " Riddled" episode as The Riddler want to test the intellect of Gothams new protector. Then with Oswald Cobblepot it was straight up Godfather with him being like Fredo Corleone who wants recognition and attention. His rise to Power starts now. One thing I found interesting was during the funeral scene for the Mayor the BTS showed Selina Kyle as the escort for Carmine Falcone but during reshoots they changed it with another actress as they wanted to make the connection of Selina being Falcones daughter like The Long Halloween.

Even with such a large cast, the amount of screen time characters do/don't get you have to get credit to the fact all of them get meaningful/important moments. They're not just shoe-horned in

Damn that’s a good way to explain the feeling of the third act. I love this movie, but I also felt like the 3rd act felt different. You explained it perfectly, the status quo changed, and we didn’t really know where it was heading. I love the execution though

I believe it to be confirmation that falcone killed selina’s mother. She talks about how her mother was strangled, and then later on they specifically say that her friend is being strangled in the recording. And it sounds like falcone is doing it himself

He says “you made me do it , just like your mother “ when he was strangling Selina with the pool stick , so yes he killed her mother

I've had the chance to watch now, so I can finally enjoy a review! So here I am, at my favourite DC news and review channel!
I did thoroughly enjoy the film! It was better than I expected it to be. I'm not overly convinced with Pattinson's Bruce or his Bat, but I'm not letting that detract anything from the quality of the actual film itself!
I forget what you said to hashtag, but #thehashtag lol
    Awesome review buddy!

Boba you think the guy at the funeral could in fact be Tomas Elliot? And maybe just by watching how Bruce reacts during the attack. Saving the kid and not flinching when the phone rings combined with what the riddler reveals he figures out Bruce is Batman and becomes hush because of the Hush money the riddler references

Something I’ve seen zero people mention is the pictures The Riddler has on the thumb drive of Colson and then the Commissioner. They’re all from the same angle and clearly taken from his apartment window which he shot Falcone from. Nobody thought from where the photos were taken? Little nitpick but I found it funny lol.

Riddler did know. Boba he said "everyone is trying to unmask you but you AND I know this is the real you." He hammered home that he knew but didn't care. He figured they were partners. Listen closely to his rant about Wayne. It was him setting up the alibi. He watched him the entire movie going in and out of Iceberg 3 times himself and once with just Selina. Bruce couldn't even look him in the eye.

I watched it with my sister and then my wife. Both of them asked why he did that (when he cut the power line). I was like uh to save all those people. He immediately after coming back from the brink looked at all these people and went to save them not telling Gordon, Selina or anybody there. That scene was powerful. One of the best of the whole movie.

When Selena missed Falcone, at that exact moment Bruce shut down the power for the entire building. So I believe, that's the reason Selena missed. Earlier Batman told Gordon, "I have to stop her." or something along those lines, and Selena missing her shot is showing how Batman was BARELY able to save Selena from crossing the line.
    Thanks for all your videos!
