    Not sure if I missed it or if it wasn’t mentioned, but did you noticed something moving around in the lens when the camera was off? That’s one of the bigger issues I’ve heard about this lens.

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Daniel. Yes, there are elements moving around in the lens when it's turned off. Most of the OIS lenses do this. I believe it is the elements that make up the image stabilization system that "float" when no power is applied to the lens, and is normal behavior. My 50-140, 70-300 are fairly loud and have noticeable movement of these elements, while the 18-135 and 16-80 are pretty quiet and mostly unnoticeable. Hope that helps!

      @@MSladekPhoto really. I didn’t know that. The only OIS lens I have is the 18-55 and never really paid much attention to it. I only got it because my 16-55 is broken and needs repair, so the 18-55 was more my backup till the other is either repaired or replaced. My next lens is the 70-300, so I’m sure I’ll notice it. Thanks for the response.

      You’re welcome! It’s a pretty common question. Enjoy the 70-300 - it’s a really fun lens.

    Hi Michael.. While shooting 1:1 macro handheld, have you tried Continuous AF to keep the focus. I think it is quite possible in theory but I've read many comments that people prefer MF over AF so they use manual focus lenses on macro shots. What do you think?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question! I really don’t like the focus by wire manual focus, so just stay away from it 95+% of the time. I do often use AF-Cfor handheld macro, and it’s helped a lot to get a sharp photo. Lots of misses, but usually one sharp one in the batch. Thanks for sharing!

      When I tried that with my X-T3, I often would have a delay between pressing the shutter and camera taking the shot. Even though I was supposed to be in focus already.
      The tracking was for me never super reliable, but then, the auto focusing at closest macro distances also was never very reliable anyway, often locking on to things too far away and ignoring my tiny subject in the foreground.
      In the end I prefer MF for macro and be in control over where the focus is, then take multiple shots. If not using a flash, you can use burst mode shooting. If shooting with flash, you'll have to pace yourself a bit.

    Hi Michael, are you using a flash/speedlight for the macro shots in your slideshow?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Byron! Nope, no flash/speedlight in any of these photos. Just good old sunshine or cloudy skies.

    Is it a good lens for product filmmaking?I want to take macro detailed shots for my product commercials is the AF fast enough or so slow since its an old lens.

      @MSladekPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! Thanks for your question. To be honest, I do not have an answer. I had the lens on loan from Fujifilm for 30 days and did not do any video testing with it. But, my guess is the autofocus should be ok if you're doing slow moves in the macro video. Sorry I can't be more help, and best wishes!

  • @TimvanderLeeuw

    I don't know why, but I felt I could never get close enough with this lens. I bought an extension ring for it and then I could get a bit closer -- but a hassle for when you then want to shoot something further away.
    I ended up getting a lens with 2x magnification and even though it's all manual, I feel much happier shooting macro with that lens in 90% of all cases!

    Hello Michael, I'm not sure if you're going to see this comment (question) because it's on an older video, you probably uploaded it before I subscribed to your channel. I have the XF60 f/2.4 with the MCEX-11 extension tube (which renders the lens useless for anything but macro) and it gives me very nice image quality. I'm interested in the 80mm macro simply because I have gas (not the kind that goes away with Tums), do you believe that the image quality will be significantly better than the 60mm, or should I save the $1,200 and wait to see what new toys Fuji comes out with in May?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Enrique! I've not tried the 60mm, so only can go on what I've read/watched and that is that the 80mm is a MUCH better lens for image quality and much more. It's on my wish list, for sure. I don't think Fuji has any macro lenses on their road map for the near future. Fujirumors just posted that they are working on a 18-120mm f/4 lens, which would be right in my happy zone. LOL. Cheers!!!

      @@MSladekPhoto This is good to know, you can actually get comments on older videos, now I can really start to bother you (haha). When I say that I'm looking forward to Fuji's new toys in May, I'm not looking for new lenses, I'm talking about cameras, something like the X100V (with a better battery), or maybe an X-Pro4.

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Enrique-the-photographer Ahhhh, good to know what you’re in the market for! I think next new camera looks like X-H2 in 26 and 40MP versions before the end of the year. I could never get into the rangefinder style cameras as I am left eye dominant, and they work best with right eye…

    • @Enrique-the-photographer
      @Enrique-the-photographer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MSladekPhoto As I previously mentioned, I'm just looking for a new toy, I'm more than happy with my X-T4 and not sure how much better the X-H2 would be, especially for my needs. It's not that I like range finder style cameras, but I like the fact that it's much easier to carry when going out to dinner (or a shopping mall) instead of the X-T4, I can put it in a small pouch and attach it to my belt (nobody ever accused me of being normal). BTW, did I mention the fact that I retired two years ago and this is a lot of fun?🤣

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Enrique-the-photographer Yep - a more pocket friendly camera would be nice! I've seen a number of TH-cam folks (especially Sean Tucker - love his stuff!) who use the Ricoh GRIII. It's almost as much as a X100V, but quite a bit smaller. Also - congrats on enjoying your retirement - that is so awesome!

    Would you recommend this lens for a food photography or is there a more suitable one?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! I think this lens should work pretty well for food photography, but since it’s a short telephoto lens, factor that in to the space you’ll need to create the compositions. It will be great for closeups and details, but less so for larger food groupings. Hope that helps!

    what aperture do you recommend for scanning 35 mm film? I thinking f5.6 or f8

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nikki! I have never done scanning of 35mm film with a camera, so I recommend searching online for an expert answer. However, my starting point would be f/8 or f/11, as for most lenses that is their sharpest and highest contrast aperture. Hope that helps!

    Does it have a metal or plastic construction?

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Josh! I was loaned this lens by Fujifilm, so I don't have it in front of me currently. If I remember correctly, it's mostly metal (especially at the body connection) with some plastic elements. I remember it feeling very well made, solid and like it would be very dependable for a long time. Hope that helps!

    You've done what 90% of people on YT do, spend an inordinate amount of time (around 2min 10secs in your case) just repeating what the title has already told us. Why ? Rest of the review is fine.

    • @MSladekPhoto
      @MSladekPhoto  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Mike! Thanks for the feedback. There’s a couple of reasons for telling what the vid will be about. First - some people will view the video via a shared link and may not have seen the title. Second - remember when we all used to go to movie theaters and by the time the fifth trailer ended we all were like, “What movie am I here to see?” And bonus reason: I include chapter markers in the video descriptions. Skip to the one after “Intro” and you can get that 2 minutes and 10 seconds of your life back. Cheers!
