She said in an interview that Kersee told her to take it out hard and see how she felt. He’s one of the all time great coaches and she’s one of the all time great athletes. I trust that they have a plan and that there is a method to their madness. It’s the first race of the season and this is the first open 400’that she’s run in years. This is far from a finished product. I’d image her race looks a lot different by year end 💁🏾‍♂️

I don't think the coach is good for either Mclaughlin or Mu. If they keep losing, both of them will change their coach very soon. On the other hand, Britton Wilson may have a good chance to win 400mF in some major events, even without a star coach.

@@trumplostlol3007 I would beg to differ. Doing this you can see where you are and adjust. Where your body breaks down and what points and adjust. Not trying your hardest leaves too much uncertainty. Track athletes train milestones. Let’s say she took this to film. Coach says hey run a 23.00 this time on your open 200 that’s what they train for. It’s a bit more complicated because you get 50-100-150 splits as well to train for that 200. But they train repetitiveness for those split times and adjust. And this is for the whole race. Knowing your body’s limit is 100% the right play. With the exception of bolt and shacari the play is always to get out fast and hold the lead. It’s always easier to maintain at the last stretch than to speed up because you’ve already exerted that much energy

What folks need to realize is that Sydney going out hard wasn't an error, but an experiment. I do remember when Bobby Kersee had Felix do the same in Rabat 2015, at which she only managed to do it in 51 secs. By later that year, she went on to claim her first WC title in a new pb of 49.26. No one saw this coming, and most had favoured Shaunae Miller to win since she was already running 49s. Y'all gotta trust the process and know that Kersee is setting her up for something major! Kudos to Paulino and Naser as well. This is going to be a herculean battle amongst those three at their peaks.

I was actually going to propose that as a likely scenario. When i ran T&F I remember coaches doing that especially with their star athletes, and especially early in the season, in order to test their make or break points. They would use that data to further develop the training and race strategy of the individual athlete.

Gabby Thomas did 22.38 that season and is 2-3 years older....but became the #3 200 runner all-time 3 years later. Syd came within 0.01 of her in 2018 but was just way too dominant at 400mH to switch.
Now, she is the undisputed GOAT at 400mH and we can see her branch out finally.
She also long jumped 18'6" at 14 and 20'6" at 17.
She can also juggle while riding a unicycle... seriously.
I hope she does some 200s too. That 60m in Boston this year showed she is a true speedster. Also got 11.07 100m with only slightly excessive wind (+2.1) at 18yo.

As I watched this race unfold and saw McLaughlin tie up at the end, I wondered what message she was sending to the other competitors. She is too disciplined a runner to make those mistakes. Of course, I could be wrong.

Going out that fast is a coaching decision. If she’s gonna break the world record she has to have those fast early splits and still finish strong, in the world record Koch ran a 22.4 for the first 200m, Syd just want a 22.6 in her first race. Syd 4 years to get this record. Her finish will come in time the same way it did it the hurdles. This girl will finally take down Marita Koch world record. I truly believe that.

I think Sydney McLaughlin has 48-mid to 48-low potential for this year. It usually takes either a lot of experience with that race (which she doesn't have), or more likely several races to find that sweet spot for pushing the pace, yet having enough left for a strong finish and ending up with your best time. Now that she has a bit of racing experience under her belt, we'll probably see her times dip precipitously as the season evolves.

@@rogerbarnett8412 If you consider that from 2018 to 2022 Sydney has made significant progress in the 400mh and she would also have progressed in the 400m. Considering that prior to this year, the last time she ran the 400m was in 2018, the most reliable record of her 400m progression from 2019 to 2022 would be her 4x400m splits.
In 2018 when her 400mH PB was 53.82 she ran a 400m PB of 50.07, in 2019 when her 400mH PB was 52.23 she split 48.70 in the 4x400m and in 2022 when her 400mH PB was 50.68 she split 47.91 in the 4x400m.
I'm not saying that her 400m PB is 47.91, what I'm saying is her 2022 4x400m split of 47.91 is a more accurate reflection of her 400m progression from 2019 to 2022.
Her Paris DL 400m PB of 49.71 is very misleading because it wasn't the results of a race where Sydney was trying to win, it was the result of a training session conducted under racing conditions at the Paris DL.

I think you’re missing something and possibly mistaken too!! What SM-L did was likely and exactly what both she and her coach wanted!! This was an assessment of her ability, to see exactly what she’s got, working with and where to focus for the future!! Technically she only has to concentrate on the last 50M, how to overcome the lactic acid barrier and maintain or possibly improve the closing/finish!! The hurdles is a a repetitious effort and event, methodical if you will!! 123 over, 123 over, that’s what she did in the flat here; steady pace(her pace) can do 300+ meters and keep her in front!! As seen only one could catch her, along with the assessment of her effort, she et al now needs to factor in others like the winner and make the adjustments accordingly!! I’m sure nobody’s gonna want to go after SM-L, which means they are gambling that she’ll tie-up, I wouldn’t take that gamble!! Consider the 400 flat on notice, this is gonna change how it’s approached going forward!! If none can stay with SM-L for the 350 mark, they would need to pace themselves exactly right because SM-L is likely to improve!! By the way…how about SM-L in a 200!?

This was no error on Sydney's part. I tried for 4 years in college at Florida State to run a sub 4-minute mile running 4:00.5 three times and 4:01.x more times than I can count because I constantly had a shitty third lap split because I was always afraid of not having enough to finish strong (or possibly afraid of hurting too much 😨) . Finally in mid season of my senior year at the Florida relays in Gainesville, Coach Long told me to just go all out on the backstretch of the third lap and finish with whatever I have left. I ran splits of 59.2, 60.1, 56.4, 61.2 to get there at 3:56.9. I was run down by two superior runners in the last 50 yards, but I had finally reached my goal and beat some guys that had beaten me for many years. Sometimes you have to experiment and be willing to fail if it doesn't work.

Sydney is capable of 47.8s this season with these revelations. And as always, excellent analysis by Total Running Production.
However, there are to inaccurate notions.
    1. Sydney "didn't" run 22.6s in 200m but first 200m of 400m. She ran on lane 4, meaning her first 200m bend is 'shorter' than that of open 200m. Many sprinters would run faster than their best over 200m when running the first 200m of 400m except when they run it on lane one or two, which have similar bend distances like the open 200m race.
    2. Sydney's open 300m estimate is underrated/underestimated! She'll definitely run better than 34.9s if she runs 300m from lane 2 or 3. But might still run a 34.9 if she ran it on lanes 6 to 8.
Open 300m race is not a standard event. 300m of a quatermile is ran from Curve to end on 100m start. Meaning the amount of bend each athlete in all the 8 or 9 lanes run are the same. Innermost lane (one) has even first and 2nd bends. Lane 2 has slightly shorter first than the 2nd,then on and on till the outermost lane with shortest first and longest 2nd bends.
If 300m is going to be a standard event, it would need a SPECIAL 300m track that is staggered just like the 200m or 400m races on standard tracks. Remember Bailey and MJ 150m race was staged on a special track with 75m bend and 75m straight.
If a 300m race is staged between the 3 leading ladies in Paris DL, on a standard track from back straight, WHOEVER runs on the innermost lane most likely would win with all things being equal.
Meanwhile, Salwa would win the 400m at Budapest WC.

I would have like to seen a comparison of her 200m and 300m splits from this race to her WR with hurdles as well as comparison of her last 100m between the two races. It is rare to see her hit the wall like that in the last 75m.

@@rogerbarnett8412 With the exception of her last WR. She went out very hard. She also looked a lot leaner at the World Championships last year than at the beginning of the season so once she tapers and peaks correctly we may see something huge from her in Budapest.

Britton Wilson is still my favorite to win USA trials. She has a grit and determination to her to finish a 400 hard as she’s shown indoors and outdoors. Both her and McLaughlin have to decide which events to focus on, as they both do 400/400H. But this year the world 4x400 record could be going down at the WC

Marita Koch's 200m split of 22.45 during her 400m 47.60 world record in 1985 is faster than Sydney Mclaughlin's 200m split you are talking about in this video.

That's what her coach told her to do.... RUN the first 300 and let's see what ya have to go home...she will get even better... its a tactic to see where you are... and it makes ppl hit the wall closer and closer to the finish line....this is amazing work

Last year, Shaunae Miller-Uibo went out in 22.70s during the 400m in the Monaco Diamond League, and that was one of the fastest 200m splits in my mind, so yeah, I doubt anyone except the WR holder (22.45) has gone out faster.

I think Sydney will break the world record this year, however Fenke Bol is right there as well, as she has shown in the indoor events. Its not only an adjustment period, but also to test out how fast of a speed she can sustain and if this could be extended. I think she is too experienced of an athlete, to not have her eye on the Worldchampionships and the Olympics, rather then an early season diamond league event. This was always a first test that would serve as a measuring stick. In that context it was correct to go all out initially and see how long that can be sustained.
