    I just finished getting a couple Dolby Vision versions of some 4K movies I already had in HDR like Top Gun, Back to the Future, Sonic etc... to see if I could tell any difference and I have to say, it's definitely negligible for me. The difference between watching the two is so small I would never be able to tell.

    Do you have a list of the MaxCLL of every 4K Blu-ray? I'd really love to see that information. The fact that the Mad Max 4K Blu-ray has some pixels that go up to nearly 10,000 nits is quite surprising to me!

    Thank you Vincent. Another great review!. If you can, please check into how well the ATV 4K handles the up conversation of non 4k HDR to 4k HDR & DolbyVision. With this test, it should cover all the bases as to just how good ATV 4K really is. As it stands now for me in my humble opinion, ATV 4K is a great deal and I’m thoroughly enjoying what I see on my LG 65” B6P. I keep it set to DV@ 24hz for all content, but would like to know through your tests if it’s doing a good job at up conversion.

    Thank for your good, very professional video, but I have a question. Considering all the actual tv panels are 8 and 10 bit, and that it is not a "real dolby vision", but only a "Dolby vision SUPPPORT", do you really think the dolby vision on the actual 4k HDR 10bit panels is so important? your professional answer would be very helpful! Thank you.

    hey, the comparison of the scene which has a guy inside the car is not using the same frame. In a different scene a slight difference in time frame would be fine, but considering the context of that specific scene, utilizing the same frame is imperative for a fair comparison. what's up with that? you didn't notice it?

    Should I use 4:2:2 chroma with Apple TV 4k. If i'm not misteken - the source material is in 4:2:0 (either from the streaming liek apple tv or bluray) and it need to be in RGB to be dispalyed on TV. The best would be 4:4:4 to be displayed RGB, but other way the source have to be upscaled. So I can upscale it in the Apple TV form 4:2:0 (source) to 4:2:2 and then in TV from 4:2:2 to RGB or I can send 4:2:0 from Apple TV (same as source) and upscale it to RGB inside TV.
    Which option is better? Is Apple TV doing good job of upscaling chroma?

    Excellent review for someone thinking about an alternative to the Roku Ultra. For now it may be useful for me to have Dolby Vision converted to HDR10 since I still own a Samsung TV with HDR10 only. Apple TV performs the conversion but Roku does not. What is your assessment of the Apple TV converted HDR10 picture quality vs just a straight 4K picture with no HDR10 conversion. Is it any better than what we get with Roku without DolbyVision?

    One more question I have: how does an HDR10 movie work out in iTunes. Do they provide the right meta data as on a disc or are these fixed values also applied to a ‘native’ HDR10 movie. There are some movies that are non Dolby Vision. What is also very strange: some movies appear in 4K first, then become a HDR10 movie and some days later are all of a sudden Dolby Vision movies? Even when there is not a Dolby Vision version on a UHD disc. Very puzzling. Do movie studios make Dolby Vision version especially for Apple or the streaming business?

    I understand the HD Fury linker 'tricks' devices into outputting to their maximum, for the displaying device to then process and produce the best possible image (in layman terms - which is the extent of my knowledge). If this is an accurate description, would it help in this scenario, as the display would not be limited by inaccurate metadata?
    I'm interested as I use the Epson TW9300w projector which doesn't support Dolby Vision, but does it's own processing/upscaling, and I want to understand how to get the maximum data delivered to it from the (soon to be delivered) ATV.
    My question also applies to the Xbox One X. Thanks.

    8:59 does not look like it is the same frame, at all, dolby vision frame seems to be some ms earlier, the head position is a little bit different, the blur in the ear is not present on the HDR10 frame and the obvious differences in the shadow detail, can't be result of the conversion, please check it out.

    • @philshoebottom
      @philshoebottom 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I didn't think it was the same frame either. With lightning strikes the light can alter dramatically from frame to frame. I think you'd have to stop them both exactly on the same frame to compare that scene

  • @joao_serra
    @joao_serra 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: One way I can think of achieving this DV->HDR10 conversion without delivering dynamic metadata to the TV Set, but at the same time maintaining a significant level of visual fidelity, is getting the min/max/avg luminance that the TV physically supports(from the TV EDID CEA-861 static metadata block) and using it for doing a tone-mapped HDR10 version of the original Dolby Vision signal constrained to the max/avg luminance values that the TV physically supports. So, the metadata you would see on the HDMI info-frames will be exact same metadata that the TV's EDID will report. Yes, you would also have a constant metadata independent of the content, but the ideia here is that tone mapped version would be specifically designed for the specific display luminance capabilities. What you think?

    You should do an updated version since the Apple TV 4K 3rd Gen upscales and does also hdr10+ as well now (except for maybe Yt or Netflix?). Especially since Samsung seems to be holding its ground on not supporting Dolby vision on any of their tvs and can be a major deterrent for consumers like myself despite how shiny their stuff is lol

    I got into the 4K scene the end of 2016. My current TV is a Sony XBR-43X800D. At the time when I was upgrading the two things said to look for were 4K, and HDR compatibility which I have HDR10, and 4k. One question this video brought up to me, being someone who isn't fully sighted is whether or not Dolby vs HDR10 would be more like 4K vs 1080p on smaller TVs. Really, can't tell a difference like I can between SDR vs HDR, and SD vs HD. From my current experience I like the progress of technology, but at this moment in time, I could have waited a few more years before upgrading seeing that I don't have a lot of new content, and the standards are still becoming more widespread.
    I don't do professional calibrations like the man here, however, I have a degree in broadcast. However most of my experience is from the very beginning of the HD transition so I'm really just catching up with the new standards.

    Looking at the Mad Max scene @10:52 the 4K HDR looks way darker than the Dolby Vision. I wonder if this is mainly due to LG OLED tone-mapping approach (preserve highlights at all costs)...would love to see how a Panasonic or Sony OLED handled the same scene with HDR 10 only.

    I feel like it’s less the conversion that makes the differences but more the limitations of HDR10. Also, I think it’s impressive that some of the videos in a 30mbps bitrate with h.265 meaning it’s a near equivalent of 60mbps in h.264 yet UHD Blu-ray is everywhere from has a limit around 80 mbps. I think the Apple TV is a Blu-ray killer.

      So long as your tv is Dolby vision. For hdr10 only TVs like Sony 900e blu rays players are the Apple TV killer!

    great explanation Vincent. I guess I have to just wait for dolby vision to be supported on my Sony 930E. I watched IT in dolby vision but it converts the movie to HDR 10 and now I understand why the movie can seem a bit darker and not highlighting some details especially in dark scenes. I think Apple TV 4k is best set to 4k SDR for anyone not having a dolby vision capable display or you will run into the problem Vincent just explained in the video, but only if the movie file is in dolby vision. I currently keep the output to display 4k SDR so my menus look bright then I select to match frame and content to ON this way its a win win because your set will switch to the proper HDR mode, but ill sacrifice detail with dolby vision movies in iTunes because my tv is not yet dolby vision capable.

      Henry Sermeno I’m in a similar boat. But I have the 900e so it’s not updating to Dolby vision. I wonder how it works with Netflix. Maybe it’s just better to watch Netflix in the native Sony android app. I wonder if that delivers native hdr10 file. I fee like even HDR Netflix on AppleTV is a source Dolby vision file that is poorly converted for hdr10

    This would be even more powerful it, instead of comparing UHD disc meta data with AppleTV HDR10 meta data, you compared Apple TV DV meta data with the meta data Apple assigns to that same content when converting it to HDR10.
    One might surmise that the UHD disk could be authored differently from the DV file that Apple is using.

    Nice presentation! Still, what I do not understand, is that wherefrom did the statement "that this all happens inside aTV (and not inside LG)", come from???
    What I read from aTV spec (only DV profile 5) and DV level specs, I conclude (maybe falsely, would love to learn better), that a DV L5 movie needs to have HDR10 base layer.
    In HDR, so many things are handled inside the display, that I would as easily say - the artefacts show how LG managed to do its tonemapping. DV needs to go via validation process with Dolby Labs, but HDR10 is at the mercy of every vendor.
    PS The MaxCLL/MaxFALL values from Panasonic bluray player seem to be really off the charts (10000/4000). The aTV outputs of 1000/400 tend to be the standard values seen on most HDR graded things.
    White clipping beyong 1k nit mark is also known as a strategy for many tonemappers in today's HDR panels, only Samsung has been reported to do a roll-off. Sonys, for example, are known to clip anything beyond it's capabilities.
    Even though the picture differences shown in that video are undeniable, the mere difference in MaxCLL and MaxFALL values causes the tonemapping engine inside the display to provide different response.
    Also, the show with aTV OSD causing shift in highlights does not prove anything. This menu lowers always the luminance of the rest of aTV UI (meaning darkens the picture), what in that test caused specular highlights to move below LG's clipping/knee level. That's how I explain it.

      The captured metadata was from the Apple TV 4K box, independent of the LG TV, hence the statement.
      Re OSD restoring clipped specular highlight, we initially thought so too, but lowering the Contrast value on the LG OLED doesn't even restore the lost specular highlight to anywhere close to the same level with UI overlaid.

    • @priitv8
      @priitv8 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      > The captured metadata was from the Apple TV 4K box, independent of the LG TV, hence the statement.
      This still does not prove that the stream was intrinsically modified inside aTV. For that. we'd need to see the incoming stream from the itunes store streaming server. If anyone has ideas, how to capture, I'd be delighted to know.
      > Re OSD restoring clipped specular highlight, we initially thought so too, but lowering the Contrast value on
      > the LG OLED doesn't even restore the lost specular highlight to anywhere close to the same level with UI
      > overlaid.
      Due to the absolute nature of PQ EOTF, just subtracting from numerical value of a pixel (which must be happening when UI dims the picture, right?) will also move it to a lower spot on the PQ (or gamma) curve, producing reduced luminance of said pixels on screen as well, according to the EOTF. I am not sure if changing the contrast value does the same or even has the same reach in change.
      At the end of the day, this whole HDR signal processing is so complex, having diverse implementations and not well understood in the public yet, that I wish someone who's been actively developing these display management systems, would explain it here.

    • @waltervanbergen7493
      @waltervanbergen7493 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      paul Danny That’s the same I am wondering too. It doesn’t make much sense as neither any tv nor the AppleTV is HDMI 2.1. If this is true anyway then maybe, just maybe, the AppleTV and even TV’s can be firmware upgraded to eARC and maybe even HDMI 2.1. Any thoughts on that Vincent? I bought the cable out of curiosity and it works fine. Bit pricey and my other HDMI cables work fine too (just mid-priced HDMI 2.0 high speed cables).

    Very interesting again Vincent. And a very peculiar decision how to handle HDR10 when a Dolby Vision is the source file. The only way to really solve this I guess is to have two different source files on the server? One HDR10 and one Dolby Vision? I can understand that from a storage point of view it’s not desirable but all this artificial scaling isn’t doing much good. Although those few 100 extra TB shouldn’t be too problematic for a company as Apple. I’ve send your finding to the Apple team. Especially to just throw in fixed meta data values is totally unacceptable. At least that information should be applied somehow in the movie. Not sure how they’ll do that but this is silly.

    • @ericimi
      @ericimi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter van Bergen Dolby vision is metadata , you do not need two files . The file has HDR10 as the base and then the Dolby vision metadata is applied over it . This is why if you put a Dolby vision disc in a non Dolby vision campatible player it will play as hdr10 , it will just play the base layer and not apply the Dolby vision metadata. I am unsure why apple chooses to handle it the way they do.

    • @waltervanbergen7493
      @waltervanbergen7493 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ericimi exactly, this is how it works on a disc with an HDR10 base layer and an extra Dolby Vision layer with the respective metadata. But this is not how the AppleTV seems to work. The file itself is already in full Dolby Vision and the HDR10 is somehow a downgraded version of the Dolby Vision version. And the bad thing seems to be that the static metadata used for the HDR10 version is the same for every movie and not specific for the movie itself. That’s quite bad in my opinion. It destroys the whole idea of providing the necessary data to display the right HDR as intended by the director.

    • @ericimi
      @ericimi 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter van Bergen You are correct. seems like a dumb way of doing things considering that not many TV's have Dolby vision in comparison with ones that have only HDR10. I assume that this method they chose was in collaboration with Dolby and Dolby preferred it this way to make there version look superior and worth it . I had a B7 oled and now a Sony x930e and I watched transformers disc in Dolby vision on the B7 then in HDR10 on the 930e and the difference were minimal . In fact it looked better on the 930e because it was tested at 1300-1500 nits and it made it look spectacular. Dolby vision is better but how much better is the question. The Sony TV will get Dolby vision update by the end of the year though .

    • @patalb4374
      @patalb4374 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walter van Bergen correct!! And don’t let anyone tell you otherwise! I tested this with both “Resident Evil” as well as “Lights Out”. BOTH are labeled Dolby Vision. I took it out and played it thru “HDR” and pictures on both movies suffered greatly. Blacks looked too cartoonish, where your friends are constantly asking why do the blacks look like that? I prefer to keep it on Dolby and just buy HDR movies until the Full update comes around in the Spring.
