      This is no where near the most beautiful piece of magic I've seen. That would have to go to Teller's shadow screen rose trick or Kim Young Min's award winning routine with sand, which turns me into a child every time I watch it, closely followed by Yann Fisch's cup and ball routine, just for the skill involved. There all well worth a watch. although Derren browns faith healing show is defiantly up there for me watching some one who's lived with pain, have a moment of relief even if its only a temporary and or a placebo fix is a beautiful thing and just goes to show that the real magic happens inside your own head

    Watch it again. From 5:26, he starts emphasizing "D" words: "Don't let me see, Don't let this lot see, Don't let the camera see. When you're Done... carefully put it it face Down, writing side Down... Don't let anybody see..." Tricky Derren!
    As far as Ode to Joy, though, I'm stumped. Unless it's simply the most common tune that's "traditional... or classical" that he suggests at 5:11.

    • @cathalbutler
      @cathalbutler 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The only problem with your solution is he picked his tune at 5:24 which is before Darren started all the D words. Your system would only work if he changed his original decision in between the time he thought of it and when he wrote it down.

    • @macnolds4145
      @macnolds4145 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah, all that is misdirection. Derren Brown's crew simply starts to softy play "Ode to Joy" via hidden mics in the midst of all the noise. Then the pros do the rest.

    This was sooo beautiful. to give this man who doesn't play see just how his actual skill translates trough his emotion and movement of music by the expression of his face and eyes. He looked like we all do at our happiest moments, proud and thankful. This was great! And the same goes for the orchestra...They could also get the gratification of how receptive, musical and present they all were in the moment, together. Just wonderful!

    Most of Derren's tricks seem unbelievable, but this one seems kind of straight forward - as soon as someone started to play a bit of Ode to Joy, the conductor nodded his head and gave positive reinforcement to that person who then played louder, causing others around this person to start playing it as well, until the tune spread across the entire orchestra. Had the conductor been facing away from the orchestra it would've been much more surprising (unless he happened to pick a piece they'd recently been working on).

  • @lmc4964
    @lmc4964 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    my wife is a classical musician , she enjoyed watching this. One of her suggestions was the list that Darren had probably had~200 that weren't full classical pieces and probably another ~75 would be difficult to conduct under these circumstances so the conductor's eye would be drawn to about 25 possibilities. After that there would be clues based on was he looking at the violin section etc. If true still brilliant!
    with the orchestra , as he picked a piece they would all know there is a chance one or more were actually playing a part of it so once he finds them the others will fall in quickly. My wife thought it would be much more difficult if the conductor had picked something less common

    • @coma13794
      @coma13794 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, there's almost always a forced choice that appears to be a free choice. However, how the orchestra specifically started to play that, that part is still a bit mysterious based on how this was presented.

    • @soundbreaker2485
      @soundbreaker2485 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @davidlean1060
      @davidlean1060 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      And don't forget, Darren probably had lots of little, subliminal clues in and around the set also. We don't get to see those, but I'm betting the musicians were bombarded with subtle clues and hints all day!

    • @bernadette4567
      @bernadette4567 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree! I was kind of disappointed with the musical selection. I wish the conductor had picked something a bit less obvious. As a musician myself, I’ve always thought how this particular piece even sounds a bit like musical scales so I don’t think it would be that hard for the piece to pop into someone’s head and start playing it and then the conductor heard it and they all cued off of him after that.
      It was still very nice to see the human dynamic between the orchestra and the conductor though :)

  • @macnolds4145
    @macnolds4145 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Ok, detectives. It's a beautiful effect, but there are many ways to achieve it..
    - For Part I, we know Derren has selected a specific person and prepared a specific collection of songs. Derren could have watched film of the conductor gesturing for a few specific, distinct pieces and memorized the hand movements.
    - Furthermore, we don't get to see the pieces on the sheets Derren provides. He may have filled them with works that this specific conductor is unfamiliar with-- in fact, they could even be made up, but believable, nonsense. For example, Derren could write, "Gluck's Ophelia #4". Hence, the conductor has very few real selections.
    - For Part II, Derren and his team have to sneak a peek at what the conductor writes. This can be achieved a million different ways.
    - Also, ahead of time, they prepare hidden mics in the stage and quietly pump in the selected song as subtle background music over the orchestra's initial startup noise. Eventually, of course, these professional players will hear "Ode to Joy" within the chaos and adapt.
    - Lastly, through the magic of video editing, any hiccups or small errors can be smoothed or deleted. It's possible, for example, that there were some misses or that it took a few tries for things to work out.

    He specifically says place the paper face down on the lectern, there's a reason for this, he could have said fold it up and put it in your pocket but no, it must be placed face down on the lectern (he instructs this twice).
    The lectern has either a camera underneath it or some other way to view what he wrote. This is then relayed to one or two members of the orchestra who start it all off.
    If not a stooge in orchestra, then it's being subtly played through a speaker at low volume somewhere hidden within the orchestra seats.
    A simple but well delivered trick.
    Sorry if I ruined the magic 😀

    To be unfair isn’t Beethoven 9th 4th movement the most famous piece of orchestra music ever.
    Easy to recodnise if your neighbour is playing it, and play along.
    As usual I put myself into the mind of the composer and thought of a piece, first thought was Beethoven 9th 4th movement aka “ode to joy”
    Or maybe derren planted that decision in mine and the conductors head……
    Oh btw: this symphony was first played in 1824 in Vienna. Got a massive boost from a clockwork orange among others…..
    So by no means is it most famous because it’s the EU anthem. Personally I think it’s tasteless to take the most popular music on earth and lay claim to it so it will be forever associated with the EU.
    They call it a national anthem while simultaneously claiming not to be nation just a club for free trade………..that has a flag, Supreme Court that can over rule our own countries highest court, coopted national anthem and maybe one day, an army…… but definitely not a country.
    It’s just a free trade club, don’t all free trade clubs have songs,flag, super national powers and the potential to form an army.
    Don’t let those racist brexit people fool you into believing you’re being slowly assimilated into a European superstate.
    And even if we were, so what? German dominant European super states have always work out in the past. Losing your national right to self determination is certainly not worth having an argument over….
    Am sure my great grandfathers +uncles who did some work in Europe back in the 40s would agree.
