    When I was a kid in New Brunswick, my friend’s uncle had a big Timberjack Porter with a screaming Detroit in it. You could always hear when he was in the woods even a mile away!

    This brings back memories , when I was in my late teens My Dad let my brother and me log the back end of our farms with a John Deere 440 skidder and a couple small bulldozers for the skid way . I still have that old 440 skidder and now I'm 67 . Great video hope I run into more , be safe

    Always good to see the old school logging action. Still not sure why they couldn’t put a steering wheel on them, makes my Deere look very modern for a 45 year old machine.
    Just noticed your red seat cushion, but shouldn’t harass you too much. I’m sporting an old rug on the Deere 440B, but going to splurge on new seat cushions. I only use it a few weekends every year for cleaning up deadfall and wind blow downs. Quick service on the husky and I’ll be ready for skidding Saturday morning.

      Ya I need that cushion on the cold days lol.

      Why would they put a wheel on something that does not turn?🤔

    Excellent video it's nice that you are cutting the red oak trees because nature takes them over and makes them into den trees and nests . In hilly ground I run chains on the front of my John Deere tree skidder 440A the nice part about the John Deere is I can sneek right up on my cutters it runs so quiet verses the Detroit diesel engine one of my cutters years ago had worked around the skidders with Detroit diesel engine and he always said I appeared out of nowhere where the Detroit he could hear for more than a mile away. What year model of a C 5 tree farmer is your skidder I used to have a C4 forwarder about that same age or older but it had a Ford 4 cylinder diesel engine it was severely under powered even with out a load of wood in the bunks

      Hi Clyde, I think its a C5B, it would be nice being a little quieter lol

      where did you find tires for your John Deere . I have a 440 not sure if it's a A or B and don't know the difference . My Dad had the engine rebuilt to 100hp and the winch rebuild but needs a new cable . I also have a little John Deere 440 bulldozer with the 2cycle G M Jimmy nothing sounds like this thing

      @@markbuilt there is a place called Pomps tires and they used to have or could get the the 18.4 x 26 16 ply skidder tires they are expensive but at least you use the machine with good tires and a good agricultural tire store should be able to get the skidder tires too here in northern Minnesota it's not been a problem with getting them

      Keeps trees from landing on the winch, had a dead red oak get stuck on there...id prefer to not have that happen again.

    That one large log made things challenging until you got it winched up tight to the rear - no doubt that log was heavy. I noticed logs being stripped for the building - thanks and cheers

  • @SteveQ270
    @SteveQ270 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why do you only run chains on the front?

    • @rollingupmysleeves
      @rollingupmysleeves  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Too much traction will break something in it - usually a rear planetary

      @@rollingupmysleeves yes that is true the weight of the skid keep the back tires biting the front chains are critical for cutting thru snow and climbing hills

    When I log I don't come out with less than 6 to 8 trees. Fuel is too expensive to screw around with.
