This is probably one of the best T&F reviews I have seen in a while. You are straight to the point, and you let the viewer decide their favorite dub and narraotr. If can't wait for your thoughts on seasons 4 and 5! Good work dude! :)
I've come to love Coal/Henry's Special Coal more and more, it just makes you feel so sorry for Henry. I have to say I always thought it was strange they introduced a 'cure' for Henry's illness and then gave him a redesign straight after that made it pointless anyway (no wonder later episodes kept using it), though the more I look at it, it sorta ties into the Fat Controller's handling. There's a recurrent point in Coal that Henry is costing him a crippling amount of money and it would be more productive to just replace Henry with another engine, and yet he never does. It felt equivalent to a farmer having a working horse with a bad ailment, the choices were expensive medicine, an even more expensive operation, or just putting it down and getting a new horse for a fraction of either price. At first the farmer chooses the more sustainable compassionate choice of medicine. After a while it can't heal the horse anymore but it has proven so dedicated and hard working within that time the farmer just goes 'Screw it, give him the op, make him well again'. It really shows the Fat Controller doesn't view his engines as commodities.
I thought it was odd how the Ultimate solution followed directly after the Temporary one. Personally, and this goes for the RWS as well, I would've had the Flying Kipper take place a few stories Coal, like put Whistles and Sneezes in between the two episodes, or at the very end of the story, and it just works far better as a conclusion
This is pretty awesome season 1 has always been my favorite a lot of great stories while Ringo Starr was the first narrator I heard I always stick with good old George but this is amazing and I can't wait to see more of these in the future
A very unique video in a wonderful way. I like how you compare all the different narrators which I've not seen in other reviews. Very well done and enjoyable my friend ☺️🚂🚃
I think the narration is very subjective, if you grew up with one or the other narrators you have a natural preference, for example, growing up with the UK dub means ringos voice just ‘is’ Thomas for mine, but I appreciate the reasoning for your choices here. Good review!
I really agree with what you said about james and the "troubsome trucks" episode. There is so much more to him than his vanity yet thats all he has been for years
@@thomasthesmallengine7550 Now that I think about, maybe that's why the Brenner era comes close but not close enough to beat the classic series in some areas. They just didnt boil the characters down to one trait
I think the reason why James is stuck being vain was because of Edward. Edward is portrayed as the oldest train in the group, despite being small (before Thomas shows up). He would’ve ended up being scrapped for how overdue he is, but the stories he had shows how far he went as a character. Edward is the most developed: he is wise, helpful, and never gives up; he’s like Rev. W Audry’s answer to Tillie, the Little Engine that Could.
@@Zacman1123 A lot of Ringo's charm is that he's pretty deadpan, but yeah in Season One, he does sometimes feel a bit dull next to the other narrators. I noticed that in most of the US versions, you can really tell which lines he redubbed because he suddenly sounds way more enthusiastic.
I tend to prefer George's narration as well (Ringo sounded a bit unenthusiastic in the early points of Season One, to the point you can really tell which lines he dubbed over later in the US version), the exception tends to be lines they redid to sound more 'goody goody'. The ending line in the original Thomas and Gordon/Thomas Gets Tricked or the opening for Troublesome Trucks/Foolish Freight Cars for example.
My only problem with Edward and Gordon/Edward helps out is that say all the engines were bigger than Edward and they used thomas's model in the sheds in that scene versus in the rws story they had in the sheds Edward Gordon Henry a red engine 98462 and 87546
I understand they were being faithful and adapting as much as they could to not stay too far from the boons but certainly one additional line change couldn't have hurt. Perhaps it could have been,"Most of them were bigger than Edward and boasted about it"
There’s no way George Carlin says “I suffer dreadfully and no one cares” better than Ringo Starr. No way. Ringo actually gets the emotion of that scene, Carlin doesn’t.
I've listened to both. Ringo puts too much emphasis on the word dreadfully, and says "no one cares" with absolutely no tone. George you could make the argument isn't putting much into it, but to me that felt deliberate, as if Henry was just defeated. Ringo sounds like he took one take and said it like he had to impress Britt how well he could say the word dreadfully.
@@thomasthesmallengine7550 I do notice that in a lot of your judgements you talk about Carlin having more distinct voices for characters. Well, here in the UK 90%+ prefer Ringo to Michael Angelis, even though Angelis had more voices. More does not mean better.
@@RBenjo21 I admit I haven't watched a lot of Angelis stuff, but from all the UK fans on twitter talking about him after his death, I gathered the general UK opinion was that Angelis surpassed Ringo (At least in his first few seasons). And if you make the argument that more voices doesn't always mean better, then Ringo's voice would have to have some exceptional quality to it to surpass Michael and George, which I don't think he does. Most of what I hear about Ringo from UK fans is how much emotion he puts into it, which is the other big thing I already analyze with the voices.
4:04 I felt season 1-6 was amazing with the narration Season 7-11 is ok but there is some Flanderization with the characters but there are some episodes however.. like respect for Gordon The CGI era is fine but not the same to what britt did there is some good episodes to watch on The big world adventures - it’s crummy and awful kicking Edward and Henry out of the steam team is a bad move to make
there is a Ringo Starr dub of the US one of thomas and besides a few words being changed its just like the UK dub and it bugs me since I've seen these stories a lot and the weird diologe changes throw me off for the Carlin dub anything after season 2 with Carlin it feels natural and not forced oh and I grew up with both dubs so while some George Calin stories feel forced lines the Ringo dub will be my personal favorite of the two dubs in fact some of the episodes I had both the Ringo dub AND the Carlin dub
Good reviews for season 1 and 2, I think you would benefit from talking about the story, characters, music and modeling. There’s too much focus on the narration.
Well I try and do both. I already talk about the characters, stories, and music, though admittedly I'm not an expert on train models. The narration segments consume a lot of time just because I'm making a case for the narration on each episode with evidence. That's also something different that I haven't seen done before in other reviews.
5:18 Hey look, it's the episode people forget about when calling Thomas dark!

Thank you. It may be a little bit before I get to those seasons, but stay tuned!
Playing for an engine is shunting, spinning on a turntable, racing, etc.
This was a pretty great review. Can't wait to see more of these in the future!

Pretty Great Take on it!
And people call him a dictator, man they clearly have not seen these episodes.

Onistly I think that Ringo’s voce is much more calm than Gorge Carlin and that his voce was perfect for the flying kipper but that’s just my opinion
I always thought of Ringos narration as a parent reading a book to their kid
Perhaps he heard about how Reverend Awdry originally got the idea to write the Railway Series and based it on that.
Seeing James cry is heartbreaking
James is my favorite character
I also love Edward Duck BoCo Thomas and Toby
Duck is my favorite I also like Edward and Sir Handel alot.
The music where Thomas travels/is a runaway in Thomas and the Trucks is probably my favorite piece of Thomas music.
For some reason i just realized New shape Henry doesn't have his wheel arches.
He doesn't in season 1. After season 2 starts he regains them and keeps them for the rest of the series.
It’s because mix of A1 and a C1 Atlantic
But after flying kipper he was turned into a black 5
Or with the splashers, a jubilee
This is pretty awesome season 1 has always been my favorite a lot of great stories while Ringo Starr was the first narrator I heard I always stick with good old George but this is amazing and I can't wait to see more of these in the future
Completely agree with you on Troublesome trucks. Best part of James’s ark and shows actual character development.
*arc
I should also point out I love Ringo Starr's US narration in Thomas Goose Fishing with Thomas' line: Oh, dear. I'm going to burst. I'm going to burst.
That line does a good job of sounding like Thomas is in pain.

I love these types of videos great job! Keep up the great work 😊
I've come to love Ringo Starr's US dub of Edward Helps Out due to the more emotion.
Great review’ I can’t wait for the next one!
Thank you. Hopefully the next one will be out later this week.
Have to agree with you, Foolish Freight Cars is great! I love it when James shows the greatness inside of him.
Apparently Ringo did his narration in the span of 8 days.
Wow
I cant get too mad at that, dodge it take them a year for the show creators at just getting the first season filming completed?

Well I don't think any writer believes that one character cannot develop for the sake of another character. That really doesn't make sense.
