The question of whether or not boxing works in a streetfight is about the dumbest one ever. In fact, of all the martial arts it probably has the most evidence of its efficacy in the form of youtube videos, and it's even prevailed against multiple attackers on several documented occasions.

Lol thats awesome! I think most people that say this mean that there are rules in the ring, and street fights don't have rules. Everything we think we know about fighting is gone the second we get surrounded by 3 dudes that want to fuck us up outside a bar at 2am. What's that jab going to do for me now? Have we ever trained against multiple opponents? Do we have a fight IQ high enough to even deal with that? Are we fast enough, and have the stamina to run away safely? If so, could we time it enough to actually get space to escape? One thing that really affects our fighting game is stress(or fear, whatever you call it) we're going to need to a strong will in order to overcome situations where we are outnumbered or outmatched, and if you always keep your wits, you will make the right decisions and rarely be outgunned, even against high odds. @hard2hurt Man I really dig your content, and look forward to future videos

I worked as a bouncer for a few years and got to see a lot of twenty to thirty something males assault each other. Saw the jab drop guys on at least three occasions. Crumbled up holding their nose a couple of times, or clipped on the chin and out cold once. Saw it as a set up for a cross or flailing hook a few times as well. But, remember alcohol or a stimulant was usually in the mix for most of these alterations.

Last time I "defended" myself in the street I was locked up for assault. The guy was in a coma for 3 days. Not that I hit him hard but the fact that I hit him a few times hard, his drunk ass did the stanky leg, fell, and hit his head on the concrete. I stood at the scene because one, I felt bad, and two, I figured since it was "self defense" I wouldn't get in trouble. But I was wrong... I whooped him so bad that I was considered a weapon because I've had the "proper training". So my advice to anyone watching and reading my comment, if you know how to fight because of proper training don't even bother with an average street dude unless your life is really really at risk. Not worth it at all. You will be looked at as the bad one to the cops and judge. So in my opinion don't use any skill in the street unless your life is in danger. You're pretty much more dangerous them the average douchebag.

As a kid my uncle used to make me throw the jab over and over again. He would say you lifted your shoulder or you dropped the shoulder or you pulled back. His whole goal was to create a punch that had no cues whatsoever and as I got older I could always land the jab. As I progressed I started to throw what some people call an upper jab from the below the waist or from waist level. I liked this better because it both gave my opponent the illusion of an opening and because it really opened up my line of sight. I liked to counter punch so that the left hand carried low encouraged attacks but with good foot and weight positioning coupled with being able to keep the chin tight to the left shoulder and being able to roll the shoulder allows you enough defense. The jab also is thrown from out of the line of sight of your opponent so with no cues the punch will land easily. Lastly I think that it is often better for a boxer to lead with the hook or check hook in a street fight. Most people who have never boxed can identify a well thrown short left hook. The punch thrown correctly defies the laws of physics LOL or at least it appears to. The weight transfer is backwards and the weight starts on the lead foot and ends on the back foot so that the punch is being pulled somewhat towards the person throwing the punch. It's trajectory is thrown from a weird angle and is usually thrown in such a way when thrown right that the recipient does not see the punch and if he does it is literally a fraction of a millisecond before it lands. Positioning is extremely important but if you know what your doing it is easier to get good position to throw the shot in a streetfight then it is in the ring, because the opponent in the ring has an idea of what sort of danger he is in.

For small gloves or no gloves you have to think more in the MMA striking realm. You have to rely more on head movement, parries, and footwork. I spent alot of time training in the kickboxing realm and the MMA areas and not all the defensive techniques from kickboxing transfer well to small gloves. You can't shell up or hand block the head well outside of big glvoes so you have to block with your whole arm and elbow. The upside to small or no gloves is you don't have to move your head as much to get out of the way, they can't hit as hard as in big gloves, but the impact is more dense and painful.

In a “street” situation I agree not telegraphing is ideal if they’re aggressive, pushing forward and you need to get something in to try to follow up with something else, but a good power jab with the same untelegraphed shoulder movement and forward movement can knock a guy down if you catch him square or allow you to get into grappling or follow up striking range if you don’t have any options to use defensive foot work to improve your situation.
But in a more ring/duel situation the pump jab can become several things other than a predictable movement-a faint to setup untelegraphed jabs, a pump jab you follow through with instead of faint to catch over reactions, or force a retreat or movement to “cut off the ring”.
But yeah, hit with shots that the other guy can’t see, but will feel. Whether it’s letting a guy run into your fist or whether it’s giving the other guy a punch he thought he could see coming.

I highly recommend a jab if not for distance, for putting the attacker on their heels/off balance and follow with real damage. I faced off two (ended up being brothers) guys who attacked my girlfriend and I in our vehicle. One hit the vehicle with hammer fists to the back window of her SUV, so I got out as if war was declared. Dude did the whole 'yeah, you want some, you got it' with hands up, I took two or three steady steps toward him and then closed the distance with lunging jab to the chin and got him on his heels then followed with a nighty night right. The ol 1-2....over. Other dude came running at me like a bull 'that's my brother!' I tried to ole him and let his momentum take him headfirst into the pavement, but he got some of me and we both went to the ground. I was up a hair quicker and dropped him with a straight right. 'What did you do that for?' was the first thing out of his mouth when he sat back up. Maybe I knocked him back into reality or something. I dunno. No. 1 brother still over there on the ground wheezing and sputtering.
So....I will say, the jab is a great weapon to gain the upper hand when it comes to distance, balance and the fight. I didn't land the jab as clean as I know I can, but it was enough to tilt the exchange in my favor. Texas 2, Florida 0.

I'm glad you covered the danger of the jab on the leading foot. It's unbalanced and looses all the speed and snap. It's known in some boxing circles as the "Lazy Jab". Even if you are jabbing to set up combo or gauge distance you should never leave your arm out there and, as you said, NEVER lunge into it. (if you are a right handed fencer and tend to box southpaw you may need extra training to overcome this tendency) + A lazy jab requires more effort in recovery (it's slow, hence "lazy") and will get you knocked out against a quick opponent. Daniel Whiting heard that all before 😴😂. I have no doubt there are people who could hold their own, but against a legit aspiring prospect? Who does nothing but train his craft? Cmon man let’s not fool ourselves.

Daniel Whiting Well me personally MMA. But it’s silly to think you can not train everyday, and dominate someone who does, just because of past experience. He’ll there’s been times I’ve had an injury and been out of sparring for a month, and the guy I was cracking starts cracking me.

When i started boxing 3 years ago i was taught about weight distribution but there is a difference between having weight on the foot or streching into the foot which is happening here with the back and front foot....
Long story short you habe to practice it a long time to habe the feeling of it

good vid! I would just add a scenario in which after throwing quick jab your opponent would try to land loaded up & huge hook (probably right one) so it'd be great to have prepared good ole one & two - after quick jab, solid right cross to open target/face or whatever would bring an end to disagreement.

Honestly... I do train for the streets and not the ring. I’ve been in the ring and on the mat before.
I’ve also been attacked on the streets before.
So, here’s why I avoid certain training that’s for the ring or mat.
The mat: I was on the Varsity Wrestling team in high school. One of the things that held me back the most in wrestling were my instincts wanting to go for a full Nelson, sleeper hold, striking, etc.
So my training for the mat conditioned me to fight with a set of rules that don’t exist on the streets. I did learn a lot of useful things from wrestling and all, but I eventually quit the team cause of how conditioned I got to following the rule set when I wanted to be conditioned for life or death situations on the streets.
The ring: not nearly as bad as wrestling. Cause most things that there are rules against you kinda wouldn’t want to do anyway for legal issues

There have been a few times that the jab has actually ended the fight where noone actually got hurt. After a few jabs the other guy didn't want to fight and he just walked away cursing at me. I think it's a psychological thing. The guy realizes he's been hit a few times, it hurts and cant figure out how to defeat the jab and sees that I was calm fighting and not throwing wild angry punches. I think a calm fighter is unnerving to some people. I always think of fighting as sparring.

Jab can be use to gauge opponent distance compared to your reach. If it connect, even lightly, followed up punch will have high probability of connecting too.

In my younger days I was in many street and bar fights. I love to shoot pool so when in a bar I was most of the time on a challenge table.
*One day back in the early 1980's I went into my favorite haunt of the day, The American HotelTo shoot pool, I went to write my name on the challenge board and some guy suckered me in the back of my head, accusing me of stealing something at a party the night before ( which I did not do) anyway we ended up going out the front to fight.
*His buddy came out also saying if I finish with his bro he's next.
(at least I didn't have to fight them both at the same time).
*We faced off, I was wearing my triple-soled Dayton biker boots ( I'm not a biker or a schooled fighter I just learned by doing it). Anyway I threw the first shot, It was a well-placed, Hard body kick to the liver, The guy dropped like a ton of bricks and was done in pain, I spun around to face his Bro. and he took of running up the block, I went back in and shot pool in peace...
*The moral to the story is; Yes a well-placed, hard body shot can and will end a street fight just as fast as a head shot
*This guy was not expecting it and never seen it coming...Now I'm 68 and my fighting days are but memories but I still shoot a mean stick,,, ; )

Jab and low leg licks are the most effective strikes in my opinion. In a street fight, you usually have an inexperienced guy lunging at you and you can end the fight with a powerful jab or straight.

But this is you are thinking as a Boxer, as TKD Person I disapprove dis.
I just lift my legs as a decoy kick like yeop chagi or dolyo and do the double take down and pin him with Kesa Gatame, works every time in street fight.
If the opponent more than one or two, I just need to outrun them in sprint marathon.

Its very common for fighters in all combat sports to underdevelop their jab.
The weakest jab I have ever experienced was from a Boxer who exclusively used his "jab" as a distraction to set up his cross.
A jab should absolutely be considered to be a potential knockout punch. That doesn't mean that its a problem when somebody feels as if another punch is more likely to get it done. But that should be a statistical notion born from experience. Not a wall of prejudice that stops one from developing a proper jab in the first place.

I played Cosmic Ark like crazy as a kid and the space travel round of this Atari game really brings this point home. Just look straight at the ark and let your peripheral vision pick up the meteors coming at the ark and react to them. Same thing with that jab telegraph. It pops right into the peripheral vision center, very easy to react. By the way, you can find a Kimbo Slice boxing video showing the same principle as this video's trying to make.

  • @sukursukur3617

Another telegraph is high kick preparation. Balance leg turns and hands go down a little bit. Opponent says me by his body language, "close to me and break my balance ankle"

    I always love your videos.
I am one of those "karate nerds" with multiple black belts (Real and earned in the dungeon days.) I love the snap and no BS way you show the jab. In my opinion, a "grown ass man" should never expect to knock out another "grown ass man" with a jab. Hollywood has conditioned people wrongly. Apparently, feeling the distance and messing up someone's timing doesn't make for good cinema.

There are two schools of thought... if you are a trained/accomplished fighter most street fighters don't know what to do with polished boxing/Martial arts techniques. However, if I'm really in self defense mode, I'm leading with my power hand and trying to end it early.

You have many types of jabs and i will say all jabs are usefull in a fight meaning competition street bar ocean or in the toilet ;-) the jabs i use r the basic jab. The tapper. This jab, a light tap, can be thrown in quick succession. The backstep jab. The power jab ( straight lead in jkd ) the double jab and the counter jab. and no im not hating so keep up the good work i like your videos

  • @Thejoeordinary1

The Dempsey drop step adds power as you’re basically putting most of your body weight behind it into the jab ,but, yeah, it’s easier to block, and if the opponent knows what he’s doing , can counter it easier. I’m with CN on this. The few times I used a jab in an altercation was to bring the opponent’s hands up to open him up to a single or double leg, as my background is wrestling. Once on the ground it’s usually pretty much over either by cooler heads prevailing at that point or a more convincing technique is used.

  • @BradYaeger
    @BradYaeger 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'd like to add that a jab isn't limited to a fist. Maybe it's an eye poke or you have a blade, or it's a kick . You still train the same way with it. It's either a set up or a "get back" move.

A hard jab usually works good in a street fight because the majority of people only have 2 starting moves. Either they throw a bunch of wild hooks repeatedly with no defense, or they dive for someone's legs.
Diving for the legs = drop your weight, turn and elbow them in the back of the neck. Wild hooks = either a hard jab, or kick to the groin, uppercut palm to the jaw, and a punch to the throat.
Those are my choices. The last one may get people into legal trouble though if they actually used it.

A good jab mixed with defensive footwork has saved my arse on the street. When they cant hit you they get frustrated. Footwork and reflexes. Dont over commit in a street fight or you will end up on the ground with ribs and head kicked in. Thanks for the vid.
