Recognizing Relationships as Opportunities to Give

  • Journey back with us, some 35 years ago, when our storyteller was sharing an intimate conversation with Trungpa Rinpoche, her esteemed mentor.
She had recently returned from a month-long retreat, during which she met a man for whom she had developed profound feelings.
Despite this newfound love, she found herself grappling with an intense loneliness. This paradox intrigued her - she had been led to believe love was the antidote to loneliness, yet here she was, in love and lonely.
In her quest for understanding, she turned to Rinpoche. His reaction was an unexpected burst of laughter. He explained, "The practice is working. When we really become practitioners, we realize that relationships are not about satisfying our needs.
They are not a guarantee against loneliness. Rather, they present us with the beautiful opportunity to give."
This wisdom forever altered her perspective on love and companionship.
A recount from Judith Simmer-Brown, from the Tricycle Archives.
