My partner of 22 years left me (for the third time) and I am about to leave Canada to see if I am to semi or permanently retire to Spain. I have been so fearful. Then, a ladybird appeared (plans will materialize) and then a Hawk looked directly at me....soar and get perspective on your life...and now, Pema came on...didn't mean to click on this talk on fear...but it started playing....We are not alone in this universe ...my fear factor is being challenged and is diminishing - thanks to two nature appearance and this wonderful spiritual person. I am into my third year of AA sobriety...no longer need to escape my emotions ....the journey is so precious. Blessings to all.

I encountered this talk after many questions on fear, violence, hatred, war, protection, survival, resilience and motivation, and found this among the deepest teachings I ever encountered. It gives clarity on many hidden obscurations that are traps in life. Most importantly is that I feel what she means and have an immediate sense of liberation and motivation, which is not easy knowing how our society is educating us in protecting our ego.

Pema, I had a very hard day. I was very lonely and sad. I was kind with myself but the pain continued. I looked for words of wisdom from you on TH-cam and was brought to this recording. You spoke directly to me. I was able to listen and deeply understand what you were saying. I relaxed into it and it eventually dissipated. From my heart, thank you for making your teachings available. It helped me tremendously and I plan to okay it for my yoga class tomorrow.🙏🏻

Dear Pema: I bought your "Wisdom of No Escape" and "Start Where You Are" in the early and mid-1990s. They helped me clarify my raging and conflicting thoughts and emotions so much that I documented what I had learned from your teachings in my diary. In fact, your words help me handle my post mid-life crisis and the many wandering "demons" about how I run my own business and life. I will always remember you and your teachings fondly. When I am I Nature I am the most present in my body! I love it! The Earth gives to me my missing electrons & minerals through my bare feet & the soothing of the birds’ songs & the breeze, rustling of the leaves through the trees, also soothing! And I am refreshed! I hope that I may help the Earth heal, as well, as it seems to heal me & give me peace! ♥️🙏🏼

I've been distracting myself from my FEAR of REALity with more substances and behaviours than there are 12 step meetings for.

    In every moment "I Am"
You don't need to know anything or do anything in order to Be.
Whatever is happening, good or bad, happy or sad, "I Am"
"I Am" is my true identity, unqualified isness. Everything else comes and goes.

Thank you for this deeply helpful talk Pema Chödrön. As you said, honesty is part of loving-kindness . If we deceive ourselves and pretend that our mind is more peaceful than it is, we can't transform our suffering with loving-kindness. If we run from our fears using addictions, they just grow. I found that many of my fears were based on delusions and that sitting with the fear during meditation I was able to see through the fear and let the truth emerge.

Hope it is going well for you!
I love Pema’s book ‘living beautifully with uncertainty and change’. I listened to the audiobook, fantastic.
If you like her, you might like Eckhart Tolle too? He has similar messages.
Lastly, a huge part of my transformation and empowerment, healing, was learning about attachment trauma. I found out I had fearful avoidant attachment and it was developed through response to trauma, unstable stuff. Being able to look at the root issues, core wounds and beliefs and heal from those, are powerful in changing how we think. It’s like doing a deep dive and clean out, really helps with being able to take in and apply the info in this talk.
Otherwise it can be like putting a fresh coat of paint on rotten wood.
Fixing the underlying issues, helps it all!
Thais Gibson,The Personal Development School, has a TH-cam channel that was how I worked on healing my attachment style!
      I wish you well 💫

Six minutes in, for the first time! Thrilled.
I *know* I’m in the right place, listening to the right person! And, I know that I’m fulfilling my reason for living: doing what I can in my lifetime to change the intergenerational patterns that are so painful.
My daughter and her children are all that’s left of an amazing family. But one person in particular I think, is really struggling. And I see other problems as well that I think may be a continuation of what I grew up with.
And me, well! 🙄 You would not believe some of the undesirable aspects of me and the way I live!
Regardless of all that I feel a sense of courage and peace that I am walking the path and heading in the direction I want to go. Deep breath and one more step!

I'm very new at this, the getting in touch with myself and really understanding mindfulness. This talk has helped me understand more clearly why I "check out" with various substances or habits and now knowing it is based in my fears. I would recommend to first meditate before you listen to this talk. For me it helped me clear my mind of all my current regrets and judgements from the day before so that I could really be present and absorb what Pema had to share. Namaste and Peace to all of you.

If you're new to this then find another teacher, a real one. Pema covered up murder (by HIV infection) and sexual abuse for decades and never took responsibility for it. Is this the kind of person you want to become? If some young woman in your family was sexually abused by an alcoholic Buddhist monk and Pema got nasty with her when she tried to confide in her would you want her as your teacher? The answer should be clear! Buddhism is not a path of "just meditation" there are many texts describing how to lead a good, moral and ethical life, and Pema is not only not living up to that life, but she covered up abuse, didn't apologize and continues to teach.

They talk about me behind my back, tell lies and then smile in front of me. I realise I gave these idiots too much power over me . I'm trying my best now to distance myself from these people . And loose my dependency on being liked . I'm doing my best now to like myself. Instead of waiting to feel good when I'm praised .

The thing to understand about addiction is that self-destruction is the real point, not feeling good from the high the substance or the activity provides. Getting smashed (there's a reason people use this language to talk about this) with alcohol, isn't to get drunk.. the point is the hangover. The goal is self-destruction.
We look for strength in what weakens us because we're running from deep-seated guilt feelings.. often their source when they are especially problematic is the use of projective identification by an abusive parental figure (or other important adult in early life) - the abuser who makes their naive victim carry the abuser's own guilt that they cannot hold, for them.. so the victim becomes a container for the abuser's unconscious guilt feelings, and the sickness is passed on. Sometimes, also, one has a hypersensitive temperament that makes what would otherwise be not a big deal to other people, feel as though it is quite persecuting and therefore guilt inducing (Ronald Britton writes about this - cases of narcissistic disorders where there was apparently no trauma in the sufferer's past, in his paper Subjectivity, Objectivity, and Triangular Space - but you'll need some familiarity with Wilfred Bion and Melanie Klein's work for it to make sense).
So things that weaken us satisfy that unconscious need to destroy ourselves due to deeply rooted unconscious guilt. We're not really holding ourselves together with the intoxication of whatever addictive behaviour we like. We're validating inner masochism. The narcissistic, borderline, schizoid personality disorders all represent different pathological defensive tendencies against this sense of guilt.
If anyone reads this and finds it helpful, I suggest you look at Don Carveth's work, as well as Melanie Klein, Wilfred Bion, and the London Kleinians (Ronald Britton for one, but there was a whole group of them).

I see what the man means about depression being "juicy". On the one hand I can't imagine why anyone would choose depression and yet I suspect that, in my case at least, there's some perverse pleasure I get from wallowing in my own self pity 🙄. It certainly has... it feels as though it has an addictive quality to it 🤔
Or maybe it's simply preferable to being in touch with the deeper pain of separation and fear and all these things. Certainly I can distinguish between depression and sadness and I suspect the former is a maladaptive coping mechanism in response to the later.
I will try remember to sit with it next time to... what's that "place it in the cradle of loving kindness"?
    I simply can't imagine!
    But I will try.
    Thank you, Pema 🙏🏻🧡

Meditative Posture opens us to whatever we see and do and are. We sit and open ourselves - seeing exactly who we are
setting ourselves up for opening from rigid to flexible. Yes, I will be thinking on this today.
