New California bill hopes to cut Daylight saving and move to Standard time

  • As we get ready to move our clocks forward one hour this weekend, there's momentum growing to get rid of this twice-yearly time change altogether.
There is disagreement over which direction we should take: either Daylight saving or Standard time. Daylight saving in 2024 starts Sunday March 10, 2024 at 2 a.m.
Newly proposed state legislation aims to repeal Daylight saving time and put California permanently on Standard time: but not everyone is 'springing forward' in support of this idea.

That referendum was either; flawed or sabotaged. States are not permitted to stay on Daylight Saving Time year round without federal approval, but this is what was presented to the people for some odd reason. This fixes that severe incompetence by bypassing any federal oversight and approval process, like Hawaii and Arizona have long since done.

You cannot simply compare experiences between Michiganders and Hawaiians, and the ones who claim expertise are charlatans and practise opinionated pseudoscience at best! Standard Time itself is a compromise based on railroad scheduling and not on the sun much at all. So much so, that high noon is pretty well impossible for the vast majority of US.
The biannual superstitious ritual mumbojumbo is more to blame for negative affects than the time chosen itself. It’s going to force many more people to buy blackout curtains! This isn’t Alaska! Early daylight times may sound amazing, but only if the daylight is ending even later! Before 2007 when people had to manually turn clocks, there were a lot less complaints. Why? Because by early April sunrise was 0530 PST and it was changed to 0630 PDT and nobody felt tired by waking up in the dark (0600 was already bright). There would be a lot less bitching people if we return to early April time change, and especially if we go back to standard time in early October instead! Sunset goes from 6:30 pm to 5:30 pm. People getting off at 5 still drive in bright sunshine and won't be depressed like they are now in early November.

I completely agree. Permanent standard time works well for Arizona because it’s on the western end of Mountain Time Zone but I think it’s a terrible idea for California. California is mostly in the middle of and slightly east within Pacific Time Zone so you have way too much wasted morning light and even in summer not very good evening light. Hoping and praying that common sense prevails and this bill does not pass. I know people are sick of time changes and I also know it’s impossible to do permanent daylight saving time without federal approval BUT please California. NO on permanent standard time. Keep the changes if you must but summer on standard time would suck plus you would be FOUR hours out of sync with the east coast not just three. This is a terrible bill. Hope and pray for its defeat

@@georgepilzer4542 I personally would think Arizona observing daylight savings time in the summer would be better, as it doesn’t really go to far to the west in the time zone, not even too close in comparison to western Kansas/Oklahoma or western Texas in Central Time portion like Van Horn. In Phoenix, with daylight saving time in the summer the earliest sunrise would be at 6:18 AM instead of 5:18 AM, and its latest sunset would be at 8:42 PM instead of 7:42 PM. Fun fact: the daylight saving time version of that is pretty much the exact same in Fort Worth, Texas. And especially in eastern Arizona, it gets crazier in the summer for its longest days, it’s summer extreme in sun up times being at 5:11 AM - 7:27 PM! And the daylight is definitely starting 4:30 AM , which already qualifies as too early. They shouldn’t have opted for permanent standard time in 1966. And in Yuma, it’s summer extremes on daylight savings time for sun up times would be 6:30 AM - 8:51 PM instead of 5:30 AM - 7:51 PM. Sure, it may be crazy hot in the summer, but who doesn’t love late summer sunset. If I was living in Phoenix, I wouldn’t mind permanent daylight savings time instead because I would love the summer extremes for sun up times to be 6:18 AM - 8:42 PM even though it would have the winter extremes for sun up times to be 8:33 AM - 6:20 PM. And the average sunrise time would be around 7:25 AM, which really isn’t too bad. Singapore and Malaysia have set up their time zone to be one hour ahead of the solar time, so the sun is usually setting at 7 PM (they are super close to the equator), even though it causes its sunrise time to usually be at 7 AM, and still never gets too crazy late due to being close to the equator, and I definitely think that sounds great! I think average sunrise time being 7:00 AM or even as late as 7:27 AM is okay, but I would rather have it at 6:40 AM if permanent daylight savings time means the average sunrise time will be 7:40 AM. In western China, it gets insane! All of China is on one time zone, doesn’t observe daylight savings time, but it still causes the average sunrise time to be at 9:05 AM for the farthest west point of China, by which it’s earliest sunrise might be just early enough at 7:37 AM, but of course, it means it will usually not be early enough but usually be very late, but they have very late sunset times there too, especially in the summer of 10:37 PM. But although its earliest sunset is 7:41 PM in that point, its latest sunrise is at 10:27 AM! I am like, no thanks! They don’t need children going to school in the dark all year round. It might be ok in the winter, although there are extreme concerns of terrible drivers, especially those in a rush, who don’t pay attention for pedestrians, or in some cases, will even completely disregard pedestrians and put their lives in danger (those who do that should lose their drivers license and have their car confiscated immediately, along with first asking them to remove their belonging from their car if for some weird reason they won’t be going to jail for it). But it is normal in much of mainland US and all of Alaska for children to go to school in the dark in winter, including Idaho (Mountain Time Zone portion), western Montana, Michigan (eastern time zone portion), western South Dakota and western North Dakota and western Nebraska (Central Time Zone portion), eastern Oregon (Mountain Time Zone portion) and northwestern Washington state.

It's actually the exact opposite. Think about what Daylight Saving Time actually is. You're moving the clock forward an hour. What this means in practice is that everything is scheduled an hour earlier than it would be. A 9 to 5 job becomes an 8 to 4 job. A 6:30 alarm becomes a 5:30 alarm. And keep in mind that circadian rhythm is determined by the sun, not what the clock says. So in reality, standard time is better for night owls because they can sleep in a bit more.

This needs to be done nationwide. I still feel like crap since the time change happened 3 weeks ago. Keep it locked on standard time all year. By doing so, you remove the jarring effects of both time changes, and the days would wax and wane gradually across the seasons, and keep winter sunrises at an acceptable time.
Early sunrises happen naturally in summertime. I usually am able to sleep in until around 8am, so sunrise at 4:30 or 4:45am wouldnt bother me. I'd be asleep for a few hours past sunrise.

  • @7ru32ur53lf
    @7ru32ur53lf 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

It is rather time changing that has negative impact on the body. When we set our clocks back in November, according to studies, they have found there is a spike in car accidents in the evening. We don’t need daylight time disrupting our sleep at 4 AM in the summer and see it end at 8 instead of 9. There is no perfect option, but there are less setbacks in permanent daylight savings time than permanent standard time. If we hate both options so much or if people tend to not want either option, maybe the halfway in between is better. But keep in mind that we are on daylight savings time for more than half the year, so that technically is the standard time despite not being labeled as such. For the Central Valley and Bay Area, permanent daylight savings time means daylight at 5:00 AM - 9:00 PM around summer solstice and daylight at 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM around winter solstice, while permanent standard time in the same region means daylight at 4:00 AM - 8:00 PM around summer solstice and daylight at 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM around winter solstice. And when we turn back our clocks in November, daylight in that region is 6:00 AM - 5:30 PM! That is crazy to have daylight start early and end early. And with permanent standard time, the sun would be setting before 6 PM 1-2 days after the fall equinox in September for the region. That feels icky and sounds stupid!
For western SoCal, permanent daylight daylight savings time means daylight at 5:00 AM - 8:30 PM around summer solstice and daylight at 7:30 AM - 6:00 PM around winter solstice, while permanent standard time in the same region means daylight at 4:00 AM - 7:30 PM around summer solstice and daylight at 6:30 AM - 5:00 PM around winter solstice.
Another thing I must point out here is that in the northeastern region of California and the farthest eastern region in California in SoCal would be experiencing with another whole kind of madness! The sun travels from east to west, which means that farther east in the time zone on the same latitude will get you earlier sunrise and earlier sunset, and farther west in the time zone on the same latitude will get you later sunrise and later sunset. With that being said, sunrise and sunset times in the far eastern region of California are earlier! It gets so early in winter that some people there want to be put on the mountain time zone to negate the ridiculously early winter sunset time! Permanent daylight savings time would also help negate that problem in that region. Do you want to know the earliest sunset times for the different points in California? It goes as follows:
    San Francisco: 4:50 PM
    Los Angeles: 4:43 PM
    San Diego: 4:42 PM
    Death Valley: 4:32 PM
Southeastern corner of California: 4:32 PM
Farthest north point of the farthest east edge of California: 4:27 PM
The latest sunrise times for those same regions during standard time portion of the year (not referring the day before turning back clocks in November, as it is even later in that time) are as follows:
    San Francisco: 7:26 AM
    Los Angeles: 6:59 AM
    San Diego: 6:52 AM
    Death Valley: 7:00 AM
Southeastern corner of California: 6:43 AM
Farthest north point of the farthest east edge of California: 6:47 AM
If you were to put the state in permanent daylight savings time, you just make those times shown there one hour later. As you can see, sunset times get wildly early for those regions in California. Yes, that also goes for all of eastern Nevada, except even crazier than that! And on daylight savings time in the summer, the daylight already starts at around the 4:50 AM or 4:45 AM for the far eastern region of California. That may sound early, but it’s actually okay because it is farther east in the time zone and closer to Mountain Time Zone region, even though it isn’t in the Mountain Time Zone. But if California was to be put on permanent standard time, guess what would be happening there in the summer? You guessed it, the daylight would be starting at 3:50 AM or even 3:45 AM around summer solstice, while always ending before 7:30 PM! That is just nuts! I am sure they don’t want that! The earliest sunrise times in the summer on daylight savings time are as follows for the same regions:
    San Francisco: 5:47 AM
    Los Angeles: 5:41 AM
    San Diego: 5:40 AM
    Death Valley: 5:29 AM
Southeastern corner of California: 5:30 AM
Farthest north point of the farthest east edge of California: 5:25 AM
Now you can see how all this explanation makes sense! And on top of that, when we end daylight savings time in November, in the far eastern region of California, the daylight starts at 5:30 AM, only to end at 5:00 PM! And guess what would also happen? In the eastern edge of California, all of SoCal, and all longitudes starting at not much farther east than Fresno, would have average sunset time of before 6:00 PM if the state is put on permanent year round standard time! That would mean those regions would have sunset times of before 6 PM for more than half the year, for more than 182 days per year, and in the farther east regions in California, that exceeding 200 days per year or even exceeding 215 days per year! Just think about it for a minute. I am sure you can’t disagree that it would be insanely odd and just ridiculous! Places like Malaysia and Singapore have made smart choices and have put their time zone a bit more ahead, not to make their sunrise time ridiculously late but to make it usually be at early 7 AM (with occasionally getting to being before 7 AM) to make their sunset time to usually be at 7 PM (even though it is at early 7 PM for the most part and very few times of the year dipping to before 7 PM but not much earlier than that). So please, do not pass that bill! It is so ludicrous and ridiculous how the senate and representatives don’t want to vote on Sunshine Protection Act that is always reintroduced by Marco Rubio in every March that would put everywhere in the nation on permanent year round daylight savings time, with the exception of Arizona and Hawaii! I don’t want to rewind my clocks this November again! The senate and representative should vote on it for once! And I hope they vote to approve it! It doesn’t come without few major flaws though, as in regions in western Oklahoma and western Kansas that are on Central Time Zone, already have latest sunrise of 8 AM on standard time in winter, and it would make that to get to 9 AM instead of 8 AM if Daylight Protection Act is passed, and would make their average sunrise time in that region to be around 7:45 AM and around 7:55 AM for Van Horn, Texas, and similar issues in places that are far west in it’s time zone, and average sunrise time for the year being at 7:05 AM or even 7:20 AM may sound reasonable, but later than that just gets to be too much! I think for them, they should have more discretion over whether they are on permanent daylight savings time or permanent standard time, but that is another story! But it would be amazing if Daylight Protection Act is signed into law, to get rid of time changes, and early winter sunset times, while keeping late summer sunset times!

When we were in standard time by the end of winter you still get 1 to 2 hours of daylight without any need to change your clocks. You people who think Daylight Time being permanent is a good thing should do your research on what happened back in the 1970s and why losing an hour of sleep is bad for your health and leads to heart attacks and car accidents, energy costs also rise due to daylight saving.
Give permanent standard time a chance in the pacific and you might like it, there are better benefits to your health with permanent standard time. Just ask people in US Territories including the states of Hawaii and Arizona and they'll probably tell you why they are fine with standard time and why they don't have to change the clock. It's the only real standard point. But what it says on the clock at that point of the day, what we decide to call it, is irrelevant. We could switch to a 36 hour day based on the alphabet and it would be just as logical. (Bonus, it's still divisible by 12 so it would be easy to convert between the two.) Noon could be A o'clock. Then a day would start at noon as well, so when you get up in the morning it would still be yesterday and it wouldn't be tomorrow until after lunch!

I like that proposal too but let’s do it nationwide and not just in one state. Only problem I see with split the difference is it puts us on the half hour rather than the hour. But it does seem like best solution as standard time is too dark in the evening and dst is too dark in the morning. Split the difference gives us some light on both sides. It’s a compromise we could all agree on that would end the time change. Totally against permanent standard time though. I need my afternoon sunlight. Also come on California.
