Love this album! But I really think this album could have benefited more from a different track listing order. Something more like this: 1. This is Love 2. Cloud 9 3. When We Was Fab 4. That's What It Takes 5. Just For Today 6. Got My Mind Set On You 7. Somewhere Else 8. Devil's Radio 9. Wreck of Hesperus 10. Fish On The Sand 11. Breath Away From Heaven
I have wonderful memories of buying this album (yep, on vinyl, ages and ages ago when it was new) with my dad. Whenever I'd get to spend time with him in his later years, he'd take me to some record store in the city and let me pick out a few things. I was a pre-teen and going through a completely obsessive Beatles phase, but now having exhausted all of their albums, it was picking up on the solo releases by the individual members. Cloud Nine happened to be new at the time, but a Paul McCartney greatest solo hits (double album, I think? It had a grey cover and I think him with a piano on it) had recently been released, so I was able to get that, too, and discover all that had to offer. Fantastic memories! I just relistened to Cloud Nine after years and years after watching your top GH albums video yesterday, and I think my favorite from it would have to be...Ughhh...that's a tough one because I LOVE Wreck of the Hesperus, but of course Set on You is amazing, and so are actually all of the upbeat ones! I pretty much totally agree with your video, here! He reminds me a lot of Tom Petty (who I really know nothing about other than his biggest hits that have had tons of air play that everyone knows). Makes me wonder if I should look into him next! Thanks again for making me remember these old classics! :)
My opinion is similar. Dark Horse, and ATMP, are the best of the post-Beatles albums, but... I love, McCartney, Band on the run is genius- Double Fantasy is Lennons best solo work. When Cloud Nine came out, I was 16 and about three years into my Beatles indoctrination- I was born in '71, so I had heard Beatles and solo music my whole life on the radio. When we was Fab, was the first Mtv single I heard, so I had to buy the album, and that was it. I will not go into the one throw-away song, but this album is perfectly arranged, and produced - Jeff Lynn of course, and an absolute revelation to the songwriting talent of George. It garnered quite a bit of attention, being 20 years after 'Peppers-"It was 20 years ago today", and the Beatles were quite in vogue at that time, but it has a long term value we see now 30+ years later. Jebus Christ, am I really this old? Great video.
Great video! JT, your approach to making videos is awesome and comprehensive. Love that you have carried the history of rock videos so far, and they are so incredibly educational but also enjoyable. Now i'm going through the Harrison videos and I love that you're doing ALL of them--it's just a really cool comprehensive approach you don't often see. Thanks.
There's a great live version of Cloud 9 from the Japan tour. It's a different one from the version that's upon the album. It's funky as hell and George's slide guitar shines bright more than ever.
Fine album. All of it. Great stuff. If thats what it takes is great, fish on the sand, this is love is one of my favourite george songs, when we was fab brilliant, devils radio, wreck of the hesperus.....the ballads are nice and of course got my mind set on you...Clapton plays beautifully throughout.....fine album.
Another strong recommendation for you to do a Pink Floyd album review series. I know there are a lot, but it would be EXACTLY in your wheelhouse, and i have friends who would eat it up (me included)
Love "Cloud 9." Except the cover art and title. I think if it had the cover art of "Living in the Material World," and was titled "Dark Horse" it would looked cooler, at least for 1987.
I agree That's What It Takes is my favourite from the record as well as Cloud Nine, Devil's Radio, Someplace Else and Wreck of The Hesperus. A solid George album to be sure, although generally I'm not always a fan of Jeff Lynne's production. It works pretty well overall here, but for me its always been a tad too glossy and I like that organic analog sound. I enjoy a lot of music from the 1980s, but usually by artists that came up during that era (The Smiths or The Police, for example). Artists like George who started their careers in the 60s and 70s who continued their careers into the 80s never wore the MTV generation's style well because they produced their best music during a period when they were the young generation guiding the culture via their art on radio and record. To remain relevant in the music video era, which was much more shallow by comparison, meant certain stylistic compromises were sometimes made which occasionally or sometimes often dated the songs rather than creating a timeless feel. Got My Mind Set On You (hit that it certainly was) is a good example, and the greatest offender for me...I've never been able to stomach that song- too repetitive and that heavy 80s drum sound adds a layer of cheese I've never enjoyed....but I do enjoy the Weird Al parody. If Handle With Care was on this album, instead of Got My Mind Set On You it would have fit beautifully I think. Anyway, a fun review and I look forward to watching your other George Harrison album reviews. Keep up the great content!
Love this album. Was my favourite when it came out. BUT - the hate on “Gone Troppo” ? It was my last bought George Harrison album (mainly because EVERYBODY - hated on it). But I love it. I would play it as much as much as my top five - Brainwashed; Cloud Nine; George Harrison (1979); Gone Troppo; All Things Must Pass. I just find it uplifting. Love your reviews by the way. Thanks
@@JTCurtisMusic That’s the Way it Goes ( love the slide on this ) and Troppo itself. The one I really can’t handle is Circles. I know this was left over from Beatles sessions - but just isn’t a strong song. The whole album I find fairly bright and feel good. I would have loved to see him perform this whole album live ( maybe in a small pub in Byron Bay )

I quite enjoyed When We Was Fab One more album to go after TWB's albums (Brainwashed), and that's George's entire career wrapped up. What next? PS: as for the Madonna issue, I think Like A Prayer is Madonna's best song. By far the most introspective song from her early work and the closest she ever got to making controversial statements
5:38 Glad I *am* not the only one. George Harrison Music makes me feel paranoid when in that state. Try using Dada and Rush to make those thoughts go away next time. xD
Cloud 9 is an OK Album. Very mainstream, but in that catagorie a very good one. I prefer the unique Harrison albums that no one else could ever do. LITMW, 33 1/3,George Harrison, even SIE. So typical Harrison style there. Cloud 9 was good for bringing him back into public and Radio. But personally I listen to Dark Horse more often. But it's a good one, no doubts about that.
Great overview of the career of the legendary George Harrison. The late 80s has had great music even though it is laughably dated and cheesy in hindsight.

I like Weird Al’s parody “this song is just six words long”. As for the album “Cloud Nine” I like anything with Clapton on it cuz I’m bias AF

Fish on the Sand? Wreck of the Hesperus?
