    Can we do a “Brands that have failed under L’Oréal”? This is probably more of James’ territory, because L’Oréal has destroyed Kiehl’s, CeraVe and Redken. They get their hands on a company and just change the formulas with cheap ingredients.

      @@laur83yep, the beauty industry, specifically makeup, is a monopoly. That's why indie brands struggle so much to grow and when they do they get acquired by either Estée Lauder, L'Oréal or Coty so they can get wiped out/under control.

    I used to work for Prescriptives at a counter in a Bullocks/Macy's. This was in the Los Angeles County area. I loved it, and it was so fun making the custom foundations and powders for people. Whenever I made a powder it was like a show/entertainment for the customer as well as for people walking by. I also used to love using the machine to press it into a compact for people, right there, you would have the compact and loose powder to take home too. We made custom formulas for actors, news anchors, all kinds of folks that were in front of a camera. I can still look at people and tell what undertones they have and what colors would be right for them. That cosmetics line trained my eye to see color in the most amazing way. Their concealer was the very best. I have never found a better one. 💔

    I don't really get into the business side of brands as much, so I don't know which brands are owned by which companies... But I still remember the first time I realized that all of these brands aren't actually seperate entities and that a lot of them belong to a few big umbrella companies. I was so shocked. 😅
    To me it seems like these big companies don't want to invest in the development side of any given brand, so now they essentially just trade. If they can buy it for a price, sell so much that it pays out and then shut it down, it's a win for them. They don't buy brands to keep evolving them. They buy them to milk the money and then let them die out (in my opinion 🤭). It's actually kind of sad.

    I think Smashbox were massively affected by the closure of Debenhams stores in UK/Ire. They had counters in every one.
    GlamGlow also pulled out of the UK/Ire around the same time as Smashbox... 😎✌🏼💜🌙

    Fantastic video, Robert, and well done for speaking up. Just look what Estee Lauder Companies Inc. has done to Bobbi Brown... their collection of blushes was amazing for range, quality, intensity of the pigments, now they are terrible. Same with the lipgloss, less shades, horrible new formula. Ojon is another victim, it was the best hair product line for dry, curly hair, lasted less than a year with them. And of course the decision to kill Prescriptives was short-sighted and ill-advised, unless they aimed to eliminate a rival to other brands under their umbrella such as Clinque?

    Normally it starts off alright at the beginning of the take over, then after a while you notice that your favourite products just aren't hitting the spot anymore... I think they must fiddle with the formulas slightly. Jo Malone is a perfect example of this.

    Omg! Prescriptives was the first place I ever got makeup. I was a junior in high school and I looked so fresh because I could cover up all the red in my skin. I'm 45 now and it is literally the only foundation that I could get to stick to my face and not come off during the day.

    I used to looove Jo Malone. The best citrus fragrances in the market with wonderful candles. Then, Estee Lauder bought them. I turn around, instinctively ever since. This parent company ruins everything.

    I know that things seem to change when EL purchased Deciem brands, NIOD and The Ordinary being two of the popular ones. Very soon after, they had a significant price increase, and dropped several products, including their division called Hylamide that had some wonderful products. I decided to try some of Good Molecules products and found their formulas much better for my sensitive skin!

    Over the years I’ve come to realize that a brand being purchased by EL is the kiss of death. EL makes one of my favorite fragrances ever, but I won’t buy it any longer. It’s the same with Coty - they buy a brand and muck it up or shut it down completely.

  • @kc9eow
    @kc9eow 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Conglomerates like Ester Lauder will overpay for brands in order to reduce competition for their own brands as well. They will estimate what the future worth is and pay that price because it’s still cheaper than what the damage to their bottom line could be.

    • @kc9eow
      @kc9eow 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Even if the smaller brand fails, it’s still a profit on paper compared to the prevented future losses.
