How Does My Family Communicate With Him?

- We rarely discuss our communication outside just the two of us, but today we share some dynamics in my hearing family with Ryan being Deaf. I've seen Ryan overcome communication barriers and noticed that people often miss a key part of talking with a deaf person. My family has learned to communicate with Ryan over our years of dating, and I hope this provides insight into deaf and hearing relationships.

I love that when watching on laptop I can move the CC up to Ryan's head level so I can look at him too not just read the text
OMG I DID NOT KNOW YOU COULD DO THAT! Thank you so much, internet stranger 🥹
On some devices it works!! On some it doesn't work. But I'm glad it works for you
Same lol
Not wanting to interpret all the time makes sense (tiring for one), it encourages all the important people in your life to learn how to talk and build their own relationships with each other without you being the only bridge. Glad they're making some effort.
That's true Mallory
It’s really interesting to see how quickly Ryan’s eyes move between your hands and your face. It almost looks like he’s always looking directly at your face, but he flicks up and down from your hands to face very quickly. It’s very cool.
Thank you for sharing these personal details. I'm sure that discussing even these general topics can feel intrusive, but people can get a lot out of knowing your experiences.
My hearing partner often interprets for me for family and friends, and it's nice seeing conversations about that dynamic 💜
We feel very similar to you where she doesn't want to be 'stuck' as the middle person, and wants me to have a more direct connection, but is more than happy to interpret when necessary.
You guys are great! I’m so glad to see you back in whatever capacity.
Thanks so much!
Love these vlogs! So happy you’re uploading again ❤
Glad you like them!
I’m soo happy with these regular uploads!!!!
:D
Hi Ryan and Ellen. This is a harsh reality. Ryan is a deaf man in a hearing world. Most people don't sign. I often found it terribly sad that deafness is so isolating. Ellen, I see the sadness you feel when you say that you don't interpret every conversation. I can tell you that my Mom learned to fingerspell but my Dad did not. Often, as I watched my Dad and my deaf wife's interplay, my Dad would often mime or motion to what he wanted her to do or see. If you guys have kids later in life, it is vital that Ryan naturally shows his babies how to sign, that's HIS language, the language of the deaf. It is almost unbelievable when I would see my infant sign Mama for the first time. Talk about getting emotional. I'd like to mention to Ryan that he has an amazing vocabulary. Good job Ryan. Love your guys videos. God bless you.
Such a nice comment, thanks for sharing ❤
Yes, us in the hearing community can be more inviting to the people whose first language is the sign language because they are deaf.
@jackcsaffell5641 - I'm sorry, but I wanted to address something you said about Ryan having an 'unbelievable vocabulary.' While I understand you may have meant it as a compliment, it can come across as implying that DHH individuals typically don’t have strong vocabulary skills. That assumption feels degrading and overlooks the diverse abilities and achievements within the DHH community. I just wanted to bring this to your attention so we can be mindful moving forward.
@@Zabzabzab most likely the Deaf person in her life had limited vocabulary and they were comparing the two? Either way you are correct. I’m happy for all Deaf who grow up knowing sign so they do not have language deprivation, but sadly, here anyway, it is the norm.
@@NovasTH-camName agreed... I know that a LOT of dhh went through language deprivation but I just wanted to point it out that even though this person TRIES to compliment him, I still think it's inappropriate...
For a hearing people , can be intimidating too communicate to deaf person. I'm hard of hearing w hearing aids but deaf without them. I could understand your signing without CC, makes me happy😊
Thank you for this video! That's nice that your family is learning, even if it is intermittent. It shows that they are interested, which is wonderful. Nobody close to me has even attempted to learn-- not even basic ABCs. It's very isolating. Ryan is lucky 😊
I’m sorry no one has learned for you. You deserve it and I hope people learn for you one day.
So sorry for that. I know just the basics. There was a deaf school near my home, growing up i always wanted to be fluent in ASL. Reach out if you wanna sign with me
You are both so special in doing these videos. Thank you so much.
you guys have been a favorite channel of mine for a while now! in january itll be one year since i started studying asl, and its a good feeling to be able to watch your guys’ videos muted with no CC and understand everything :-] i remember watching your videos when i first started learning and comparing how i watched them then (lots of pausing, replaying, checking CC) to now is a bit surreal…! thanks for all the videos, you two!!
Here in UK some schools have sign language in the curriculum, I wish they did when I was at school. This was a lovely video thank you guys ♥♥♥
That's an accommodation that we don't often think about. I am glad Ellen's family pick up sign language here and there to communicate with Ryan. ❤
Okay, you came into my YT feed. My wife started out her teaching career in special education as a deaf interpreter. She has congenital ear issues, was told she might go deaf, and learning ASL. She has hearing loss but can still hear (we're 50 yo now), but her deaf community has sort of written her off since we got married 10 years ago (i am hearing and do not know ASL (or any other languages really). I've subscribed 😊🗿👽🗿
I agree. If you interpret for Ryan all the time, your parents won't learn sign language (or deaf culture like eyes to eyes) to communicate with Ryan. So, Ellen did the right thing by letting Ryan and her father to develop a Son - Father-in-Law bonding relationship.
My husband is korean and my parents dont speak much english, the first time my dad met my husband he also always said "tell him ... , ask him ....." 😂😂 when you said that i directly remembered it 😅 seems to be a dad thing ❤
I guess it must be 😄
I write sentences down every day with new words I learned ! I have a binder full of sentences! I go thru them every day to keep them fresh in my memory! Maybe that can help other people 🙂
Love that! What a great way to practice 😊
Ellen is right. After all the yeas they've been together, her family she feel comfortable getting thenselves across directly with Ryan. Being expected to be the middle person is not fair. I'm glad they've picked up enough so they have a direct relationship with Ryan. It must feel more like family like that. Good video. Thank you for posting again. I just enjoy seeing you both.
Awesome guys! Happy Saturday! 🤟🏻
I still remember seeing you guys when I used to work at Stater Bros. I was so shy to come up to you guys !😊
I get what you mean. Having a middle man vs talking directly is different. Talking directly builds more deeper connection and relationship I guess. And it helps everyone to learn the language and practice.
Great video, loved hearing about this topic!
That's great. I am happy to see you, my parents and my family are hearing but I am deaf and hearing impaired when I was little I had two hearing aids but currently I have a cochlear implant. Always I can listen to music, speak well and also learn sign language in Spanish and English. I hope you have a good week.
I’m glad you two are still together …
aww thanks that means a lot! We love eachother and pretty sure we will grow old together
Since I have been watching Sign Duo videos, I can’t get over how much Ryan looks like Jeremy Jordan (broadway actor).
👋 Ryan and Ellen !! I loved to watch you both. Even my future husband watching you too he is learning like you but he picked up well from me.. it normal for family to learn and forgot unless you both coming they will pick up. Fees but it good start and it will get better in their own term .. have good weekend. 🤟 🤟
Love this couple ❤
Ryan do you get the stares from patrons with Ellen? Example if you and her signs and people just stare at you?
I remember one time me and my best friend was at the mall shopping (back when we were teens) and we decided to eat. So we were signing and people would just stare at me and her. One came up very rude. They said were weren't allowed to sign language silently because they think we were talking behind their back. Plus president Regan banning sign language just like they are banning Spanish. I said, she mute so we are signing about school, boyfriends and clothes. Which nothing concern to you. They actually called the police from the pay phone. Back in the early 80's no cellphone yet. Anyway police showed up and asked what us going on. Me and my friend explained about the situation. They told the guy we had right to sign language. They didn't break any law. But for the person who called the police went to jail for misused 911 for non emergency. Of course Regan never did say he changing the law for sign language. Or any law about foreign language. After that, my grandparents let me read the newspaper about that guy got arrested is racist anyway. Just because he didn't like my friend because she from Vietnam and thinking that her family going to plot killing American. I heard he went to prison for 10 years for other crimes he did. That my story of my life.
Wild story
@@mallorykane2843 thank you.
Wow thanks for sharing. Grr Some people
@@NovasTH-camName yes it was. Today I'm glad these people understand how we communicate.
I love this content because its deeper relationship like my family. Me as a hearing impaired, during eating at dining table my family tend forget when is there family topics like family planning, financial, relationships stuff
I was like maaaa or paaa! Im here 😂 sometimes they tease me as well hehehehe
Hardest part when im with extended family… like im not very close to them. They will forget about me all the time. Sometimes dad and I will eat somewhere else. 😂 we will ignore them also!
I LOVE these videos!! Keep it up!!!!!
Glad you like them!
thank you so much for sharing! love you both
Happy Saturday Ellen and Ryan!
Hope you had a happy thanksgiving
Hi from Texas! You guys are the absolute most adorable couple. You've encouraged me to start lessons in signing! I have a question. How do you feel about people looking at you sign over your shoulder? Let me explain. I'm a dancer and I'm used to standing behind my teacher and following her, mimicking her movement. When I watch a teacher while she is facing me I have to remember to do everything backwards from what she is doing. I'm finding the same thing happening with signing. Is this normal? Do you hear from others withnthis issue? Thank you and sorry for the long question!
Just re-watched an old drive-thru video. Was just wondering how those experiences are now, now that we are a little further out from the covid lockdowns.
Maybe we should find out 😊
Y'all are my favorite!! I know this is off topic for this video but I have a question I hope y'all could answer. I've been taking ASL for the past 2 years at school and I love it, the problem is my school doesn't offer a ASL 3 and I don't know how to keep up my signing after this year so I don't forget it. Any ideas?
Holding Ryan and Ellen answer but if not: For practice you could join “the signing room” online, it’s a practice group with Deaf Language Models. Other than that try to find a local Deaf ASL teacher 🤟🏼
thank you both for sharing
Great video thanks you two! 🤟🏼🤟🏼
I love TH-cam videos so much ❤
Communicating with your partner's family can be tough-especially if your family is hearing. You grow up communicating in a way that works for you and your family, so you're used to it. But when you join a new family, like Ellen’s, it can feel like starting over. And since everyone’s older, it’s either harder for them to learn or they’re just not as interested.
On top of that, you have to figure out their communication style-how they use gestures, expressions, lip movements, and so on. It’s a lot to take on! But you love your partner, so you’re willing to make the effort.
This isn’t just about DHH folks-it’s the same for anyone whose first language isn’t English. Personally, I don’t always feel comfortable communicating with hearing people, but I do it anyway because my husband’s family is hearing. Their way of communicating is so different from my family’s, and it took me years to adjust.
Love you guys!
Ellen, when you get emotional (positive or negative) how do you regulate yourself so that you can sign to Ryan and vice versa? For example, you are so happy you are crying can you sign to Ryan and explain things to him while you are crying? What about angry or sad?
Hi Ryan snd Ellen.
Love what you are doing, your video help "two worlds" join together.
Curision question: (for Ryan)
What if you're communicating with speaking with heavy accent or the way their mouth announcing (pronouncate) the word willbe different, then lip reading is not accurate?
That's a great question. Yes when a person has a heavy accent, it is harder to lip read for sure and can cause inaccuracies
Hi Long time no hear from you guys. I hope you guys doing well. God bless you my friends
You both tend to sign more PSE structure in your videos rather than ASL structure. Have you ever gotten any negative feedback from the deaf community about PSE? I ask because I've experienced both where some deaf people are happy that someone is signing and they'll adapt to someone learning ASL but in a PSE structure, and I've also experienced deaf people being offended using PSE when trying to communicate.
Great question I’m curious as well. Most Deaf I sign with with switch to more PSE with me but then switch back to full ASL with each other. It’s very kind of them to do for the sake of communications. Of course they could turn around and sign full fast ASL and tell other Deaf about the dumb hearing person 😂. I’m conversationally fluent but not fluent fluent. Hope Ryan reply’s to your question 👍🏼
Good question.. I'm curious if Ryan signs more ASL with his friends who are ASL users and he switch-code to sign more PSE w/ his girl. My friends who have hearing spouses actually sign more PSE w/ their spouses...
@ in an old video he indeed said that’s what he does 😇
@@NovasTH-camName ah I didn't see that video :) I just started following them, they're adorable.
Yes that is great both of You with family bit My family never sign because they said i can speak very well Even My son don't sign and he can fingerspell that so My grandlids don't because i live far away but they understand me also they text me but right now My left ear already deaf bit My right ear i hear very little low with hearing aid pretty help me so when i was Young i was hard of hearing but i figure out i can't hear nothing i felt sad anyway there is no way i can do but anyway i have interpretar going out like doctor and dentist also in the hospital the have vri interpretar help me alot .... I have not sign for 40 years thank god i still rememeber sign languge i figure out i learn asl is more easier the old English sign languge.... I'm glad to SEE You again hope to SEE u again take care 🤟🤟🫶🫶😘😘
God bless you woman

Thank you 🤗
I have a question! I'm currently learning ASL through my university with a deaf professor. Something she always emphasizes is saying things in ASL order and not signing in exact English, but I've noticed you guys often sign in exact English and not in ASL, especially when Ellen speaks as she signs. Does whether or not a deaf person sign in ASL or exact English depend on area/community? Or do most people within the deaf community sign in ASL and you guys sign in exact English for the sake of the videos? LOVE all you guys do!!
Has Ryan tried the Hearview Glasses? Some deaf people like them, but it could be overwhelming with all the reading.
Thank you guys for another awesome video. 😊 I had a thought occur to me while watching this... I know closed captioning can pick up a persons voice and translate it to the screen. How does it work when someone is signing? Are there programs that are advanced enough to translate signing, or does someone have to edit it?
Someone translates then writes in the English subtitles (the video creator)
Glad you liked the video! That's right and Ryan manually types all of his caption, so it's exactly what he says. I have auto-captions if I'm voicing and I'll edit those too.
Hi 👋 I'm new here. Is there a reason why there's no subtitles? Is it mostly for the hard of hearing to view? A while ago I really wanted to learn ASL❤
so cute !!
😄
My ASL is still pretty rough. What is the best way to start a conversation with 2 deaf or hh people that are already signing with eachother. I don’t want to be rude, but my receptivity is still slow, so sometimes my timing might be off…if that makes sense.
But by not interpeting between your family and Ryan it makes them find away to communicate. I know Ryan doesnt expect your family to be fluent in ASL, but Im sure he appreciates their efforts
Yeah, i do appreciate any effort. it's cool!!
I have a question for Ryan…how do you interact with your doctor? Do they know sign language or do you write it down? I’m hard of hearing and when I first meet a doctor I have to tell them to look at me and speak slower.
Just curious why you guys don’t interpret what his sign language is saying with subtitles?
I’d love to see you do a video with Jessica and Claudia Kellgren Fozard. I think it would be interesting.
what kind of video?
@ Well, they’re a deaf hearing couple as well. How about what it’s like to be in a deaf hearing relationship. You’re both from different countries and have different backgrounds. I think it would be interesting and you learn a lot. Remember ASL and BSL are different, too.
In Japanese culture eye contact is sometimes perceived as disrespectful or intimidating.
hi gus love your channel is it hard to learn sign language how long did it take u miss emma
hi 😊 took me 6 months. We talked about that in a previous video. Love the cat in your pic
@@SignDuoChannel thank you that my baby
There was a great video from you
🩷❤️🩷❤️ about how to teach your kids ASL- Ryan told to just sign and speak at the same time and it will be natural this way.
What was the title of that video????? I cant find it 😥😡😭😨😨😨😨😓😓😓
It was recorded as answer to womans letter.
Hi ❤️ I think the video you are referring to is “Teaching Sign Language: Insights from My Deaf Fiance”
@SignDuoChannel Yes! This one! Thank You🥰 🩷🤍🍓
That’s good that Ellen has come to self actualization of her role. She is girl friend she is fiancé she is future wife. Yes if Ellen is always interpreting for Ryan than people view him differently. They don’t relate to him as an individual and they are getting a view of Ryan as needing help. Though parents don’t say it but they are thinking ok Ellen helps Ryan but how does Ryan help Ellen.
Nice
Thanks
How would one who's missing an arm sign?
seriously?... there are a LOT of DHH who is missing an arm and they can just sign with one arm, no problem.
Well, sign with one arm. I've met deaf people before that have one arm and it's not much different once you get used to their style
Ryan would you ever consider getting a cochlear i hope that's not offensive
At this point, no. But never know I might change my mind later in life.
I was wondering what the small sounds are in a video of yours... I think Ryan makes some click sounds while he's signing... Do you know you are making sound?
Second
Forts
