  • Repairing my dad's Stihl 015L chainsaw.
    Rebuilt the carb, fixed a chain advancing at idle problem, now repairing a broken spark plug cable, oiler sprocket, and oiler cover. Also, re-winding the pull cord, because it broke. Thanks to my Landlord, and also Leon at Leon's chainsaw repair, for helping me diagnose a carb problem! Check out his channel at / chevroletc101

    Very nice. Thanks for the video. I admire your restraint in not cussing when the pull cord broke.

    *I've custom built about 20 of these 1973 stihl 015 saws and it's best to remove the points and condenser and upgrade these saws to the updated electronic ignition module. Module costs under $20 on ebay, is super easy to install and makes this saw start, rev and idle like a new saw with fuel injection. Theses 015 saws will run with a clean set of points and condenser, however they run 10 times better with the electronic ignition module.*

      Yeah, I'll probably do that mod someday! Thanks

      Where do you mount the electronic ignition module on these saws after you convert them? I have the 015 AV model, it has the cushion mounts for the handle, I think it's for anti-vibration. Anyway, I'd like to convert this one but don't know (yet) if there's enough room to mount it inside the housing somewhere out of sight.

      @@bodeine454 *Anywhere that the module will fit. I usually mount them on the floor near the coil.*

      Legend, was having trouble with the point and the condenser will pick one up now online. Wouldn't know if the two springs for the pull start to engage the flywheel if there are any replacements? 😅 Or what they are called? 😊

    My grandpa left me one of these saws! He built a custom backpack thingy for the case, to be able to ride his dirtbike with it❤
    But the dang thing won't start.
    Thank you for posting this, I'm exploring the idea of rebuilding the carb and potentially whatever I need to... 😅

    Same as my dad’s saw. 45 years old and still cranks on the first few tries, even though it’s barely used anymore. Thing is a little beast.

    The trick to get the rope tight was right on time. Thank you for sharing.
    The O15L I have already has electronic ignition.
    The recoil spring came out last night and there are some great videos on how to get the spring back in also.
    Looks like the carb needs cleaning now.
    But it fires off on ether. So probably a carb kit and a soak in the heated ultrasonic cleaner and we should be back up n running.

    I have the Stihl 015 AV model which isn't a top handle like yours, this one has the anti-vibration mounted handle more like a traditional saw. I've noticed a few issue's with this one after watching yours. I just put a new NGK spark plug in it and temporarily rigged a paracord pull rope just to see if it'll start, the one that was on it was broken. I still need to order an air filter, fuel filter and choke knob, this one just spins on the post. I also noticed that the recoil spool doesn't have the C-clip retainer, it just pulls off. Someone also replaced one of the carburetor screws with a black Phillips style screw, I'm hoping they didn't mess up the original threads. I don't know yet about the clutch, clutch hub or oiler gear yet, it may need replaced as well. The saw has a lot of compression, I just want to see if I can get it started and running for now. Also I noticed the the top of my handle is loose despite tightening the screw in that area so I think that the plastic up in there somewhere might be broken and if that's the case I might see if I can find a top handle style case reasonable and convert it to a top handle saw like yours, I believe they're more desirable and valuable. I'm going to get a flashlight and see if the handle is broken in a little while and then put some fuel and bar oil in it and see what it'll do.

    4:56 i had to change mine as well on my 015 in France, and clean the carburetor very clean and change all the diaphragmes and carboard joints because first time i had jus cleaned quickly and changed only the damaged diaphragm but it was not working properly. Now i still have to find the parts that are missing or worn out, but at least it's usable now. Need to change the segment as well because it's completly worn out.

    I have a couple of the issues you addressed in this video with my 015 ...... could you send me any parts numbers you may have of those parts? That would help me immensely. You did a great job in this video ! Very informative and addressed almost every problem this saw could possibly have had. I came here to trouble shoot a couple issues I’m having and you covered all of em .... thanks again !

    I have a 015AV chainsaw. I ordered new coil. It has the spark plug wire and a terminal in it only. the old one had a wire out to points and the terminal on front was grounded. so counting the spark plug wire, 3 hook up spots. new coil only has plug wire and terminal on front. is this a replacement coil to use,? ordered said replaces it. do i make a short wire from terminal to points and ground is made thru mounting screws. Please help!! You video was very helpful so far.

    I have that exact model and have a couple of the issues you addressed ...... do you happen to have the parts numbers snd name / number of the place you got the parts from?
    My saw sputters when it gets warm .... acts like I may have a cut in the ignition wire that’s arcing and the switch connection needs tightening up like you did. You had a guy suggest that if you are going to go that deep into the saw, we should go to solid state and replace with an upgraded electronic ignition. He says it runs much better. I think I will do that part of it. I really could use any information / referral to connections to obtain many of those parts.
    You did a great job and I learned a lot from your video.

      Hi, glad the video helped! I ordered most the parts from ebay, if you want to do the electronic ignition mod, I got that part from Amazon, but have not done it yet. here's and imgur album with part numbers from my orders... enjoy imgur.com/a/FDS7LEn

    Mike, like you and the other comments on this video, I am working on an 015. Do you happen to know why old ignition coil has an extra ground wire and the new coils do not have one?

    Hi Michael, many thanks for your great video !!! The Voice a bit like Bob Ross but for technical stuff - love it ;) ! i just got my grand dads stihl 015. After 15 Years in the cellar i took 10 pulls and and a bit quickstarter spray to run again. Just the oiler was gummed up. I love this pretty little oldtimer and and want to refresh it a bit. So my question is, which chain and sword have you got on the machine. Mine is the original duromatic 30cm sword with 1/4, - 1,3 chain. But i maybe want to change it to a more common 3/8 and maybe 35cm sword. Like i see your stihl rollomatic-e should work with the old chain oiler supply ? can you tell me your chain and sword part key number please ?

    Hi I’m doing the same. Where did you source your ignition? I’m seeing generic I’m sure Chinese ones on eBay for 20ish but not sure which to get.

    • @MichaelJones24
      @MichaelJones24  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi, Yeah I got it on EBay...The listing was called "Ignition Coil Module Fit Stihl 015 015AV 015L Chainsaw 1114 404 3200" it was ~$26

      Thanks I’ve got spark again! I got the walbro kit and the nub it tall on that one too. I have not filed it down yet, it’ll fire and run for a few seconds if I put gas right down the carb but won’t stay running. Is this because the nub is to tall? Thank you

    • @MichaelJones24
      @MichaelJones24  หลายเดือนก่อน

      @lukeparker1638 Yes, I believe the taller nub was keeping mine from flexing the proper distance / screwing with fuel flow... if you file yours down I suspect that'll help.
