Honestly, I appreciate someone just messing around with something outside of their comfort zone getting idea of what I could do with it as far as general tones and not specific riffs. Yeah, whether it nails the specific song is what most people want, but don't need more than one video of that.
being a guitar player and admitting you dont know much about wes borland is wild to me. dude is a literal guitar genius and his effects work and tone he can pull out of things is incredible. his riffs are insanely groovy and infectious. everything from complicated as fuck to figure out to super easy why didnt i think of that shit but again takes that genius to make that simple riff. dude is a guitar god and crazy gear head.
I absolutely love this plugin, it’s got a lot of sounds I had always been looking for in a plugin, a little rougher around the edges and more grungy, having a Big muff voiced to work with a high gain amp is also amazing. But I can’t for the life of me figure out why they made the JC120 model such a big selling point and then didn’t model the chorus of the Jazz CHORUS amplifier.
Check their first 1997 album bro, if you still didn’t. There are really heavy hardcore songs like Clunk, Pollution, and other cool stuff like Indigo Flow song etc… On second 1999 record significant other, they have songs with riffs similar to chimaira first record, they call Trust and nobody like you) Those 0-0-0 and harmonics on 3 fret)
I agree. I just watched another review and I felt the same way... something about these tones that are maybe too specific to Wes and it shows how unique he really is.
Wes is a huge influence in my guitar playing. I think his 3 best riffs are take a look around ( it’s in 5/4), boiler and the truth. Straight forward riffs but super groovy
I’ll echo what I said in the Patreon post. Love Wes Borland and his style. Love his music. Only a dude as creative and unique as Borland can make riffs with that much reverb and delay. But I wouldn’t be able to make any of these work for me 😅
Maybe a lot of the tones are also meant to be blending with or influenced by other instruments in the song, so they feel maybe empty or without direction otherwise. I know Wes plays off of Lethal a lot (the DJ)
the sound reminds me of the old digitech rp boards from back in the day that just had a lot of reverb and delay. Didn't care for the presets and they sounded lazy. I like Wes, but I think other plugins can do his sound better. Love the vid though! You were honest and gave it a shot.
Man, Wes gets a lot of shit because….you know….Limp Bizkit (which i do in fact like), but he really is an underrated musician. His clean riffs and use of clean tones, delay and reverb are really great. It’s definitely an acquired taste of guitar thats DEFINITELY not for everyone lol. But ya, anyway……..so, *ahem* new Chimaira album Rob?
Always appreciated the Bizkit for who the were. Good vibes, catchy vocal hooks. Never felt inspired by Wes's playing. Never gravitated towards any tones. His style was never must for me. Much respect to the Limp family. Definitely important to music for sure. Way to reach out your comfort zone Rob! Nice
I wonder if there coukd be an ongoing series called, "Show Me Something" where you have a guest guitarist teach each other riffs from your catalogs. The only rule has to be that they are from a genre you don't play like nu-metal or jazz. First episode: Wes Borland could teach you some Limp Bizkit riffs and you could teach him some Chimaira riffs.
I like when you review these new computerized plugins. This is definitey a new world for me. However I would love to see you do a video over The Dino Cazeres Disruptor plugin. The sounds you can create are better than any other profiler I've ever heard. I think you'd be the perfect guitarist to use it. Best thing is you can take the presets and and add whatever you want.
Your setup is badass anyway, it's what makes your playing instantly recognizable "dude that's totally Rob Arnold". I was very impressed with your playing and hooked within a few bars when I first heard Chimaira. You're a legend in my book brother!!
With all of the wild effects you want to chain together notes which fit in a chord and progress as the notes you don't need in the next chord are fading out. You can have dissonance if you want but it's also a good idea to increase the echo to your tempo or reduce your tempo to the echo...
I had no idea about this, but now I will probably buy it haha. Cool to see you trying some stuff out of your wheelhouse. Even though you kept saying you didn't know what to do with the sounds, it still probably helped you in some way
I agree, there’s no recto in the tonality series and it’s one amp I would love to have I know plug-in format on tonality, Putney’s plug-in has a vh4 already
@@g.koch. still don't see why they couldn't include as Recto, or even an orange Rockerverb. If it's meant to cover all of his tones it's still missing some important stuff
I'm not a Limp Bizkit fan but I am a Wes Borland fan, he was one of my inspirations to play as a kid. Wes shouldn't be lumped in the "Nu Metal" genre alone because he has some gnarly side projects like Black Light Burns which is industrial rock/pro and Big Dumb Face which has some straight up thrash metal. Wes deserves some kudos.
Honestly, what I dig about this one as a metal head (though I still do love Nu-Metal) is exactly what you mentioned - it's not another 5150/6505/modern metal iteration. You can definitely get good chugs out of it, and no doubt it's got weird stuff too, cause it's Wes. But the gain section is kinda looser, kinda bigger, kinda thicker, and though it can be tightened up a bit, without the OD option in front of the amp, it's really left of center for the majority of metal-oriented plug-ins out there. It sits really nicely in a mix too right out of the gate, which I appreciate, and it's cool to see the version of that old Ibanez CF7 pedal in there. I had it way back in the day, and it was a blast messing with the Wack'd settings to get a ring mod out of it. But you're bang on - the presets are... odd. They feel like patches made for one specific thing in a song or two designed around that specific section rather than things you use in general. I think the NDSP Plini Archetype is still my desert island plug-in, but this one is a cool addition.
Massive thanks dude. I've always been a fan of Wes & wanted to get this to expand my palette but now know there isn't enough there that fits my thing to justify getting it. My neck is too crushed to work & I've lost so much because of uncool people like you.
Brush park demo should be the intro opening to a new Chimaira record. To live is to die sounded great. You gave all these alot more character and vibrance than you were lead to believe i feel. You can hear it in the playing.
Hey brother I noticed your subs are really climbing. I remember discovering your channel a few years ago and you were at less than 10k. Proud of how far youve come along. Keep up the great content, man. ☠️
@trevorphilips9484 I appreciate you bro! 👊 Your avatar has become one that I always recognize! For some reason, it always makes me think of Johnny Knoxville's character in Men in Black 2, where he's got that additional head on his shoulder! 🤘🤣
@@RobArnoldWorld hey do you remember touring with Demiricous and Byzantine, maybe 2004ish...those Byz boys are pals of mine. Played a lot of shows with them over the years.
@@RobArnoldWorld Thanks man. Great film, underrated character too, just like Edgar in the first one, the progression of his skin rotting throughout the first film was clever.
Great honest take on this. I dig Limp Bizkit, but Wes’s sounds are not my bag of tea either. I would be feeling the same as you. Some nice amp and effect options in here that I’m sure can be dialled to taste. To get a JC and VH4 in a suite is pretty dope. While those presets kill me (barf), I understand their intention with them. Cheers!
I can feel the difficulty playing with the preset with your experience. If I started playing with preset I couldn't stand it then say fu*k it I want to play some bolt thrower!
I use the will putney pack and I’ve never needed anything else. There’s at least a couple presets in there I can click and just start jamming. I think that’s really important for the creative process whatever the taste
You actually touched on EXACTLY what Zaxxon Cannon is used for…believe it might’ve been used in the song No Sex and others on the Significant Other album
Thanks Rob you just saved me $100 lol Wes is a great player for what he does but im like you i wouldnt know what to do with all that delayed spacey reverb'd experimental stuff.
I use STL plugins a lot but I noticed that what sucks about STL is the cabs... they all make the amps sound weird and digital, when I use external IRs my STL amps sound 10x better... I usually combine STL with the SpeakerMix Pro and all the amps come to life!!!
Weirdly, I find this to be a great review! Blind reacting to the suite shows that the tones may not be for everyone, but they are perfect if you're going for that niche sound
Well you could just have tried to dial in a little the diezel amp. You know, playing a little with the eq and gain. It's likely you could have found something usable for your riffage.
These are definitely the weirdest artist patches I've heard. Must be for very specific parts. Would be cool to hear Wes show what the patches are meant for. Also, would be cool to hear Rob dial in some more usable tones. The Roland is the Metallica clean tone amp. Diezel is great, the Wes heavy patches sounded pretty flubby, though.
@RobArnoldWorld Absolutely. Dave is my favorite Axe Slinger of all time. You are in my top 5 Brother. I love Chimaira. I've been with y'all since the beginning. I am hoping you guys are coming back to making new albums. When you left, Chimaira was never the same. I was devastated when Mark officially retired the band. I am so happy that you guys came back to do some shows. I couldn't go because I injured my back and had back surgery. Took me a couple of years to heal 100%. Just got my disability claim approved, so I am hoping you all have some more shows in the future. If so, you have to come to Dayton, Ohio. Of course I have to ask.....are there more shows and albums in the future? I also wanted to ask you about Six Feet Under. You played on the Undead album. I saw that when I bought the album. So when I found out Six Feet Under was coming to Dayton, Ohio, I was excited to meet you . But when I got to the show, I was buying some merch and asked the merch girl if you, Chris, and Kevin were going to meet the fans and doing autographs she said f**k Rob Arnold. What happened? Did you leave, or was you fired from the band? I know Chris is difficult to work with. Your work on that album is awesome.
@@jackweeks3887 I've talked quite a bit about my experience in Six Feet Under throughout my videos now over the years, but one specifically where I remember initially addressing things was in Everything You Love episode 02. Check it out! th-cam.com/video/qlf97eb5eg0/w-d-xo.html
Hello Rob. I really enjoy your content. I'm a guitar play and was highly influenced by chimera and have the same influence growing up. I've taken your advice on what audio interface and monitor setup and love it.
it's still Diezel VH4, regardless if Wes uses it or Hetfield uses it. whoever uses it doesn't matter. you have Diezel VH4 model on your hands. don't use stock presets, turn off all FX and start from scratch, just the bare amp, dial it up from there. since you are so metal, you should be able to make it sound metal AF, mister "I'm so death metal, I don't hang around with nu metal dudes" 😏

These aren’t tones I would use either but love stl tones. Every song I record usually has my Andy James stl tones in it
Wes is a great player. Theres some nice death metal riffage on the big dumb face record. Check out the song blood red head.
That Hot Dog clean was wild lol
Yo Rob, you should check out the band Big Dumb Face if you're not familiar. This was Wes and Scott's side project from back in 2001.
Rob Stop Capping!! You know all the riffs and listen to them constantly.
what are you playing @ 7:07? thanks!

@@RobArnoldWorld sounded familiar 🤘
Weirdly, I find this to be a great review! Blind reacting to the suite shows that the tones may not be for everyone, but they are perfect if you're going for that niche sound
I don't know how any of his riffs go either lol I just came for the content
What would you include if you were able to make your own STL Tonality or Neural DSP Archetype type suite of amps/cabs/pedals?
It would be boring! haha It would probably be just a couple 5150 sounding rhythm tones.
Oh man, kids got it easy. I had to buy a real jc120 and dual rec to get wes’s tone haha
Is there a feature to swap channels with a foot pedal with STL tones? Never dabbled in this realm before. Always stuck with an amp and pedal board
Mayyyyybe via midi control? But then that's a whole other can of worms you'd have to figure out how to open up.
@RobArnoldWorld have you ever thought about doing like a beginner walk through set up for STL Tones?
You need to be jamming LB albums man. They're better now than they were to me as a teenager discovering metal back in the day
His guitar sounds remind me of a kid just starting out with effects and using way too much of everything.
Some fun tones but way different to the chugging tones I chase!
I see you have been checking out Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction tablature 🤘🤘
One of the greatest albums ever!🤘
How does this man use so much delay?!
Hey Rob . 🤘
Tried it as well. It has a few really good sounds. You’re a good guitarist but you’re really strumming the wrong riffs for some of these settings. 😎
Can we get an "implements of destruction" walk through
Hello Rob. I really enjoy your content. I'm a guitar play and was highly influenced by chimera and have the same influence growing up. I've taken your advice on what audio interface and monitor setup and love it.
👊
Rob what metallica song was that u were playing? I went blank
The mighty To Live is To Die!
@@RobArnoldWorld please do a video of you jamming that beautiful song
@@dirtybeard70_Alivein85 Here you go! It was one of my very first videos! th-cam.com/video/9jCnYf4r_bk/w-d-xo.html
I just cried. FKN BEAUTIFUL
" I did it all for the plug-ins!"
Entertaining video. I like seeing you mess with unfamiliar tones.
my dude really just played house of the rising sun and smoke on the water to test out an amp sim. what year is it?
it's still Diezel VH4, regardless if Wes uses it or Hetfield uses it. whoever uses it doesn't matter. you have Diezel VH4 model on your hands. don't use stock presets, turn off all FX and start from scratch, just the bare amp, dial it up from there. since you are so metal, you should be able to make it sound metal AF, mister "I'm so death metal, I don't hang around with nu metal dudes" 😏
Listen to Chocolate Starfish and Hotdog album. As musician and just general music lover that album is cool
those sounds can be found in the stock podfarm 1 presets.....cheers........can we get a cover of Nookie? lol
