@@FrankypankyV8 hakuho has multiple surgeries and was out for 4 tournaments and then wins! Beating terunofuji in his prime to capture the basho. What do you mean?
No one is comparing Teru’s overall greatness to Hakuho’s. I think he had that potential years ago, but a lack of maturity cost him dearly. Laxer focus is one of the things that make men like Hakuho legendary. Hakuho’s “comeback” was as a Yoko which allowed him ample time off. He did not have to start at the bottom of sumo with two bad legs and climb back to the top. If you want to compare that to Teru then talk about Teru as a Yoko with knees that only got worse, a chip fracture in his hip and diabetes.
Nobody could have done more. After his disastrous knee injuries and fall to the bottom ranks, his unbelievable climb back up to Makunouchi, his progress to Ozeki and ultimately his promotion to the highest rank is unparallelled in world sport. We can all be thankfull for witnessing the career of such a gracious and worthy Grand Champion.
Amazing comment. Only recently got into sumo but was lucky enough to see Terunofuji live last Jan in Tokyo. I didn't know his history at the time but was amazed when I read what he had achieved and also realising the extent of the injuries and illness he's been carrying. Herculean feats from a true warrior.
He will be missed. When healthy, he was quite a formidable Yokozuna. I hope his health issues can be better managed. Best wishes to Teru in his retirement.
Let's give the big man his due. Greatest sumo comeback of all time. Double digit Basho on those knees, whilst dealing with diabetic issues. Kept the flame of Yokozuna alive as long as he physically could. And SO strong. Overwhelmingly so in his early Yokozuna days. True sumo willpower, and a man very worthy of our admiration and praise. Here's to you, Terunofuji.
He’s had a great career and was a great Yokozuna. When he was fit, I always felt that that Yokozuna presence watching his bouts. I will definitely miss him, as I don’t feel the same aura watching any other rikishi currently. I hope he can now work on his health and enjoy his life with his family. Thank you Teru, you’re a well deserved Dai-Yokozuna!
I’ve been following Terunofuji for years. My heart broke when his devastating injuries sent him all the way down the ranks, and I cheered as he came back and rose to Yokozuna. Thank you, Terunofuji, for inspiring us fans. And thank you, Chris, for being the best channel!
Without those injuries he may have never achieved Yoko. He was unfocused, partied too much, and his injuries changed all that. If only he had learned earlier.

Heart of a warrior. One of the greatest comeback stories in all of sports. He held on as long as he could, waiting for someone to step up to the rank. Wish you well Terunofuji!
End of an era. He got me into the sport back in July 2020. I went back and watched all tournaments from 2008 to present day, and I've never looked back (again...) youtube has since deleted all those video's, unfortunately. Thank you, Yokozuna! Man, he was awesome.
TerunoFuji was the first Yokozuna I got to see make it to that level. I watched him climb into Maegashira and back all the way to his epic fight with Hakuho. The kind of mental fortitude and sheer will it takes to go from top to bottom and back to the top is stunning. He truly embodied the spirit of Sumo, which is to always push forward with an unshakable foundation of Strength and Spirit
I have seen many Yokozuna in my 56 yrs of watching sumo. I could tell just how dynamic his sumo was compared to the other rikishi that he was going to make Yokozuna. He became a Dai- Yokozuna on my birthday. Terunofuji, will be deeply missed. I just want to go back a review all his matches just to get that thrill of seeing such amazing sumo again.
Really sad day. Teru is so special as a Yokozuna. Feels like he was also the last proper connection to a really great generation of Yokozuna, who have all now retired over the last decade or so. It really is a new generation. A new era. Pulling for Horshoryu even more in this tournament now!
The fact that he managed to secure the Yokozuna title with his great comeback is inspiring to say the least. Great wrestler with many feats. Hope he rests well on retirement.
The July ‘21 tournament was my first introduction to sumo. Even without any understanding of the sport, watching his final bout with Hakuho was intense. I’m glad to have witnessed his promotion to yokozuna and end to his rikishi career.
Very happy for his retirement announcement. Knee injury is something that you are reminded on each step, up and down stairs, standing up, squatting and even after walks. Couple that with diabetes and even getting up every day and training for long periods is a herculean tasks. Wishing him the best in training the future generations and a long deserved rest.
That's so true - top athletes like Teru often seem like indestructible supermen or the Greek heroe sof myth, but he's just a man at the end of the day and that stuff must just be horrendous to deal with. The fact he did it with such dignity is a huge credit to him. Only recently got into sumo but so happy I was able to see him fight in Japan last year, a real honour given this decision.
He will definitely be missed. What a story his career has been! To get to Ozeki, then to get injured, have to sit out until he dropped out of salaried ranks, then to come back and achieve Yokozuna is really amazing. Thanks for the memories, Terunofuji.
I'm both so sad to see Teru retire, but I'm also so happy he'll finally have a chance to get healthy. There aren't too many other wrestlers I know of that deserve as long a rest as Teru. One of, if not the greatest come back in professional sports in all of history.

Thank you Terunofuji for entertaining us for all these years. You are one of a kind! Much respect enjoy your retirement ❤
Teru is such a low-key guy that I think a video like this is a great way to commemorate him. I'm sure there was a sigh of relief and also sadness from his opponents.
So lucky to have watched the careers of Terunofuji and Hakuho unfold on TH-cam, two legends of modern sumo. Thanks Chris for sharing a glimpse of this world with us on TH-cam 🙏🏾
Teru is the epitome of a great Yokozuna. His storied career touched and inspired so many people and left an indelible mark on the sumo world. His courage, resilience and dignity despite all the adversity is truly admirable. Congratulations Teru on a remarkable career. We will miss you dearly. You have sacrificed so much and have nothing more to prove. Please take good care of yourself and we look forward to seeing you lead the next generation as coach and mentor.
Terunofuji is an amazing athlete . He has been a fine Yokozuna. The amount of adversity and set backs he faced and triumphed over is astounding . My sincere best wish to him in his future roles in Sumo
What made Terunofuji so great was his unprecedented rise from the lowest ranks to the pinnacle of sumo the rank of Yokozuna where he had dominated for the past four years. His ability to overcome several debilitating injuries and health problems, any single one which usually finishes others professionally, he used as motivation to work harder and become the best. He is truly a great example of "ganbatte" and an inspiration to everyone, not just sumo wrestlers.
Thank you Dai Yokozuna Terunofuji! Your story is one of triumph after great adversity. Your rise from the ashes of Jonidan to the mantle of Yokozuna is an inspiration to all of us and one of the great stories in all of sport around the world. May you flourish again in retirement, and may you train many strong rikishi as an Oyakata. どうも ありがとう ございます
His story gave me the drive I needed to continue through the hardest parts of my life. It is no exaggeration to say him and his story helped change my life for the better. His Sumo was what drew me into the sport as well. I like many knew the day would come when he would retire, with knees that hurt so much, its amazing he held out for so long, longer than he needed. It brings me to tears to know he's retiring but also joy and hope he will rest and recover to spend time with loved ones and pursue other things in life. Thank you Dai-Yokozuna Terunofuji. Truly my life was made better from the inspiration you gave me and many others.
To watch his debut and rise to Ozeki, his fall, and rise again, I was like "once in a lifetime" but he's going to the top. Thank you so much for all the coverage Chris, really. Can't wait to see your coverage of the next Yokozuna. Well done Teru. 💜😭
He was on a different level then everybody else, even when injured and sick. He's certainly earned some rest, and I'm sure he would make a great coach. Good luck Teru!
@@royaumeuni5730 Not the same level as Hakuho for sure. But then again, no one is... What I meant was in the last 4 years or so since he became Yokozuna and Hakuho retired. I loved Takakeisho, Hoshoryu looks great these last two tournaments, I have high hopes for Onosato and some other guys - but they are not yet on the level of even a (mildly) injured Teru, let alone a healthy Teru. But also that's just like my opinion man haha, I'm a sumo fan not a sumo expert :)
@@99shafan99 yes. One or another Yokozuna in history never really earned the title and later proved a real failure and not on the level (like Kisenosato for example), some did earn it all right but could not really keep up (many a Yokozuna with just ~3 titles). Teru, however, is above any doubt, a true Yokozuna of a prime caliber.
Thanks for all the years of excellent, textbook power yotsu-zumo, Terunofuji-zeki. Now, your second, and arguably the more important career begins. May you coach a pupil of yours to a yokozuna.
Since 2021 when I started to watch sumo, he has been the only one who always seemed unbeatable. I missed the hakuho era but I'm glad I was present for the terunofuji era.
Farewell good man, I'm glad I witnessed your sumo as it was some of my favorite. I became a sumo fan in 2019 so Teru will always be the 1st Yokozuna I watched make the ropes.
I searched the internet this morning, hoping NOT to see this. But I can understand his decision, as he has given so much to accomplish what he has done. I know that I will miss his presence in the dohyo, but I am thankful for his time in Sumo. He made the sport better. That is not something many rikishi have been able to do. I hope he enjoys his retirement, as much as I have watching him compete in the ring ...
His comeback to Ozeki and becoming Yokozuna have put him in sumo history. Thank you for the bouts Yokozuna Terunofuji! Goodbye and good luck in future endeavours!
I started watching Sumo from the September Tournament in 2022. I only got to see him fight about 60 bouts. But every time i got to see him, his presence was commanding. It's the end of an era.
I started watching Sumo the tournament after Hakuho retired and immediately fell in love with Teruno. I loved how he always looked so calm even when the bouts got tough. I think there was one time he did do the Hoshoryu stare at someone but he didnt look angry. It was more of a disciplinary stare. I knew that after his 10th win, he would retire any time. He seemed to struggle with mentioning any goals so i knew he wanted to retire.
Became a sumo fan last July 2023, coincidentally Teru’s last tournament championship. I wasn’t there to witness his peak but I was fortunate to get a glimpse of his greatness before he hung the ropes. Happy retirement to the great Yokozuna!
Reflecting on Yokozuna Terunofuji's journey, I am deeply moved by his resilience and determination. His story isn't just about sumo; it's a testament to the human spirit's capacity to overcome adversity. From battling severe injuries and health challenges to reclaiming the pinnacle of sumo wrestling, Terunofuji's path has been nothing short of inspirational. His struggles and triumphs resonate with me personally. Witnessing his perseverance through hardships, only to rise again and achieve greatness, serves as a powerful reminder that setbacks are merely setups for comebacks. Terunofuji's legacy will undoubtedly inspire millions, encouraging us all to face our challenges head-on and strive for excellence. Thank you, Yokozuna Terunofuji, for exemplifying courage and determination. Your journey has touched my heart and will continue to inspire countless others.
I got into sumo right around the time of Terunofuji’s comeback to Makuuchi post-injury. He quickly became my favorite wrestler. There was nothing more satisfying than watching him get a double armbar and knowing that the Kimedashi was coming. His composure, strength both mental and physical, and determination are things we should all aspire to. A giant of the sport, literally and metaphorically. He carried sumo when it needed a hero. I will miss him dearly.
Just watched the third day and thought "Man his knees must be hurting a lot. He can barely move forward." Against Kirishima he won by defensive moves and lifting from his upper back. He barely was able to keep his balance against Kirishima. I already predicted that he would quit the tournament after a few more fights. Seems like it took three more fights to fullfill that prediction. But quitting active sumo all together is even more incredible. I pretty sure that means that he is very sure that a new Yokozuna will rise very soon.
He's one of the goats. To come back from the bottom and return to the very top and in a dominant fashion, very few could do. Wishing him nothing but the best in his much deserved retirement.
Thanks Terunofuji. Words can't describe what he did over the last few years. I mean, Hakuho for sure is the goat but Terunofuji had the most incredible Journey Sumo will likely ever see. I'm sad to see him go but glad he'll finally be able to focus fully on his health and family.
I feel blessed to see him fight and win, his skill and dominance after his comeback is and will always be inspiring. Also all he did outside the Dohyo in the community and in the world of Sumo, Thank you for your amazing achievement and the example you have set for all of us regardless of our challenges in life.
He will leave a huge gap to be filled. He was a true warrior and Yokozuna. He truly was terrifying as an opponent. I hope Onosato can acquire such fierceness as Terunofuji was.
The final Hakuho Terunofuji match was easily the greatest match of sumo I've ever seen and I believe has a strong case for the greatest sumo match of all time. Seeing Teru's entire comeback since getting into sumo during the pandemic was stuff of legends, he has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

You've done enough, Teru. ;,(
What made Terunofuji so great was his unprecedented rise from the lowest ranks to the pinnacle of sumo the rank of Yokozuna where he had dominated for the past four years. His ability to overcome several debilitating injuries and health problems, any single one which usually finishes others professionally, he used as motivation to work harder and become the best. He is truly a great example of "ganbatte" and an inspiration to everyone, not just sumo wrestlers.
Thank you Terunofuji, you are a legendary yokozuna.
It was hard to see him like this, more bandage than man, glad he's come up with this resolution.
Don't exaggerate. He was good, but historically not at the same level as Hakuho or Asashoryu.
@ My ranking over time: 1. Hakuho 2. Taiho, 3 Chiyonofuji and 4. Asashoryu.
@@royaumeuni5730 of those I never saw Taiho, and Chiyonofuji only on youtube videos, but totally concur. Would add Takanohana to the list.
Endeavor to persevere !
You continue to demonstrate an indomitable spirit that touches us all!
Wow. Truly the end of, and beginning of a new sumo era. I will miss you Terunofuji!
He was a class act.
Became a sumo fan last July 2023, coincidentally Teru’s last tournament championship. I wasn’t there to witness his peak but I was fortunate to get a glimpse of his greatness before he hung the ropes. Happy retirement to the great Yokozuna!
Sad day to see the big man retire. But Teru has nothing to be ashamed of! He had the most amazing comeback . I hope he enjoys retirement!
There will always be a soft spot for Yokozuna Terunofuji.
I will miss his sumo.
Your journey has touched my heart and will continue to inspire countless others.
what an incredible champion. Made such a gigantic effort to be where he was and maintain the highest rank. incredible
Forget about records, just remain in people's hearts.. that's some legendary stuff.
Well played Sir Well played.
Congratulations are in order for Terunofuji on his spectacular career. Take a bow big man. Bravo 👏 👏 👏
3:49 is that guy just power squatting or am I not seeing the chair. Thank you, Teru!
I hope he can overcome his health issues, enjoy his family, his friends and a long and successful career as a respected coach.
Thank you, Terunofuji, for your amazing sumo, dignified spirit, and warm smile. A fan from 🇺🇸. ❤️😊❤️
Thanks!
Many thanks indeed. More on Terunofuji coming up.
