He suffered from Transverse Myelitis. You can recover from it but I guess it looks like he never really recovered 100%. If you see some videos of him the way he moves seems a bit unnatural, it can also come from drug abuse.
Something tells me he didn't completely "beat" the disease. He still looks very ill here and to be honest, his drumming is nowhere near his own standards, and not just because this isn't Slipknot. Noticed the past several years he was constantly wearing beanies/leather jackets, as if hiding something. I think the disease came back and he just kept it under the radar. Poor guy
he just looks like he has weight on him that his body isn't use to having. excess weight can slow you way down. & unless you r joey you can't say he wasn't playing up to his own standards, when he was asked in an interview he said he was back to playing with no issues. the extra weight could have had a lot to do with gis playing being "not up to standard" but honestly i think he sounds great, ppl just want or expect something inhuman.
@@passionoflovers In slipknot's live show in 2010-2011, before his hilness , he was already playing bad..something happened to joey something like 10 years ago. Seeing his drumcam videos in london 2002 is strange..it's like seeing a total different drummer. He really used to kick-ass and, don't get me wrong, he will always be considered a legend for evrything great he did for us metalheads...but now even jay weinberg is better than him..

Same stock metal fills and beats, and since then all he ever brought to the table has been simple 4/4 stuff and blast beats. Which is okay, nothing wrong with that, but I'm very curious how such a great drummer went to such a basic level of drumming. And again, don't blame it on his illness story, because according to himself he in far better shape than ever.
