    Hi Nathan, I am planning on replacing my Mazda 3, I am thinking about a BMW 5 series, it seems for around $11K I can find a couple 528, 523X and 530 with about 70K miles on. I feel comfortable with basic maintenance. What model would you recommend. I am also thinking about a Mercedes E-Class. Thank you, I am looking forward to your responds!

    Hi Nathan. I need a little help. I have an E39 (2003 530i). The car doesn’t overheat when idling, even after I let it run for a very long time. However, once I start driving, the temp gauge goes to red. As soon as you start idling, the temp gauge comes down. The engine seems to run fine, there is no smoke coming from the tailpipe, and the heat works. I have done a cylinder compression test, and they were all over 145 and the differences were within 15%.
    The car is not driven much. I do see white residue when I take the oil cap off. Could this possibly be blown head gasket?
    Thank you

    They sell an oversized time-sert for cases where someone had previously helicoiled their block. They call it a big-sert. I've pulled the head and manifolds together in a junkyard once before. Heavy but doable if you don't have back problems. The biggest problem with that, I've found, is that you have to twist and wrangle the head this way and that in order to get the manifolds to clear. And that's when the thing gets *really* heavy. If it was overheated again you should measure the head for warp and get it resurfaced at a machine shop.

      Just metal straight edged the head and its perfect, I have not ever had one warped but a lot of them crack, this one isn't cracked either, I gotta call that company on Monday that sells the bigger serts, might as well do them all again , because if not I don't see the others holding up long

    There is a shield above my exhaust manifold , and I can not see how it is attached at all. With it in , there is no way I am getting my bolts out. I do have a cherrypicker though. Can you just lift the complete assambly out with the maifold attached ?

    Hi Nathan
    Really enjoy your videos. I have a 2003 325ci and when the radio is on and you turn on the rear window defogger there is significant static on the radio. Any ideas
    Thanks John

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is weird, usually e46 has problems with the volume nob causing static, might want to pull the nob off and spray in there with wd40 and see if that helps, others might be the radio itself

    hi nathan i have i have a question. so i have a e36 93 325i 4door it ran perfect and i let it sit for a while and the battery died i was in a hury to turn the car on so i charged the battery halfway and crank it a few times but it was still to dead to start so i poured a small drip of gas on the air filter to give it a bump to turn over and start. it was almost turning on befor i did that and when i did that it made a pop sound and let off copresed air vapor/smoke from the intake. somthing came loose or broke it made a clanking noise. like a rod knock or broken/bent valve. i hope not what could it be?

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Johny3xtra could of blown the throttle body boot off, if it is a 96 or newer it could of blown the ccv and caused a big vacuum leak

    I've read more than a few comments around the web suggesting BMW engines in general have issues with pulling the threads in the block on head bolts. How much truth would you say there is to that?

    • @NathansBMWWorkshop
      @NathansBMWWorkshop  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of it is only the m52tu and the m54 engines and sometimes the 4.4l v8 after they have been overheated

  • @mikesavage8379
    @mikesavage8379 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    If it pulled the time-sert out when it overheated doesn't that mean the aluminum head is warped?

    I'm pulling the head on my 2004 530i. Did you have to loosen up the exhaust other than the manifold nuts? Cause I didn't think the head studs would clear the manifold without more movement from the exhaust.

    • @bigdeal87
      @bigdeal87 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ryanmckenna5254 so did you lose it on the 3 rectangle bolts? Otherwise there is no clearance with the studs on the head to take the cylinder head of right? Thanks

    • @ryanmckenna5254
      @ryanmckenna5254 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bigdeal87 honestly, if your engine is blown, you probably need a whole new engine. It's an aluminum block, once it overheats, the aluminum bolt threads are too brittle to withstand the head pressure. So just replaced the engine

    Hey Nathan. So I took apart my cylinder head and had all of my valve stem/push rods out of it and laid them all out neatly in order, on my garage floor. I was going to number them and poke them through cardboard like you did, but my retarded dog ran into my garage and knocked a bunch of them over. I set them back up in the order that I THINK they were in originally, but I'm not positive. I do know that DO have the exhaust and the intakes separated, but I'm not sure if they're all in the exact order that they were originally. Could I maybe test these to see if they seat correctly and then re-assemble and see what happens? Should I lightly lap them? I'm out of my mind upset right now. I spent so much time disassembling
    this car and I'll be devastated if this project is officially ruined because of this. If you could let me know what you think when you have the chance, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks- Earl

    My guess is that the aluminium from the block has weakened due to the overheatings.
    (Which would mean to fix it properly would require a donorblock)

    I've had soooo much bad luck with BMW's. Best solution if you have one? Get rid of it while it still runs good. They are over engineered and not reliable. Also, plastic component failure is rampant on these sh*t boxes. As a 35 year mechanic, take my advice. Stay away from BMW's, faaaar away.
