Played with dave in salem virginia.
    The softest nicest person alive.
Crazy league asked for crazy things from players.
    Dave was thrown into fighting.
He won almost all if not all because he had the longest reach.
    Still, a mild mannered gentleman.

I have nothing but admiration for Dave . I saw him play as a 4 years old when my dad took us to the Quebec Aces hockey games ! There was a rich tradition of hockey with this club and Dave was a perfect fit ! He was a really good player .

He was the last of the bad asses that could still play hockey. Although Bob Probert was the toughest guy in hockey. But that’s cool Dave you were a bad ass and I am from St. Louis.

His persona on the ice was different as I recall. He comes across in this interview as a articulate, and thoughtful individual, like most NHL enforcers ...

Actually, he played just 4 full seasons with the Flyers, 1972-76.

Dave Schultz to a surprise in his junior minor league hockey playing days was known to be much more of a very good goal scorer in skills than a fighter.

It was a grand time watching the Flyers during the 1970's. Great time to watch hockey, excitement from the first drop of the puck.

Goon hockey that created a 40 stigma in the NHL.
Glad the Canadiens came along, swept the Flyers en route to 5 straight Cups.
It helped erase the thuggery Shero's Flyers perpetuated.

A reality of survival in the NHL at the time or many would never have a career or ever be able to pick up a paycheck. I believe a lot of players are thankful the NHL was like that. Many said it gave them a future wife and family. They had no regrets and wouldn't trade the opportunity for anything else if they had to do it all over again in their life.

@@scottsears5545 He was also a coward, who only picked fight with guys who didn't fight (Rolfe), and he knew he could beat. He did beat up Gillies and Robinson by hitting their fists with his face, before he could pull hair, like a girl, and waiting for 3rd man in Dupont to save him, like with Gillies and Robinson, The flyer goons were only tough 2 or 3 on 1. What a farce, imo.
