    This is so beautiful and so cute. The thing with their tongues is that they are long enough to clean their own ear, to grab food and water as well. It's so cool!

    What a sweet baby! I love them! I remember bugging my parents until they took me to see the Okapi in San Diego. I was a horrid pest until we went. They are very shy, gentle creatures like the giraffes.

    The world needs more Okapi and more giraffe! I am glad zoos are breeding them where they can be safe from poachers and where they are cared for.

  • @cowgirlspirit1968
    @cowgirlspirit1968 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just read abour the Okapi conservation center in Congo Africa attacked by poachers last year, killing 6 people and 14 Okapi. Zoos are necessary, unfortunately. We would not have many of the animals in the world today if not for the breeding programs at the zoos. The Los Angeles zoo is expecting an Okapi calf this fall, I can't wait.

  • @Middlerun1
    @Middlerun1 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    vnninjas, youve got a soft heart for animals, but thats great too! but keeping them in zoos may be one of the last chances them, and the public to see them have.

  • @melc311
    @melc311 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    They nevever almost got extinct , we havent seen them so we called them extinct until someone saw some .

  • @Totorohat
    @Totorohat 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    They are listed ad threatened and have a population between 10,000 and 15,000... Still worn saving but by no means close to extinction.

  • @TRYCLOPS1
    @TRYCLOPS1 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @jescoool okapi is the closest relative to giraffes! It was thought extinct...

  • @celticsfanization
    @celticsfanization 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    They're more related to giraffes so that explains the long legs.

      Since when? The Okapi was never thought to be extinct by what I know. They are endangered though . . .

    • @korlumchukhu5483
      @korlumchukhu5483 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ashley Jones (Skipeople) check this out
      listosaur.com/science-a-technology/10-animals-once-thought-to-be-mythical-or-extinct/

    • @ashleyjones8058
      @ashleyjones8058 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      korlum chukhu They could be listed as thought to not exist/be mystical as they haven't been known long by science terms. According to IUCN, they were never listed as extinct nor does the Okapi conservation project. They are extinct in specific areas they once occupied, but that's about it.

    • @korlumchukhu5483
      @korlumchukhu5483 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ashley Jones (Skipeople) did u read the article properly and what was them listed for ??

    • @ashleyjones8058
      @ashleyjones8058 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      korlum chukhu It says they were thought to not exist -- it does not say they were thought to be extinct -- so that just proves my point lol Thanks, I guess?

    • @ghostmom1
      @ghostmom1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ty Cord Surprisingly, they're more closely related to giraffes than any other animal. Their head shape, neck structure, and long tongue more resemble a giraffe. They're the only living relatives to giraffes today.
