    United States Marine Corps Scout Sniper (MOS 0317, formerly 8541) is a secondary MOS (Military Occupational Specialty) designator of U.S. Marine Corps infantrymen and reconnaissance Marines that have graduated from a U.S. Marine Corps Scout Sniper School. Scout Snipers must earn the rank of Lance Corporal, be selected by their battalion to join the scout-sniper platoon, and complete an approved scout-sniper course in order to receive this designation.

    The Corps has come a long way in sniping training and tactics since my dad’s time in the Korean War. He said the platoon commander just selected him, as he was the best shot in the platoon, handed him a Springfield 1903 (the other guys in the platoon had the M-1 Garand)and told him to get to work marking targets with tracer rounds and killing any North Korean or Chinese soldiers he came across. There was no specific sniper training course back then (1952-53)

      my grandpa was always the best shot minus the armorer with an m1 carbine and Garand and they wanted him to be a sniper, but it required some more shooting and a bit more PT he said would take him away from the fam just that much more so he declined. Later he said he wished he had done it

This is just one part of their strength testing, you might as well make it a little easier on yourself and crank out a few more as opposed to using strictly your arms. Besides, in a combat scenario you're not going to use just your arms because its a better arm workout lmao, or at least, i hope you wouldn't

    • @silverspringhamir2478
      @silverspringhamir2478 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Zachary Maneja - No it's not cheating yourself as much as it's elongating your success. Like Seal Training, the goal is to get through the Indoc -- as some Marines will tell you "slow is fast and fast is slow."
      Whereas, to answer your question theoretically speaking? Yes! You "can go hard." However, you'll be more prone to injury (down the road) versus completing your training. And I am telling you from first hand experience -- as my body dropped out due to a stress fracture from overexerting himself. Grant it he had a huge heart and was highly motivated! However, he forgot patinece is the reason why we're in the Indoc. To be a sniper in the Marine Corps, is about patience.
      P.S. Think of it like this. If I tell you to find a spot, and lay dormant for several days -- at a time -- before pulling the trigger to engage your target, would you do that? Or, would you simply rush everything and potentially compromise the mission (including your life)?

    When I was a freshman in high school my football coach asked our local recruiters to come out and get us in shape. It was a long rough day. We showed up at 6:30 in the morning with a 1 mile warm up then proceeded to press ammo cans they brought out then a course where you a have a buddy finally we finished up with three 300 dashes timed under 55 seconds if you failed to meet time then it was bleachers.

They use outdated and retired British Harriers they brought on the cheap, they have the lowest budget out of all the US military branches, they have the worst accommodation. They literally have fuck all, yet, they're relied on to do everything. First ones to go into battle, don't have the best equipment.

      That's how it's always been, It all goes back to the marine corps budget being apart of the navy's meaning the navy decides what the marines budget is the marines can request for an increase but often falls on deaf ears. Thus the marine corps is also the most cost efficient yet there are still big cuts to there buget. That was also a big reason for MARSOC being formed since they get funding from USSOCOM. But all together the marines work with what they got and still perform extremely well.

    Every Marine is a marksman, any one of them can hit a target with an M16 up to 500 yards, and then there's the scouts who are even better shooters. Probably the best snipers you'll ever meet, only about 300 of them out of 200,000 Marines but quality vs quantity.

    • @bigdee8189
      @bigdee8189 ปีที่แล้ว

      No...every marine is a RIFLEMAN, not necessarily a marksman! Who cares if a supply clerk or personnel clerk is a marksman!! They're never see combat, unless it's WW3!! IF that happens, EVERY member of the military will pick up an M-16!

    To even consider sniper school, you have to be an outstanding marine, minimum Lcpl. avg. cutting score of 4.5 or higher, rifle expert, above WS-1 swim qual, then your platoon leaders select you, and onto the battalion endoc where you compete with other marines trying for the quota. This is the hardest school next to DI school, I believe. There is no merit badge for snipers, that can be worn on your uniform like jump wings or bubbles. You get unique lifelong scar on your calf, so the next time you see a guy walk around with SS on his calf, then honor him. People who run long distance track and field and do moderateweigh training in High School are more likely to get pass the physical part, but it is not all book smart either, you have to be an independent individual who is self discipline in all of you life. Most of you by 11th grade have figured out that you want to join the Marines, there is a lot more to the Marine Corps with all of it's occupation, train hard now, once you get to the fleet keep training and those quotas will be available then it is up to you: Jump School, RASP, Pathfinder, Sniper, Combat Diver, Recon, Force Recon, ANGLICO, FAST, etc. Earn you brass and I am not talking butter bars. GL!

    How things have changed. Back in 1968 the Marine Corps trained some of their snipers at an Engineer Bn. just north west of 1stMarDiv HQ. right outside of DaNang. I remember borrowing a mighty mite from a friend at motor T to give someone in my squad a ride to the school. I hated to lose him to snipers but he wanted to do it. Never did find out what happened to him but we didn't get a replacement for him before Tet hit. Much nicer to send fully trained and qualified Marines into a combat zone ready to go instead of that half-ass shit back then. Semper Fi my brothers. Sergeant USMC 0311.

    I served (along with a few others) in fulfilling our company Scout billit. After 3 years ( 9 1/2 mo. Activated), I, and several other members of my team, contracted Trench Foot after a 13 1/2 week in field operation that was only supposed to take 96 hours. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't think of our beloved Corps. Any any other Dogs out there? Over...

    Wow. It's changed since my time. The entry test was, first you had to be at least rifle marksman, then you had a time frame to complete a 3 mile run with a 40 pound pack, a two mile ocean swim (one out, one back with a "flotation" pack) and another 2 miles run, then a land navigation in day and night. Then you could start the "fun stuff" and there was no guarantee of being a shooter.
    It was the swim that changed my mind. Turned out not to matter though because I sustained an injury in boot that didn't fully manifest until infantry school that prevented me from continuing my career in the Corps. I often wish I could go back to boot and avoid the incident that caused my injury. Now my son is about to ship out to boot and that is really making me miss being in. To bad time travel isn't real.

    Driving out to Stone Bay one morning at 4 am from main side Lejeune for rifle qual I'm 25 minutes from New River 20 minutes to the gate at Stone Bay in the middle of darkness I catch movement in the tree line out of the side of my headlights. Scout sniper running with a map in his hand going to what I presume is the next navigation box during a timed evolution. I'm 20 minutes from anything at 60 mph in the dark. Scout snipers are a special breed. And by special I mean crazy. Humble dudes too every one I ran into, only way I knew they were in the course is they didn't have name tapes.
    I love TH-cam. One minute I'm watching Jacques Pepin make a classic french omelette, the next I'm watching scout snipers.

    • @johnlucero3321
      @johnlucero3321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake it’s a little late but being a Scout Sniper isn’t something you can contract into right away so yes you have to go through Recon or become a Raider and it all really depends which route you choose to go but without going through those you won’t find yourself becoming a Scout Sniper until passing that. I’m currently in the DEP and I’m going in as a Combat Engineer next year July 22nd but I’m aiming to be a Scout Sniper so I looked into it a little bit. Anyone can try out for Raiders and Recon but very few make it so if you’re thinking of going I’d say think of a fallback job (mine being Combat Engineer) that you’ll still enjoy when you serve.
