To be fair I have seen Patrick Frostmourne (esp Asmon's reactions on the complete series) so many times that when the original cinematic begun, as soon as the cliff scene showed up I was like "where's the burger joint oO" :D
As a WCIII fan that came into playing WoW as it was born, TBC and WotLK were story caps. I think the hype behind TBC and WotLK are based enormously on this. And I agree. Story is king.
As a child when i was on vacation and i had no internet i watched every day the cinematics on the log in screen and counted the days before i could get back online.
As a Warcraft lore knower/reader, having to defeat imprisoned Magtheridon -> Lady Vashj and her army in their underwater layer -> Kael'thas and his army in their nether floating castle -> relive RoC last mission in 3rd person (Battle for mount hyjal) -> Siege Illidan with Akama and the broken on top of Magtheridon's black temple -> Prevent Kiljaiden from coming through the same type of portal that sundered Azshara and created the Maelstrom... TBC #1
I was working in a gaming store when Wrath of the Lichking released. We got promotional material ahead of time, including a cd with the trailer. We put it on loop in a viewing corner of the store. Chills throughout the day until the midnight launch. People were so hyped. Burning Crusade and Wrath are excellent expansions. I think you would enjoy both, and especially Wrath, as it brings a satisfying conclusion to the end of The Frozen Throne. You can actually experience them on non-hardcore Classic Cataclysm servers, or, if you don't mind outleveling content to experience it at your own leisure to soak in the environments, ambience and content, consider creating and playing a casual retail character.
Oh, my first first. =) And yes, they were both amazing, specially as a Warcraft 3 player. The only one that comes close is probably Warlords of Draenor, which is also a massive nostalgia wink to Reign of Chaos.
I see your WoD nostalgia but due to ...reasons.... (*cough*DaddyIllidan*cough*) I am kinda impartial towards Legion - basically the ingame cinematics more than the opening.
I was there Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago... In all seriousness tho, for a WoW / W3 fan, these intros really were sick. On top of that the graphics were top notch, back in the days when these rendered videos were still not the norm they later became. Producing these was not cheap and Blizzard was regarded as among the utter handful of best studios when it came to producing these. "You are not prepared" became a catchphrase for a reason. And then WotLK came. The music... still getting chills to this day.
Remembering seeing all the pre-release for TBC for the first time, how *mind blowing* the Draenei were as a reveal: We'd seen these creatures before, but only as the Eredar, the big bad guys, Archimonde, Kil'Jaeden, and the Draenei were these kinda pathetic bean-people who show up in Frozen Throne helping Illidan. To connect the two, to have them appear as an ALLIANCE race, and primarily as Paladins, light-wielders, was such a sudden dissonance and reversal of everything we expected.
"An karanir thanagor, mor ak angalor. Mor ok garum pala'ahm, ravali ahm." First time I heard that music I went and looked up the words and memorized them. Once the entire lyrics were published after the Invincible video(s) came out, I learned those too.
To my memory this is not only my favourite expansion in wow but this is where I had the greatest gaming experience of all time even though I played mostly on private servers, the greatest back in the day 2006-2012. ❤
When TBC launched, there was a male blood elf running around the starting zone /yelling FABIO!! He was there for HOURS WotLK was insanely exciting as a WC3 player. It's still largely the most played private server expansion and has been since release
I remember the TBC trailer had me fairly excited yes but more so because we were getting an expansion. The whole idea of an expansion was to me until this point wholly new, so it was the first time I experienced something like this. They were gorgeous but ofc Illidan was what got me go wooooow. That being said. The WotLK trailer is just, one of the best game trailers made to this day. Seeing THAT for the first time had me incredibly hyped. I was quite impressed how well they managed to model Artahs in the game itself.
TBC trailer release was amazing. AND we got flying... still remember seeing the first flying mounts overhead. Was just incredible. New land. Everyone went to quest for the portal. So good. Then it opened into the massive open area. Gah. Childhood.
Such an amazing nerd smile. It makes me miss standing in a queue at midnight outside the gaming store waiting for release, with everyone else who had called in sick next day.
Seriously Grubby, with how close you got to 60 with your mage i would highly recommend moving him to the other realm and progressing through the content when it releases. Icecrown Citadel (ICC) was an amazing raid. all the content was so good :)
We stood in line outside of GameStop at midnight to get our preordered copies and then raced home to install them and then finally login for this. I loved the game back then
Grubby, they are not the expansion trailers per se but check out the Warbringers short stories connected to Battle for Azeroth. The Azshara one is stunningly good. Looove the art direction and style.
Yes it was amazing. And facing Lady Vashj, Kael'thas and Illidan the first time. Good old days. Now I'm too old for playing WoW with the intensity I played it before :)
I only really played during the very beginning, and then far more intensely during wotlk. Which I love and loved. Been fun watching you play! Edit - wow the way seeing northrend still tugs at my guts. Unreal. That hook is so damn strong lol. I loved those zones.
By the time the cinematic was released, they had already announced Blood Elves & Draenei as playable races. They waited a while to announce Draenei… for April Fools that year they announced the new Alliance race would be Wisps. Their racial was Self-Destruct and there was a death screenshot with “reroll character” replacing “release spirit”
Yes We knew about the new races The first trailers, announcement trailers, show all the new stuff coming with the expansion. These were the cinematic trailers
While Grubby has a little less context, he should definitely watch the raid release trailers for Black Temple (Illidan) and Icecrown Citadel (Arthas). Those trailers are GOATed, and as a Warcraft 3 fan I reckon he might appreciate them a lot more than most people.
Those trailer were very exciting. Both Illidan and the Lich King were the characters from W3 games we all new, and the expansions felt like continuation of the story after the Frozen Throne.
I mained a human mage in vanilla (and beta). The moment I saw the draenei for the first time, I knew I would switch - and never looked back, until I quit in Cataclysm. You choosing to play WoW actually made me log into the game for the first time in all these years and 😅once again, I find myself enjoying my good old space goat :)
I saw someone in chat say (about WotLK being people's fav xpac) that it didn't age well. There is a reason WotLK pservers are the ones that have most playerbase and are still standing The problem with Classic Wrath (and TBC) is Blizzard adding level boost
The broken ones that you find in wc3 are the unfortunate draenei that didnt get to ride the luxury ship Exodar to flee Outland and then crash land on Azeroth
Maybe it's my bias in understanding everything that went on, but I think the WotLK trailer is probably the best video game cinematic trailer of all time.
Imagine my excitement when I heard an expansion to my favorite game, WC3, had released. Imagine that same excitement, when, as a child, I went with my mom to the game store to buy WC3: TBC, only to find out it was for WORLD of Warcraft. Reading comprehension wasn’t a strong point for me, back in the day.
I'm gonna say it's neck and neck with Legion. And now TWW is in it's own class with realism that faked out literally MILLIONS of people -who thought Anduin wasa literal actor in a physical environment. It took Thrall appearing and moving closer to start breaking through that. Given that BLizzard did use Josh Keaton's likeness (but not Motion capture) to create the Anduin for TWW cinematic [enough so that I, someone who has spent a decent amount of time on stream with Josh, with a closeup, recognized the EYES immediately]. I was screaming at my monitor "OMG its JOSH!". And of course Josh's general face with his voice was just insane. They have set one helluva bar for the MIDNIGHT cinematic to say the least.
TO BE FAIR, the Night King didnt raise a previously dead dragon.. he pulled something akin to what Xavius did against Ysera. Now, check the timing closely for when the episode with THAT in it, versus when Legion was beta testing and the scene in Val'sharah was revealed.
You could say TBC is the absolute height of the player base growth *rate*, partly I believe the illusion of level creeping is first introduced and mildly affecting. Unlike Wotlk, which all previous items power are squashed into non-existence. Which is uncool. 17 years later, you could make an argument, if wow should operates just solely based on level 60, at all.
by the end of Dragonflight we would have been level 120 without the level squish. ANd of course we got the item level squish before BFA, and even earlier on still was the simple numbers squish to bring damage numbers back down out of the millions and billions. Can you imagine the numbers necessary now if we hadnt adjusted? We'd be up in the qunitillion rage! LOL And iLevel would be like 3000 or something insane.
@ZakhadWOW yea. but the playerbase dwindles regardless. Borrowed power or power squash isn't really a good choice for long term emotional investment. instead of linear progression, i personally prefer side progression. But it would be more like TF2 at that point, everything is a side grade and no personal progression to make.
I dont post on videos often but Grubby you need to make an alt on one of the non HC servers and play through the classic endgame content before TBC comes out
What bothers me, is that how fucking GOOD it still looks EVEN now. Excuse me? It's been over 10 years. Shouldn't we get better not worse? The effects, the music, the timing. Blizzard were on top of their game with cinematics.
I always felt like Tbc is one of weaker ones as its more like "feature showcase" mixed with very little story, Illidan had huge potential for very badass story focused cinematic. Wotlk one is pure cinema tho, one of the best. Also while Cata one is too up high there, if you can, i recommend you Wod one, it have that old school warcraft vibe mixed with wow storytelling (btw, as you are w3 veteran, i bet you would recognize references to w3 heritage in it :D), sitting at top with wotlk one. Also you are right with wotlk being one of the most beloved for many. Tbc is fan favourite too, but wotlk was more polished and i think it spoke to much bigger audience... but, many tbc purists dont like it as much as it introduces some "quality of life" improvements that they consider as start of making game too easy (while i personally like them, i have to agree with it, wotlk started to be much less grindy and "hard" game as vanilla or even tbc, and end content started to be more important than road there).
Captain Grim Machinima vides would be nice to watch. But I don't know if you would want to see those. You can watch his machinima videos about Wow classic stuff. 🙂
bro's discovering 2007
fr lol
Ancient astronaut theorists say yes
Wasn't it 2006 for tBC and 2008 for WotLK actually?
and im here for it
I'm sure he's seen them before, he was lip syncing along for both trailers, but he said he watched them now (again) after playing classic.
Grubby wouldn't recognise the Priest's Resurrection spell in WoW because he's only played Hard-core, lol.
LOOOOOL
So you don't have to train this spell. Ez money safe and earlier mount.
hardcore*
I'll be sure to update my auto correct
Illidan : ‘’You are not prepared!’’
Me: ´´He said the thing, he said the thing!’´
"Patrick that's the Ashbringer - Director's cut" and "Patrick that's Frostmourne - Director's cut" next:?
YESPLEASE
MUST
you forgot Patrick The Pure - The Sacrifice - Director's cut
To be fair I have seen Patrick Frostmourne (esp Asmon's reactions on the complete series) so many times that when the original cinematic begun, as soon as the cliff scene showed up I was like "where's the burger joint oO" :D
That scene of the warlock annihilating the murlocs so nonchalantly is why i still main warlock today 😅😅
Gonna be honest I always thought it was a mage casting blast wave lol
@@wwc222 yeah i think its supposed to be hellfire as an ability but looks more like blast wave
Same here man! Long live the Banshee Queen! :D
As a WCIII fan that came into playing WoW as it was born, TBC and WotLK were story caps.
I think the hype behind TBC and WotLK are based enormously on this. And I agree.
Story is king.
exactly, was the same for me and still is
wotlk definitely was the end of the wc3 chapter of wow
I think TBC was the perfect era and it didnt even need to expand
As a child when i was on vacation and i had no internet i watched every day the cinematics on the log in screen and counted the days before i could get back online.
My favorite version of WoW is TBC, but the favorite intro cinematic is without a doubt Wrath. It's just so incredibly good.
100%
Funny part is that Wrath cinematic is made like in 2007 or so and it just looks so damn good. Just by comparing to other stuff made in same years.
TBC sucks so bad
As a Warcraft lore knower/reader, having to defeat imprisoned Magtheridon -> Lady Vashj and her army in their underwater layer -> Kael'thas and his army in their nether floating castle -> relive RoC last mission in 3rd person (Battle for mount hyjal) -> Siege Illidan with Akama and the broken on top of Magtheridon's black temple -> Prevent Kiljaiden from coming through the same type of portal that sundered Azshara and created the Maelstrom... TBC #1
The canon event of reinstalling the game with all 10 disks and rewatching the trailers
"You are not Pre-Paid !!" - Blizzard Entertainment 2024
LMAO
I pre-ordered vanilla, TBC, and WOTLK back in the day, that ain’t even remotely modern lmao
haha so funny anyways when did they introduce cash shop ah right WotLK the "GrReAteDSt eXPaNSioN"
back in the day when TBC came out when we were kids on the internet was illidan holding a turkey saying "YOU ARE NOT PREPARED"
I was working in a gaming store when Wrath of the Lichking released. We got promotional material ahead of time, including a cd with the trailer. We put it on loop in a viewing corner of the store. Chills throughout the day until the midnight launch. People were so hyped.

Grubby should see the Wrathgate cinematic.
That shit in 2007 was absolute gas 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I was also coming in here to say the wrathgate is one of the best cinematics and still holds up so well.
The Wrath teaser reveal trailer was my favorite. "Young heroes, I was once like you..."
It's also where the phrase One True King (OTK) comes from
wrath is the best, the intro with sindragosa being ressed is insane. :D
Can’t wait for him to watch the later cinematics, wod/mop ones have such a special place in my heart
I was there Gandalf, I was there 3000 years ago... In all seriousness tho, for a WoW / W3 fan, these intros really were sick. On top of that the graphics were top notch, back in the days when these rendered videos were still not the norm they later became. And then WotLK came. The music... still getting chills to this day.
It was an amazing time. I went to Best Buy for tbc at launch with my mom and brother who both played with me. I’ll never forget it
Remembering seeing all the pre-release for TBC for the first time, how *mind blowing* the Draenei were as a reveal:
We'd seen these creatures before, but only as the Eredar, the big bad guys, Archimonde, Kil'Jaeden, and the Draenei were these kinda pathetic bean-people who show up in Frozen Throne helping Illidan.

Grubbing is taking the last lost Crusaders of WC3 and bringing them into the Dark Portal with the rest of us... Poetic if you stop to consider it.
Seriously Grubby, with how close you got to 60 with your mage i would highly recommend moving him to the other realm and progressing through the content when it releases. Icecrown Citadel (ICC) was an amazing raid. all the content was so good :)

Imprisoned for 10.000 potatoes...
Banished from my own potatoes...
And now... you dare potato potato potato?
You are not potato...
Wrath cinematic is the best game cinematic ever made. These visuals, lore, music, voice acting, cinematography together are unbeatable!
Every single time I hear the music for Arthas and speech I tear up lol. It will always happen
wotlk trailer will never be topped by anything, its perfect
i love the paradox it creates between what actually happened and his fathers words
Wotlk one still gets me like the first time.
I only really played during the very beginning, and then far more intensely during wotlk. Which I love and loved.
Been fun watching you play!

God I miss those days. I wish I knew then what I know now. Coming back to WoW after so many years not playing I missed so much.
You have NO IDEA how hype this was.
Yes
We knew about the new races
The first trailers, announcement trailers, show all the new stuff coming with the expansion.
These were the cinematic trailers

I'm glad I dropped wow at lvl 9 in 2006. I never would have stopped. Maplestory and other bs I played however had the good grace to get old.
Those trailer were very exciting. Both Illidan and the Lich King were the characters from W3 games we all new, and the expansions felt like continuation of the story after the Frozen Throne.
u have to watch them all!! wow is still awsome and the cinematics for every xpac is just wow
Grubby should see the patch / raid trailers as well at some point!
The pitlord was still alive in Burning Crusade, kept alive so Illidan could maintain a supply of fel orcs.
God that Wrath cinematic is so good.
Grubby, you gotta watch hurricane's trailers, they are so well made that the blizzard ended up hiring the guy
Definetly watch the "Black tempel" raid cinematic from TBC! Its awsome
I saw someone in chat say (about WotLK being people's fav xpac) that it didn't age well.
There is a reason WotLK pservers are the ones that have most playerbase and are still standing
The problem with Classic Wrath (and TBC) is Blizzard adding level boost
Wotlk Trailer was the only reason I started WoW back then. I wanted to know what happens to Arthas. Still my favorite expansion, mostly due to PvP.
Dude!!!!!!! 1000%!
Back in the day seeing gathered was legendary!!!
*They were their audience! Which made the whole diff^^
Was 12 years old going my first midnight release for a video game. :)❤
All they gotta do is make WoW movies with this animation... instant W
The broken ones that you find in wc3 are the unfortunate draenei that didnt get to ride the luxury ship Exodar to flee Outland and then crash land on Azeroth
Our guild in TBC vanilla always said *YOU ARE NOT (P)REPAIRED* 😅
you gotta watch more cinematics theyre all amazing
Maybe it's my bias in understanding everything that went on, but I think the WotLK trailer is probably the best video game cinematic trailer of all time.
Battle for Azeroth trailer was amazing
Imagine my excitement when I heard an expansion to my favorite game, WC3, had released. Imagine that same excitement, when, as a child, I went with my mom to the game store to buy WC3: TBC, only to find out it was for WORLD of Warcraft. Reading comprehension wasn’t a strong point for me, back in the day.
wotlk trailer is the goat, I still get chills watching it now
5:49 Thank you! Been saying it for years
burning crusade was when i rly started to play ... bloodelf paladin for life xD
Im curious if Grubby knows how Blizzard continued Ilidan's story in Wow Legion
It was cool back in the day, but Cataclysm intro is still my favorite.
Id also recommended some of the patch trailers, a lot of the TBC and Wrath ones are great.
looking forward for the WoD Opening ... its the best of all opening Cinematics
This guy is so genuinely likeable
This is a fucking vibe. I’m 100% on board
Can't wait for TBC fresh! I missed it last time it came out.
The wrath cinematic is the best video game trailer of all time
I'm gonna say it's neck and neck with Legion.
5:51 funny how you can tell already before the scene at the end where they copy paste it
Someone has shown this man the death of the lich king?
goosebumps. every, single, time.
Another cool cinematics / short films are from Overwatch.
Especially the one with Hanzo and Genji
Yes. Game of Thrones ripped this off so hard that it actually completely broke my story immersion as I stood up yelling "WTF RIPOFF"
TO BE FAIR, the Night King didnt raise a previously dead dragon.. he pulled something akin to what Xavius did against Ysera. Now, check the timing closely for when the episode with THAT in it, versus when Legion was beta testing and the scene in Val'sharah was revealed.
It was, it really was.
"BEFORE Activision"🎉 yea it was something special
Wrath is so good, really feels like Warcraft 3-3
bro looks like he drank flourided water without the water.
Now you need shadowlands cinematics . LK fight :)
now THIS is a youtube video
I dont post on videos often but Grubby you need to make an alt on one of the non HC servers and play through the classic endgame content before TBC comes out
Hurrcian made great trailers that look like what the game felt like, maybe check them out some time too? :)
What bothers me, is that how fucking GOOD it still looks EVEN now. Excuse me? It's been over 10 years. Shouldn't we get better not worse?
The effects, the music, the timing. Blizzard were on top of their game with cinematics.
Oh man the nostalgia 😊
Wish he would react to Fall of the Lich King Ending cinematic too
Long live to the true, Lich King!!!
Yes. Yes it was.
Story is King!
If you start a toon on the non HC anniversary realms they prog into TBC next year, come join us :)
Death Knight were 100% OP first few months of wrath... All 3 specs were winners

Grubby, you need to watch with us all of them, Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, all, and the cinematics made by Hurricane
been here since start and it is still the best game ever
Captain Grim Machinima vides would be nice to watch. But I don't know if you would want to see those. You can watch his machinima videos about Wow classic stuff. 🙂
