I worked with a woman from England. She told me a story of her Grandmother & Mother surviving the Blitz in London with a closet full of Collected Wedge-wood china. They had saved the china for “special occasions “. After the Blitz, she said if her family wasn’t “special” enough then nothing/no one would be. They ate off that china the rest of their lives. May you be similarly blessed.
You have inspired me to unwrap the Spode China , that I loved, passed along to me from my grandmother when she passed. I am 73 and none of my cnildren are interested in having it. What they want is contemporary. Tomorrow, I will be using it every day, enjyong it and if I break a piece, oh well, at least I will enjoy using it and not worry what happens to it when im gone. Hi Michael, Nice collection ❤ The saucers will be for the tea cups as well as the two Handled soup coupes / cups. The serving tuareens will be for open vegetable dishes or covered veg. The platters largest turkey, mid size Beef, small chicken. Smallest platters5will be for cold meats. The various size jugs are for Cream-smallest Milk larger & largest is a pitcher water/ juice etc. The pot with bamboo handle is used for tea storage or as you say a cookie jar is more practical. The other large liddes jar is what is known as a Cache pot which is a general storage pot. The large flat bowls are called soup plates, the medium rimless bowls are breakfast bowls - porridge / cereal. The small rimless bowls are dessert plate bowls. The very shallow flatish bowls are Victorian tea slippers for cooling tea. These would of been used by elderly people or young children that may not have had a steady hand. The two handled edge plates are called bread and butter plates for afternoon tea. The thick edge pots are for celery / cucumber sticks the can be refrigerated before use to keep the vegetables from wilting. The Victoria's would of used ice. Probably to accompany the cheese course. Best “haul” or unboxing video ever. After reading a bunch of comments I just want to agree with using the best everyday. After I lost my first husband and remarried, I realized how important it is to use your best all the t8me. Make everyday be a special day. My second husband’s wife had saved all sorts of beautiful things to use in the new house they were building. She never got to use them as she was diagnosed with stage four cancer and died shortly thereafter. It was a treat to see you unbox all the goodies. You should document your purchase and let us know about the rare pieces. It would be so fun to know the names of the odd pieces and their uses!
I’m watching this with delight. The stack of “bowls” with wide lips are what we would consider dessert plates. I’m so jealous of the warming bowl. I LOVE Spode, especially blue & white. I was in awe and rapture watching this. I can’t justify buying Spode in New Zealand. I lost quite a bit of stuff in the last swarm of earthquakes we had and one was a beautiful little Spode vase. I actually cried. I was watching you put stuff on shelves and thinking “ nooooo, blutac that down! Put that in the cupboard! I have my modern Wedgewood in felt in firmly closing bottom cupboards of my dresser. By the way £600 was an absolute BARGAIN for those, but they did go to a good home.
Im also from NZ and my first thought was the same, because I lost a lovely collection of china to earthquakes in the Manawatu years back, I opened the cupboard and out it all fell, I too cried, totally irreplaceable
As you get a little older remember-all these beautiful “antiques “ shouldn’t be hidden away and maybe never used. Treat yourself! Set a beautiful table with a linen cloth and your best dishes and cutlery. Have a feast! ❤
What an absolute joy to watch. A dear friend from New Jersey passed a few years ago and I wound up with his families Wedgewood China, place settings for 40. Even had a little cigarette case! I use it every day and enjoy it.
To me this is God's generosity at work. With a leap of faith on your part, the cooperation of your friend, and 600 pounds, the value has multiplied many times over. That kitchen is the right place for such a collection. Well done Michael!

Someone's collection of a lifetime has found the perfect home with the Pethericks where it will be loved and used. Congratulations on this brilliant purchase! I think the little pickle dish and the three handled toasting mug are my favorites. The little tiny teapot may be from a child's tea set.
Can you imagine especially since Covid how people react to drinking out of that same vessel? People are so germ phobic today. They don’t realize that to develop an immunity to germs. You have to expose yourself to that in the first place.😮

The smallest bowls are “berry bowls”. The plates with the groves are for juicy meats so that when you slice them the juice doesn’t fill the plate. I love anything blue and white, always makes me smile! So, congratulations on your new treasures! What fun to use them in future meals and celebrations!

Michael!!!! The BIG tea cup is a breakfast cup……and the small tea pot is a single serve …..I’ve got three or four to have a cup with my lunch…..I DEFINITELY do NOT throw tea bags in my mug!!!!! And can I say, as an INSANE China collector, I’m GREEN WITH ENVY at your Spode……I don’t have a Spode pattern…..YET !!!!! You should have 5 sizes of platters: the biggest is usually goose, next down is turkey, then a duck, then chicken and finally squab…….

Forgot to say, you came across a once in a lifetime haul of 100 year old Spode! Called being at the right place at the right time! I too love Spode. I have a medium size pitcher (new) and 4 new salad/sandwich plates, a set of 4 coffee mugs of different patterns also new. I thrifted some antique tea cups with saucers and then through Etsy found 2 more matching. So you are so blessed to have such a beautiful and large collection. Small dish with handle: My grandmother had one. She would place a large spoon in it after stirring soup, vegetables- anything boiled. USE this stuff as often as possible. Life is short. What a deal you got!

Michael, the set of 4 plates with the ridges are Sandwich Plates from the 1940's. It was destiny that this beautiful collection of Spode found its way to you, a worthy custodian. Your delight in unveiling the collection was wonderful to watch. Looking forward to seeing the lavish dinner party you throw to use this beautiful set.
I’m an archaeologist who specialises in historic artefact analysis and I see a LOT of broken plates so it’s lovely to see them whole for once 😆 The base marks can give you a good idea of the age as they often changed over time. The best reference for that is Geoffrey Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. Or I can just send you photos of the Spode pages
I should add that it was *massively* important to the Victorians that they did things like having tea or dinner or even breakfast in the proper way, especially if there were guests. You needed to have the right china and the right types of cups and plates and all the other accouterments to show you were genteel. Even people in grinding poverty and slums were desperately trying, sometimes even with Spode. Having that many teacups would have been a status symbol, though possibly also just a modern collector gone wild 😆

It originally was a song sung by the Scottish about old friends having a drink and recalling the adventures they had long ago, but later through time was sung at Hogmanay by the Scottish people to say "good-bye" to the old year and "welcome" in the new year. The song was actually sung well before Rabbie Burns released the poem in 1788. He based it on an old Scottish folk song.

It’s a common sign used for it ages in India, and meant only good things until it was used out of context by you know who….. and now many cultures which found it and still do find it to have a wonderful meaning have to explain themselves, I think that’s awful. I was in it painting forum, and a person had incorporated it into her dot painting, and people were going crazy insulting her and saying bad things when they don’t really know the origins of it at all. Investigate before you speak people.

Never in my life would I have thought watching someone unpack a few containers of china would be fun, but Michael, you made it delightful. I would nest all the teacups and put them in the 7 drawers at eye height - not the most interesting to look at. Keep all the china there and just tent it during the remainder of the renovation. I think Stephanie is going to be jealous.

Not sure if someone else has said it but the 3 handled cup is for Wassailing, old English tradition. My wife and I use Spode china everyday. She loved this vlog.
That kitchen! I can't wait to see it completed. So much work! I imagine it preyed on everyone's mind at the chateau - having such a grand but derelict space. Sealing the patio above was such a huge undertaking but so necessary to get to this point. Congratulations on that great find.
I would imagine every completed room renovation or restoration is considered a triumph for them. Between the Château and the combat they have contact for the next century lol just kidding makes wonderful watching on our end.
Stating the obvious here, but it will all need very careful washing before you use it. Not in a dishwasher either as it won't survive. The service is beautiful and you have some very rare pieces there. This is more than £600 worth by a long way. Just one dinner plate is worth hundreds. Oh Michael, the opening music brought me to tears. I love big band music, my parents would be 101 and 100 this year so that’s their music. I wanted to dance. The Spode is beautiful, it was meant to be. Wow!
I found the " Long Eliza" Spode plate on an Antique website. This plate alone was being sold for $275.00. You've hit the jackpot, Michael ! Description: "Long Eliza," perhaps benefitting from its catchy nickname, is one of Spode's best known patterns. Here she appears as she always does in medium blue transfer-printed pearlware. In the center scene, "Long Eliza," a tall slender female figure, pauses with her nearby charge, the "Jumping Boy." The scene is an uncluttered garden complete with a simple arched bridge in the background. Off to the right, a willow tree overhangs the scene gracefully filling the overhead sky. A tight band of ornament, similar to "egg and dart," frames this center scene -- which does not quite fill the well of the plate. The contrasting border, a combination of reserves and oriental fret devices, fills the flange of the plate spilling down into the well. The six reserves include three with an exotic tree of life motif and three with additional "Long Eliza" garden scenes. While slightly smaller compared to later production, this 9 3/4 inch diameter was a standard size dinner plate in the 1820's and earlier. Lovely. The small figurine is Dresden Meissen likely a newer or 20th century piece. Welsh Dresser is a term known in regions of the U.S. but dresser is not always used everywhere, bureau or chest of drawers are also used. It’s always a pleasure to see you Michael!
Oh Michael, what a beautiful video! I was really excited as you pulled these beautiful dishes out of the boxes one piece at a time. That was so exciting, and I am amazed at your knowledge of how to use the special pieces of tableware. Now I have to have some of this beautiful tableware, whose motifs tell us so many stories about landscapes, beautiful buildings and the lives of people in ancient times. And what's more, it all fits wonderfully into the old (new) kitchen and into the large shelf cupboard. Everything is as if it was made for that purpose and just wasn't visible for a while, and you brought it back into the eye of the beholder. As if it had never been any different. My heart laughs and rejoices🙂

Michael I might have an explanation for some odd plates, cups and bowls. I have a set of mocca cups, they are smaller than ordinary coffe cups. Mocca is a type of coffe that was served about a 100 years ago. I f you have a set of inbetween sized plates they can be luncheon plates. I have some in my inherited Asiatic Pheasant set. At the same period we have dessert bowls in two sizes, large ones for puddings and smaller ones for ices or icecream. Finally the big threehandled mug could be a wassail cup. You are very lucky to have made the bargain of the century. Much joy, Katharina
In addition to checking into mocca (an excellent answer) also look at chocolate pots. Very possibly two names for the same thing? I’m no expert. But those small coffee cups and the shape of the coffee pot immediately made me think “chocolate.”
I was thinking the same thing wassail cup. Here we come a wassailing. Bringing good spirits to the orchards for a bountiful harvest next year. People go from door to door drinking to each others health and gathering people to join them in visiting the orchards. You'd be quite drunk at the end lol What is wassailing? The purpose is to encourage the spirits into ensuring a good harvest the following season. It takes place on the twelfth night after Christmas and involves a visit to a nearby orchard for singing, dancing, drinking and general merrymaking. Thank you for the memories!!! The thick edge pots are for celery / cucumber sticks the can be refrigerated before use to keep the vegetables from wilting. The Victoria's would of used ice. Probably to accompany the cheese course.

Best “haul” or unboxing video ever.
After reading a bunch of comments I just want to agree with using the best everyday. After I lost my first husband and remarried, I realized how important it is to use your best all the t8me. Make everyday be a special day. My second husband’s wife had saved all sorts of beautiful things to use in the new house they were building. She never got to use them as she was diagnosed with stage four cancer and died shortly thereafter.
It was a treat to see you unbox all the goodies. You should document your purchase and let us know about the rare pieces. It would be so fun to know the names of the odd pieces and their uses!

I’m watching this with delight. The stack of “bowls” with wide lips are what we would consider dessert plates. I’m so jealous of the warming bowl. I LOVE Spode, especially blue & white. I was in awe and rapture watching this. I can’t justify buying Spode in New Zealand. I lost quite a bit of stuff in the last swarm of earthquakes we had and one was a beautiful little Spode vase. I actually cried. I was watching you put stuff on shelves and thinking “ nooooo, blutac that down! Put that in the cupboard! I have my modern Wedgewood in felt in firmly closing bottom cupboards of my dresser. By the way £600 was an absolute BARGAIN for those, but they did go to a good home.

Im also from NZ and my first thought was the same, because I lost a lovely collection of china to earthquakes in the Manawatu years back, I opened the cupboard and out it all fell, I too cried, totally irreplaceable
As you get a little older remember-all these beautiful “antiques “ shouldn’t be hidden away and maybe never used. Treat yourself! Set a beautiful table with a linen cloth and your best dishes and cutlery. Have a feast! ❤
And have skons and sandwiches and cakes and deserts and have a full array of flowers and enjoy them with tea in the spring time.

Someone's collection of a lifetime has found the perfect home with the Pethericks where it will be loved and used. Congratulations on this brilliant purchase! I think the little pickle dish and the three handled toasting mug are my favorites. The little tiny teapot may be from a child's tea set.
It could also be a ladies individual set for having tea in her boudoir.
Can you imagine especially since Covid how people react to drinking out of that same vessel? People are so germ phobic today. They don’t realize that to develop an immunity to germs. You have to expose yourself to that in the first place.😮

The smallest bowls are “berry bowls”. The plates with the groves are for juicy meats so that when you slice them the juice doesn’t fill the plate. I love anything blue and white, always makes me smile! So, congratulations on your new treasures! What fun to use them in future meals and celebrations!
We used those grooved plated for the kids when they were at the stage that they didn't like their food touching or running together!

You should have 5 sizes of platters: the biggest is usually goose, next down is turkey, then a duck, then chicken and finally squab…….
Smaller tea pots were put in breakfast trays for the lady/ lord of the manor.
The plates with the cross shaped ridges on them are sandwich plates, perfect for afternoon tea. Also the three handled cup is known as a Tyg. 😊

Forgot to say, you came across a once in a lifetime haul of 100 year old Spode! Called being at the right place at the right time! I too love Spode. I have a medium size pitcher (new) and 4 new salad/sandwich plates, a set of 4 coffee mugs of different patterns also new. I thrifted some antique tea cups with saucers and then through Etsy found 2 more matching. So you are so blessed to have such a beautiful and large collection. Small dish with handle: My grandmother had one. She would place a large spoon in it after stirring soup, vegetables- anything boiled. USE this stuff as often as possible. Life is short. What a deal you got!

I’m an archaeologist who specialises in historic artefact analysis and I see a LOT of broken plates so it’s lovely to see them whole for once 😆 The base marks can give you a good idea of the age as they often changed over time. The best reference for that is Geoffrey Godden’s Encyclopaedia of British Pottery and Porcelain Marks. Or I can just send you photos of the Spode pages
I should add that it was *massively* important to the Victorians that they did things like having tea or dinner or even breakfast in the proper way, especially if there were guests. You needed to have the right china and the right types of cups and plates and all the other accouterments to show you were genteel. Even people in grinding poverty and slums were desperately trying, sometimes even with Spode. Having that many teacups would have been a status symbol, though possibly also just a modern collector gone wild 😆

You are absolutely correct. It originally was a song sung by the Scottish about old friends having a drink and recalling the adventures they had long ago, but later through time was sung at Hogmanay by the Scottish people to say "good-bye" to the old year and "welcome" in the new year. The song was actually sung well before Rabbie Burns released the poem in 1788. He based it on an old Scottish folk song.

Yes, and the native Americans had a similar symbol, called a whirling log design. It was to symbolize the 4 directions .
It’s a common sign used for it ages in India, and meant only good things until it was used out of context by you know who….. and now many cultures which found it and still do find it to have a wonderful meaning have to explain themselves, I think that’s awful. I was in it painting forum, and a person had incorporated it into her dot painting, and people were going crazy insulting her and saying bad things when they don’t really know the origins of it at all. Investigate before you speak people.

Hot water warming plates were made in Britain from the mid-18th century and were produced in metal, ceramic, or a combination of the two. The manufacture of ceramic warming plates increased in the 19th century as factory production and transfer-printed decoration brought affordable tableware to a mass market. In the days before electricity, hot water warming plates were a useful addition to any dining room, enabling food to be kept warm for longer than usual. I would nest all the teacups and put them in the 7 drawers at eye height - not the most interesting to look at. Keep all the china there and just tent it during the remainder of the renovation. Not sure if someone else has said it but the 3 handled cup is for Wassailing, old English tradition. My wife and I use Spode china everyday. She loved this vlog.
That kitchen! I can't wait to see it completed. So much work! I imagine it preyed on everyone's mind at the chateau - having such a grand but derelict space. Sealing the patio above was such a huge undertaking but so necessary to get to this point. Congratulations on that great find.
I would imagine every completed room renovation or restoration is considered a triumph for them. Between the Château and the combat they have contact for the next century lol just kidding makes wonderful watching on our end.
Stating the obvious here, but it will all need very careful washing before you use it. Not in a dishwasher either as it won't survive. The service is beautiful and you have some very rare pieces there. This is more than £600 worth by a long way. Just one dinner plate is worth hundreds. Many thanks to the antique dealer for recognising someone who will love and care for these fabulous pieces. Well done Michael, bargain of the century. 😃

Oh Michael, the opening music brought me to tears. I love big band music, my parents would be 101 and 100 this year so that’s their music. I wanted to dance. The Spode is beautiful, it was meant to be. Wow!
I found the " Long Eliza" Spode plate on an Antique website. This plate alone was being sold for $275.00.

"Long Eliza," perhaps benefitting from its catchy nickname, is one of Spode's best known patterns. Here she appears as she always does in medium blue transfer-printed pearlware. In the center scene, "Long Eliza," a tall slender female figure, pauses with her nearby charge, the "Jumping Boy." The scene is an uncluttered garden complete with a simple arched bridge in the background. Off to the right, a willow tree overhangs the scene gracefully filling the overhead sky.
A tight band of ornament, similar to "egg and dart," frames this center scene -- which does not quite fill the well of the plate. The contrasting border, a combination of reserves and oriental fret devices, fills the flange of the plate spilling down into the well. The six reserves include three with an exotic tree of life motif and three with additional "Long Eliza" garden scenes.
While slightly smaller compared to later production, this 9 3/4 inch diameter was a standard size dinner plate in the 1820's and earlier.

It occurs to me as you unwrapped the two thick-sided cups (that you thinkt may go with a pitcher and basin set) that the smaller cup of the two is for a round bar of shaving soap. Lovely. The small figurine is Dresden Meissen likely a newer or 20th century piece. Welsh Dresser is a term known in regions of the U.S. but dresser is not always used everywhere, bureau or chest of drawers are also used.

Oh Michael, what a beautiful video! I was really excited as you pulled these beautiful dishes out of the boxes one piece at a time. That was so exciting, and I am amazed at your knowledge of how to use the special pieces of tableware. Now I have to have some of this beautiful tableware, whose motifs tell us so many stories about landscapes, beautiful buildings and the lives of people in ancient times. And what's more, it all fits wonderfully into the old (new) kitchen and into the large shelf cupboard. Everything is as if it was made for that purpose and just wasn't visible for a while, and you brought it back into the eye of the beholder. As if it had never been any different. My heart laughs and rejoices🙂

Michael, FYI re Jen Moon is hand raising a tiny little mouse she found in her barn that fell out of the nest. Today she had a photo of her using a tiny paint brush to give the little mouse milk because it is that small. It would be a wonderful story for her or you to write a book about the little mouse’s story. I can see the illustrations in my minds eye. ❤
Michael I might have an explanation for some odd plates, cups and bowls. I have a set of mocca cups, they are smaller than ordinary coffe cups. Mocca is a type of coffe that was served about a 100 years ago. I f you have a set of inbetween sized plates they can be luncheon plates. I have some in my inherited Asiatic Pheasant set. At the same period we have dessert bowls in two sizes, large ones for puddings and smaller ones for ices or icecream. Finally the big threehandled mug could be a wassail cup. In addition to checking into mocca (an excellent answer) also look at chocolate pots. Very possibly two names for the same thing? I’m no expert. But those small coffee cups and the shape of the coffee pot immediately made me think “chocolate.”
I was thinking the same thing wassail cup. Here we come a wassailing. Bringing good spirits to the orchards for a bountiful harvest next year. People go from door to door drinking to each others health and gathering people to join them in visiting the orchards. You'd be quite drunk at the end lol
What is wassailing? The purpose is to encourage the spirits into ensuring a good harvest the following season. It takes place on the twelfth night after Christmas and involves a visit to a nearby orchard for singing, dancing, drinking and general merrymaking.

I would be so excited unwrapping those beautiful spode pieces ! Your magnificent hutch is the perfect display piece for those gorgeous blue and white gems. Spode is my favorite thing but I never find any in Massachusetts. I'm so jealous !
