Absolutely great video! Ive had my "off grid" library on micro SD cards. But its all survivalist specific, I cant believe all if wik is only 60 gbs crazy. Thanks for another timelessly insightfful video
FYI, you shouldn't rely on micro SD cards for this kind of backup storage. All NAND storage (such as microSD cards, eMMC, flashdrives, SSDs, etc..) will see data loss from long term cold storage (being stored without being power). I recently had to sort out 8 SD cards that had been used about 4 years prior, and 2 of the 8 were completely corrupt. You should either make sure to plug them in once every 8-12 months, or use a magnetic storage like external hard drives, as those can handle long term storage much better.
I have a very strong positive opinion on knowledge, no matter the situation. Buy a dog? Buy the handbook. Buy a camper van, buy the handbook. Going to have surgery, watch the TH-cam videos on the surgery first. So I like this very much. Funny thing about my love of knowledge, having grown up watching Gilligan's Island I learned a few things about being stranded on a desert island. 1) it's the best life to live when you have 2) all the books that cover the HOW TO for all the needs you encounter. The Professor always knew what to do, because he had the text book in hand that detailed what he needed to know, all he really had to know was that the answer was there for him to read.
Great info! Knowledge prep will be a popular theme to have for future episodes and it adds variety as well. Not like you haven't done a great job on that already. Looking forward to more of these! Great job!
Thanks Coco. Yes, I would like to do more of these videos. I don't normally do videos that feature that many computer videos. Was the format good in your opinion? I tried to splash in non-computer videos with ones of my File Explorer / browser. I didn't want it to come across as too much of a boring academic tutorial video.
Definitely. I was hoping that people would like this topic, because I would definitely like to make it a series that can be added to. All using the same MicroSD card. So far so good!
Hi guys....I am NOT an expert on this subject, but I can download a ton of topographic information to PDFs for free. Go here: nationalmap.gov/ustopo/ .....I don't know much about it other than this thread made me do some searches to see what I could find. @TheUrbanPrepper - Maybe a good topic for a future video?
it would be nice and helpful to add the apk. file to the microsd card. so if you have to pass the card along to a person without the app they can download it off the card itself
awesome! this is something that I have been thinking about for a while now. this is even the reason why I recently bought an android phone. but I am not as computer literate as you are. thanks again.
This was excellent! We need to keep thinking about information-storage, because it's just about the most important thing you can think of, that isn't covered heavily within the community. :-) Keep up the good work!
Cool stuff TUP. It never occurred to me that an offline copy of Wikipedia was even possible. I can think of several scenarios where this would be very helpful. Thanks.
Downloading it eats my data, like 100gb is like 10% of my data plan. And it would take days for it to download. Wished someone out there would already have the data downloaded and sold it on a thumb drive for a couple bucks.
The file isn't updated often - around every 4-6 months - but it's current enough for most medical issues. By the way, the SD card can be plugged into an OTG USB port of a phone. it can be saved to a flash drive too.
I know this video is old and the app is still on the Google Play and Apple App store, you shouldve had more views on this video than what you have right now. I will share this video. Thanks for this informative video.
Thanks for this one. Yes I've donated to Wikipedia a few times since they started accepting bitcoin. I'll do so again once I download a fresh copy. My current copy is from 2012. Thanks for the "how to".
I just finished my download, if the world goes to shit because of COVID-19 I want to have the knowledge of humanity with me! I did the one with all media, I figure if I need to identify edible mushrooms or berries, or need to build a shelter etc.. pictures will help!
Thanks Daniel. I try really hard to reply to as many people as I can. With close to 400 videos, it is really hard. But with newer videos, I definitely try to allocate time to communicating with viewers. That's the best part of TH-cam for the Prepping Community: Collaboration. Thanks for your support!
Hi! I also recommend keeping a copy of few secret recipes of known fast food/restaurant favorites that might help satisfy the cravings when the apocalypse kicks in. 😉 Best,
How often is the Wikipedia information on the kiwix page updated? Would you need to repeat the full 60+gb download periodically to make sure your data stays current, or can you just download patch files with recent updates or something?
where is the download Wikipedia button? it just sends me directly to their website, but it looks different. maybe it's been updated since?? please help, not sure where to go to dl wiki. thanks!
Hey Cliff. I love your videos, & your take on things. Do you have (or will you do) a video on the best emergency radios? PS I'm in Ottawa, Canada, & Obama's here for a summit. Traffic nightmare! ...joy...joy lol
Go to www.kiwix.org/en/download/ and download the app for your OS. Then just use the link on the web page that says "download ZIM files separately." and search for the Wikipedia version that suits your needs. The full English version is a 82GB zim file. Hope that helps.
Hello I put a wikipedia zim file of 14 gb b on an external sd of 62 gb but I do not care about the application kiwix in my android 5.1 sm- j7 to be thanks
Here in Tunisia it happens sometimes that DSL does not work and it happens more often that one's 4g credit is exausted while you are one the move and this Kiwix could be very practical.
Hey UP, thanks a lot for the info. Did you get a chance to get that map app I told you about on FB? It would be awesome if there was a way to only dl new info and changes after you do the first dl since it takes so long. Knowing how crazy I am I would want to do it once a month lol.
I try to do that to but I always discover more stuff so it often get's into the 1000s.. I hope I don't lose my amazon privilidges. If my significant other plays hardball. I put a complete BoB together with high quality stuff in less than 3 month.
You're welcome. Yes, there are a lot of other things you could add to this list. Maps would be a main one. Heck, you could even add downloads of certain TH-cam videos.
Unfortunately no. The app doesn't really control the downloading of the ZIM's. It just does the displaying of them. That would be an awesome feature for Kiwix to integrate, perhaps at 2:00am when the device is on Wi-Fi.
TheUrbanPrepper true, but still awesome video and great information. This, even if not used very often could give me peace of mind and plenty of entertainment at an airport for example... Time to go hunting for those extra microSD's that I haven't seen in a while!
Hello! Can you make an updated video on this, please!!!! I tried to follow the steps but the website doesn't look the same as the one in this video. Please and Thank You!
This is really awesome. However, I don't think this exact process is possible with an iPhone. The Kiwix app exists for apple and after downloading, it looks like I can download 'books', like from the cloud, from iTunes and it looks like from some other way that says 'download task'. When I click on 'cloud' it does bring up a TON of resources that I can download to be used offline, including Wikipedia. So now I need to figure out if that's ALL of Wikipedia, or if it's just certain pages or what. But, this'll be a great start! Thanks for the info!!
You can pick up a used or inexpensive Android phone just for this purpose. As others have stated there are other offline docs that can be downloaded for reference.
TheUrbanPrepper I'm downloading what appears to be all of Wiki. It says it has '5.1M articles'....that sounds about right! It says it's gonna take about an hour and a half to download so I'll let ya know how it looks. It's 16.94 gigs. I have A LOT of space on my phone so this won't phase me at all.
That works too. I just try not to do it directly from my smartphone, because I'm always worried about somehow getting dropped from Wi-Fi and then having it count against my data. :)
128Gb??? get two 2Gb USB thumb drives or a 1Tb portable external hardrive for $200 or $350 for 3Tb, thats 3000 Gb, think about how much you can save on that....and with multiple backup laptops ( some kept for safe keeping) and multiple copies of the master 1-3tb external hard drive or thumbdrives you can have an immense library which can be shared, your own small internet if you save at least 20 Gb. seems not practical but the potential as a resource in a permanent off grid is incomparable. Wikipedia is only the small tip of the iceberg.
Download failed after 44.6 G had been downloaded. Anyone else have that problem? So now I'm left with starting over again and waiting another 30 hours. ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

The beauty of torrenting files is that you can select the download speed to avoid being a bandwidth hog and you can stop and restart downloading whenever you want. You don’t have to download the entire file at once.

I can't believe this doesn't have more views. This is such a fantastic idea.
Videos like this is why I like to refer to your channel as the "Q-Branch for preppers." Great video, Cliff. This'll definitely come in handy.
biography of linda carter is essential in a grid down situation!
I totally agree. She's a must for my Morale Module.
Sent here from Kris. Thanks so much you are also deserving of the Prepper video of the year 🏆. Please accept your award.
For anyone trying to do this today, all you have to do is download the app and pick which download you want, it’s so much easier now!

Mind...BLOWN that all of Wikipedia fits into 60g. I know what today's research and shopping will feature! thanks for the upload.
I Downloaded Kiwix for iPhone and it only takes up around a Little less than 18GB
(German Version). I have it on my iPhone
Another valued resource would be a complete set of digital Rand McNally road or topographical maps. Cheers
Definitely. I was hoping that people would like this topic, because I would definitely like to make it a series that can be added to. All using the same MicroSD card. So far so good!
I was thinking something along the lines of survival handbooks
I have downloaded on my Ipad an app called "YouNeedAMap" that is an offline map of the continental US, don't know if it exists for any other devices
Hi guys....I am NOT an expert on this subject, but I can download a ton of topographic information to PDFs for free. Cool stuff TUP. It never occurred to me that an offline copy of Wikipedia was even possible. I can think of several scenarios where this would be very helpful. Thanks.
Offline really does save my Data Plan !
Great idea !
Nice! My data plan gets eaten up by watching too many TH-cam videos. :)
Downloading it eats my data, like 100gb is like 10% of my data plan. And it would take days for it to download. Wished someone out there would already have the data downloaded and sold it on a thumb drive for a couple bucks.

Marvelous video .. better speaker ... explained very nicely and authentic data ... full coverage.. boss please make more videos
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I'm continuing to crank out new videos on emergency preparedness.
@@TheUrbanPrepper Keep Going on ... we wish you best of luck
They should make a book of Eli type movie but the guy is carrying around Wikipedia or all human knowledge. Hahaha
LOL!!
My brother thought that’s basically what the movie was, and then I told him he was carrying a bible and he just shook his head...
I know this video is old and the app is still on the Google Play and Apple App store, you shouldve had more views on this video than what you have right now. I will share this video. Thanks for this informative video.

this is amazing such a great prep and idea!!!! I'll look forward to seeing more in the possible series? !!!!
Wow! Had no idea you could download the whole thing. Very cool.
I just finished my download, if the world goes to shit because of COVID-19 I want to have the knowledge of humanity with me! I did the one with all media, I figure if I need to identify edible mushrooms or berries, or need to build a shelter etc.. pictures will help!
Looking at the comments I have to say you're awesome for replying to most of them. Thanks for great videos and for valueing feedback.
Thanks Daniel. I try really hard to reply to as many people as I can. With close to 400 videos, it is really hard. Great instructional video Cliff. I'm definitely going to do this.
Thank you, Scott! It's fairly easy to do, and SO valuable.
Hi! I also recommend keeping a copy of few secret recipes of known fast food/restaurant favorites that might help satisfy the cravings when the apocalypse kicks in. 😉
Best,
Please do more of this kind of videos!!! Absolutely outstanding to quote fellow gundog4314.
That's a blood brilliant idea. Have been keeping an old cd version of encarta (remember that?!) around for much the same reason. Will be upgrading!!
Awesome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
How often is the Wikipedia information on the kiwix page updated? Would you need to repeat the full 60+gb download periodically to make sure your data stays current, or can you just download patch files with recent updates or something?
Would actually be nice if this was a thing.
This is one of your best vids! Thanks!
this is the best tool for offline situation
Very nice thank you for taking the time to teach us all
Nice, and well explained! This will help alot thanks!
where is the download Wikipedia button? it just sends me directly to their website, but it looks different. maybe it's been updated since?? please help, not sure where to go to dl wiki. thanks!
As always, super helpful Vid. Thanks.

Perfect Turorial
Will all of the internal hyperlinks work? This would be great for flying, because I can get lost in Wikipedia for hours!
Yes, they work! :)
(For iOS)
Im not sure with android
Go to www.kiwix.org/en/download/ and download the app for your OS. Then just use the link on the web page that says "download ZIM files separately." and search for the Wikipedia version that suits your needs. The full English version is a 82GB zim file.

I am downloading using a mobile and its on "pause" and I can't find a resume button anywhere. Can anyone please help me out?
Hey TUP, I was wondering if there is any free prepper software out there that you can recommend? Maybe even make a video?
Hey UP, thanks a lot for the info. Did you get a chance to get that map app I told you about on FB? It would be awesome if there was a way to only dl new info and changes after you do the first dl since it takes so long. Knowing how crazy I am I would want to do it once a month lol.
Great video. Thanx. Any thoughts (or maybe a video) on safely storing SD-cards (and devices) protected from EMP?
I can look into doing a video. That would be interesting. Just not sure how to properly test it.
How much a month do you spend on prepping? You don't have to be too specific but is it in the 10s, 100s or 1000s
Probably in the 100's.
I try to do that to but I always discover more stuff so it often get's into the 1000s.. I hope I don't lose my amazon privilidges. If my significant other plays hardball. I put a complete BoB together with high quality stuff in less than 3 month.
Do you plan to periodically update the Wikipedia download version you have?
Yes. I have a few more videos planned in relation to grid down data backups. I'll ensure that Wikipedia is updated with each new video.
Thanks for sharing! This is a great idea and am interested to see if there are other resources that can be downloaded for offline consumption.
You're welcome. Yes, there are a lot of other things you could add to this list. Maps would be a main one. Heck, you could even add downloads of certain TH-cam videos.
I guess this is a dumb question but how do you download TH-cam videos?
Perfect idea for the apocalypse that is not coming lol
Armando Schneider oh this aged like milk!
Some of this info is outdated. I was still able to download Wikipedia and the apps. The Wikipedia file is quite a bit larger now, 93 GB.
Does the phone app auto updates the files as Wikipedia and other wikis update their content?
Unfortunately no. The app doesn't really control the downloading of the ZIM's. It just does the displaying of them. That would be an awesome feature for Kiwix to integrate, perhaps at 2:00am when the device is on Wi-Fi.
TheUrbanPrepper true, but still awesome video and great information. This, even if not used very often could give me peace of mind and plenty of entertainment at an airport for example... Time to go hunting for those extra microSD's that I haven't seen in a while!

great info... thanks
You are welcome, Rex!

Great video, thanks
Can you post more vids and thanks for this vid very helpful for edc

TheUrbanPrepper I'm downloading what appears to be all of Wiki. It says it has '5.1M articles'....that sounds about right! It says it's gonna take about an hour and a half to download so I'll let ya know how it looks. It's 16.94 gigs. I have A LOT of space on my phone so this won't phase me at all.
I downloaded the whole wikipedia on 2016 and it around 60GB plus and use offline
Why can't you just download it straight to the micro sad card?
That works too. I just try not to do it directly from my smartphone, because I'm always worried about somehow getting dropped from Wi-Fi and then having it count against my data. :)
I carry a reduced size version on Wiki on my keychain thumbdrive.
I carry THE WHOLE german Wikipedia on my iPhone (around 18GB)

Just got my dedicated card went with 200GB card, using a multi purpose adapter that will work with my phone and any computer. www.ncix.com/detail/startech-microsd-to-usb-3-0-a2-125163.htm as a techy I will format it so it can boot with a OS so it will work on a computer with a dead HD.
My version takes up 11.77GB without images 😃
Good
iPhone sheeps dying inside lol
can you do the same thing with youtube?
Hmmm... I doubt it. Video files are HUGE. It would be cool though!
how about a external hard drive?
65 GB !? wow, the more i know!
WTF this is great thanks for posting this but keep in mind Wikipedia is not 100% accurate
I don't know if you are aware of this but the same can be said for any other encyclopedia out there. The main grip with wikipedia usually is more that anybody can edit it for laugh and giggles.
Yes but it will be better than nothing an a situation without internet
Ok, found them lol
Buy... SD... card ok.
people complaining... lol... download anything BUT Wikipedia... fake nonsense.
also I need a shoutout
