Ustad Raees Khan the ultimate maestro👍.
FYI - At 8:49 is the mention of true legend of Mansoor Hallaj who preferred to be hung at the gallows rather than be forced into subservience by the constrictions of the religious order of the day.

Puri wahada tul wajood aik hadees kursi pr latki hoi hy... "mn hath ban jata hon, mn paon ban jata hon"
Aur mazzy ki baat wo puri hadees orhty bhi nahn hain... Kyon puri hadees sufiism se moot hy..

Man, thank you so much for bringing this gem back to me. I didn't pay attention to this one back then. Thank you once again. I really like the way you are exploring songs that are not for the untrained ears and your usual audience and hence the real treasure of CokeStudio. Thanks again man.

At least two generations have learnt from them and still learning.

Thse 10mins felt like I was elevated to some othe wold and nothing else mattered and her voice and those brilliant lyrics left me in tears. She is without a doubt the greatest Female vocalist of all time. She is for female singers what Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan was for male singers. The best of the best. Ever need to get into trance just listen to her, sh always touches ur soul and takes u to another world she is loved by Billons, she is also known as the Queen of Sufi Music. Fun fact Jada Pinkett Smith is a big fan of Abida even visited her concert in US few years back and haveshared her music couple of times.

Ustaad Raees Khan is the Sitaar player here.. Ustaad, a title that means Teacher/Master, only given to musicians/singers that have complete mastery over their skill.. you really have to earn it in Pakistan!
Anyhow.. this kalaam (spiritual poetry/song) is from the pov of a Sufi (spiritual wanderer/a person who looks inward to discover Khudi or 'self').. simply put.. once you start looking into your 'self'... there comes a point where you realize that we (as feeble humans) are nothing without our creator (God).. so eventually you, your 'self' and 'me' (basically terms used for ego) vanish and all that's left is He (God)

You say you're not religious but that's kinda the message of the song. It's a belief that you can't find enlightenment, or religion, or God, unless you let go of yourself and your worldly worries and devote yourself to the search of soul within. Great reaction as always ❤️

The "Sitar" is the gem of Hindustani Classical music and merged with Sufi music it is ethereal and mystical. The legend Abida Parveen jugalbandi with Ustaad playing sitar is absolutely stunning in this Sufi piece. Can't wait for you to react to "Agam" band from Kerala, India to show the fusion of Carnatic classical muci with contemporary musical instruments. Everything is absolutely stunning in music.

Islam is religion which explains unified reality of universe and Sufism is the part of Islam which explains an individuals real time relationship with this collectively unified reality which exists within heart and soul beyond all those conflicts and contradictions of human understanding.
This Poetry is beyond the capacity of translation into any other language as it uses Sufi terms more than words of a language.
    peace!

@jim - interesting to see your reaction. I presume this is new to you, but thought I’d share some background.
Sufism (is like a strain of Islam with a lot of Hindu influences… references like ‘Hari’ and ‘mandir’ come up a lot … and has a very liberal outlook if I may. They relate with god in ways very similar to what’s also found on the Hindu side of the house … a relationship with god like a pure true hearted lover even (no adultry :) .. sufi music, poetry and art are profoundly beautiful and mesmerizing.
And I agree with you, Abida Parveen has a gift. She sings straight to your soul.

If you are not religious, then this is a great advantage. The empty cup has the capacity to receive; the full cup is already full and has no room to receive. With this gig, you have to leave behind all that you know, even religion. It, too, is a stumbling block. ‘God’, too, has to go.
