A good example of what guys with long hair experienced in that time is the scene in the 1969 movie "Easy Rider" when the two bikers and their friend stopped at a local diner during their cross-country trip. The local good ol' boys and a cop sitting at a nearby table started making derogatory remarks about them to each other about their long hair, asking themselves if they were women, the cop saying something like, "I don't know if I should arrest them or **** them" while the others chuckled and smirked. The biker characters promptly decided to leave before even ordering any food.
When Bob wrote this song he still hadn't achieved national success (albeit one song in '69 that climbed to 16 on the charts) . It would be another 6 years after writing this song before that happened. He was in the music biz for 9 years at the time he wrote this song after quitting the music biz a few years earlier due to lack of success to try going to school before dropping out after a year. The original version of this song is on an album that Seger put out in '73, which bombed of course. The version you are listening to is the live version that he put on his "Live Bullet" album in '79. That album went gold and he finally achieved national success at age 31, after 15 years of being in the music biz playing in different bands over the years in and around the Michigan area.

I was there very close to the stage. I was 17. At one point Bob says to the crowd to take it easy up front here.. Had he not said that, I believe fights were about to happen. Bob calmed everyone down with just those words. I have seen Bob over 100 times. Ann Arbor Michigan man, not far from where I have lived for most of my life.

"Is that a woman or a man" is a reference to reactions to his long hair in Bible Belt areas of his travels. Most men with long hair at the time had similar experiences. Restaurants would have signs which said, "Hippies use the back door." Of course, that door was locked. Of course, they had the option of cutting their hair. Other forms of bigotry can't be so easily eluded. But the question he was asking was, "Why should he have to?"

I heard this song in 2000 on the radio and it made me a Bob Seger fan for life. Most performers ignore singing about the loneliness of being a star. He embraced it and admitted it. Beautiful.
'The Fire Inside' 'Night Moves' 'Against the Wind.' There are no bad songs when it comes to Mr.Seger.

Seger had very long hair when he was younger and that must have been why he got the comments. I liked to see your expression when you heard him unexpectedly pour his emotions out. Please speak Lord's name respectfully. And I appreciate your insight into how the famous life has is loneliness and frustrations. God bless you

Back in the day, guys with long hair often heard those kind of remarks 'Is that a guy or girl?' I know I sure as he## did., just because I'm a guy that had hair to his shoulders all through high school, back in the 70's.
And yes, this was a live version, I'm not even sure an actual studio version exists!

We have a Australian singer Jon English who did a cover of this song. He's sadly gone now but his rendition is just beautiful pls give it a go. I do actually like Bob Seger I've been listening to him since this album was fresh but I really like the Jon English cover. Pls give it a go Australians don't seem to be on TH-cam this man is talented & deserves some accalades

OMG I love your face at the end. By the way the best way to listen to Bob is with your eyes closed. Lose yourself in the music.

QUESTION FOR JAYY : Are you beginning to see why most of us "old"people have not heard any music in the last 40 years that we really like? late 50's thru early 80's is a hard act to follow
