Amen Amen!! Beautiful definition and explanation of joy in Christ. When we say " choose joy" we take away the grace given to us through the holy spirit.

What a definition of what really joy is. God bless you, Pastor, we need more preachers like you in this world.

Thanks for this. So often, I've heard it argued that joy is not an emotion, and in reading the Scriptures, a definition of joy that is absent of emotion has seemed utterly absurd to me, based on how people in the Scriptures behave when they experience it.

Awesome explanation! It saddens me that so few Christians seem to understand the importance of seeking this joy.

+Bryce Wiegandt Well, it is obviously very difficult to be joyful if a person believes that he/she must constantly battle their sins or else run the risk of ending up in hell. But that is what John Piper teaches, isn't it? It is also very difficult to be joyful if a person believes that his or her loved ones are at risk of ending up in hell. Genuine joy only arises and stays with us when all negative, harmful, stressful beliefs are dropped.

      Hi Eva,
Thanks for your thoughts. It is tough be happy and joyful when we are in the middle of trials, suffering and/or hardship.
I think the way forward when we are in the middle of such circumstances is to pray for Gods help to gain contentment and joy in Christ. We must seek it frequently - especially when things are bad, especially when life throws a curb ball at us.
I say this as someone who is the only Christian in their family, I say this as someone who does wrestle with sin like the next person and I say this as someone who's mum had cancer and by Gods grace was healed.
People do go throw far worse things than me, so I don't want to pretend to know their pain. But I do believe - both from experience and from God's word that joy in Christ amidst such hard times is possible and is needed to get through them :)
God gives us what we need to get through the trials and difficulties which we inevitably face. And that is one of the many things that make Him a good God :)

Joy is experiencing the Presence of the Lord.,and ""total""joy will be changed to immortality, and we all know that you and I have NO control over the Masters power.

At Nehemiah 8 v 10 it tells us "The joy of God is our stronghold" Jesus delighted to do his
Father's will. (Psalms 40 v 8) If we have the same attitude, we will find joy in rendering
sacred service to God. Like Jesus, we will be unselfish givers, and this will make us happy.
(Acts 20 v 35) Fervent prayer to God helped to prepare Jesus for tests of faith. He was
praying when John baptized him. Jesus prayed for an entire night when he chose his apostles.
(Luke 6 v 12---16) And what bible reader is not impressed with Jesus' heartfelt prayers on
the last night of his earthly life? (Mark 14 v 32--42 and John 17 v 1---26) Are you a person
of prayer, as Jesus was? Approach God often, linger in prayer, seek the direction of holy
spirit, and be quick to accept that direction when it becomes evident. A strong relationship
is vital, especially in these troubled times in which we now live. We are urged to draw ever
closer to our God in prayer. (James 4 v 8)

i love and honour and thank God for Pastor John. in this video, at 6:55, Pastor John said that Galatians 3:1 says to rejoice in the Lord. those words are not found in Galatians 3:1. however, those words *are* found in Philippians 3:1. i believe Pastor John was referring to Philippians 3:1 when he mentioned Galatians 3:1.

Does anyone know the exact references he uses in Paul’s letters to come up with this definition? It’s not clear to me in Phil. Taking notes and would like to mark them in my Bible. Or is just an understanding from reading his letters? Thanks!

is there a part that explains we choose to let this process take place through obedience? If I choose to not read His word or choose to intellectually reject what I read I quench the Holy Spirit, I quench joy, I quench hope?

Really enjoyed this! Just a question: at 6:55, John mentioned about Galatians 3:1 saying rejoice in the Lord.. I'm wondering if I misheard the verse he's referring to, as Galatians 3:1 says this "You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly protrayed as crucified."
Thank you and God bless! :)

Unless one is truly born again ( not of route religious deeds) they lack the In welling of the Holy Spirit and joy is only a feeling of choices. Carnal joy It’s not spiritual, it’s intellectual emotion. They talk about it, know it but don’t experience it unless Jesus Christ indwells the born again Christian.

What do I do if I am not experiencing His Joy, contentment, nor peace? If it is the work of the Holy Spirit and not something that I can bring about then what am I to do?
