Cyberpunk Miata Build: The Chimera

- With V3.0 of this build I wanted to move away from the soft lines of the original Miata and create something much more menacing. In this video I tear down the rear end, and install a new FD Rx7 front end, earning the car it's new nickname, the Chimera.
The name Chimera comes from Greek mythology and is a fire-breathing hybrid with a serpent's tail, a goats body and the head of a lion. This represents the many different changes and parts from different vehicles that have gone into this car.
In this episode we start tearing down the car and so you'll see me take a lot of important pieces off the car, but most of these will be improved and reinstalled on the new build. One issue that I've had with this car is that it hasn't felt "cyberpunk" enough to me, and so I decided to strip everything off and start again from the ground up, this time adding even more details to make it feel like it belongs on a movie set.
Needless to say, this is only the first rough mock up so don't judge the finish, but get excited about what's to come.

It's a good thing this build being a constant evolution was one of the reasons the judges voted for it. They knew there was no way I was going to leave it the same for a whole year until the die cast came out. 😂

@@ProfessorHoots In the last call I had with them they estimate early 2015. It takes a whole year to go through all the design and get the die cast ready for mass production.

the fd front end swap on the miata honestly fits so well with the cyberpunk build
For sure. It's going to be a way better base to add all the extra cyberpunk details to than keep fighting with the NA front.
I agree! that FD front makes it look like such a sleek looking car. It's like how people take MR2s and make 'em look like baby Ferraris. It's a baby FD.... lowercase fd. LoL
I think a bigger central exaust tip would look better than just leaving the pipe end
Or multiple exaust tips in the center might look cool as well
I was thinking bigger and rectangular
@@quakxy_dukx that might look good as well, but in that case I would more lean towards a trapezoid with the longer side facing upwards
@@xil_ef8829 yeah, I didn’t mean an exact rectangle. Quadrilateral would’ve been a better word. I also saw on instagram that someone suggested a big rocketbunny diffuser which I think would go well with it

i was thinking a rectangular-oval ish shape in the centre.!
Also i dont think he had to wrap the exhaust to protect the LEDs, siince there will be plenty of air flowing around, although it does add to the aesthetic.
Like a fin exhaust similar to the one the Koenigsegg Regera had. Because if it had one that was similar in construction to a Nascar boom tube but flattened out to act as a diffuser in conjunction with the bumper that would be sick.
Love what you’ve been doing in this series, personally I can’t wait to see if you cyberpunk the interior fully.

Really curious to see what you do with the rear. I think that cutting off the lower "flaps" or whatever tf they're called looks great. Such a subtle change that made a huge difference and made the rear taillight look a lot more at home. Part of me is sad to see the Yoshimura muffler go, but I'm sure whatever you end up doing will look sick.

Cheers bro. Yeah funny how stripping the rear end down almost completely really made the minimalist looking light bar feel right at home.
I'll be adding a few pieces to it eventually to balance it out with the front end as I evolve that as well but I definitely want to try and keep as much of the stamped metalwork as possible.
Just when I thought I couldn't love this build anymore, my favourite front end is added.
It looks perfect as it is because if it was shaped to fit perfectly it wouldn't fit the dystopian look.

you are what i want to be when i have some money. I love that you're doing everything by yourself! Where im from, cars and car parts are very expensive so it'll take me a while.
You can start now. Money plays much less of a role than time and creativity. This whole front end swap cost less than $500 NZD by buying cheap second hand parts and being willing to spend a little time repairing them. Even my welder is the cheapest off the shelf Ozito welder you can buy and I use it more than my expensive TIG I got to replace it because it's so easy to use.
With my builds and the work I do on this channel I always try and keep everything as cheap as possible and achievable with simple tools. I know how expensive working on cars CAN be, but I'm trying to show that it can still have a low barrier for entry.
Mean as!!!! An amazing artist is never satisfied until you can put it down and say next project.... but that being said looking awesome FD works mean as.

Yeah rip it apart! Gotta love the design process. Been there many times. Spend months working on something and live with it for a while, thinking about all the ways to make it better. You learn new techniques, get new tools and become a more skilled craftsman. The next round you build it better, and then the next and next. Can't wait to see the progress!

A huge rear defuser would be really cool with a straight exhaust instead of the sideways one. And instead of the sharkfin sticking out, you could extend the fin with a actuator sticking out of the end controlling a very cool big spoiler with active DRS system

Rear end looks great with the taillight open like that and I’m looking forward to seeing the diffuser on the rear.

I wonder if people understand that things like this build take a LOT more than just sanding and mechanic skills. Shoot i have those. But the main thing is it takes a certain Artistry skill that I simply do not possess. I call myself a Modder. I can take something that exists and modify, but I can not create. I don't have that "vision" of what something can be. And that's special. This guy has it. And he is amazing.
For maintaining properly your exhaust tape you could use plumbing collar they are more adequate in high heat application than tyraps
I wanna also say that your creativity and vision are impressive you look convinced and working on a constant rythm and thats 90% of succes in car scene

Cheguei aos seus vídeos do Miata, através de buscas relativas do game Cyberpunk 2077. Teu projeto é insano e é muito legal acompanhar! Parabéns! Mas essa mudança de dianteira eu achei que foge do contexto do carro. Do jeito que estava, o que faltava na verdade era customizar aberturas de radiador. Uma "bocarra" mais abaixo, pra que inclusive você tivesse opção de colocar leda, caso preferisse, mas na parte de cima, daria espaço pra customizar uma barra de proteção estilo rally, que talvez você quizesse colocar luzes modernas ou adaptar o que você tirou antes. Pense nisso, sucesso no projeto✌🏼
