Notes: My fiddle is in baroque tuning in this video, which means it's normal if my notes sound half a tone lower than yours. Also I had to use my old camera this time, hence the lower image and sound quality.

I did not know that I needed this in my life! Esoteric fiddle techniques are usually so hard to find information on for proper technique! I would’ve never known this was called “Rullstråk”, or how to google how to do it properly and authentically. Hopefully you post many more videos like this! Thanks!
Totally seconding you on the fact that nerdy fiddling techniques aren't so easy to look for and find, even in the age of The Internet. Glad this one was inspiring to you !
An easy way to make this technique more accessible is to start calling it the "roll-stroke" in English.

@@EmelieWaldken While I always appreciate a language lesson (no sarcasm), I dont think "traditional Swedish rolling bow technique" is about to be as accessible, universal, or *catchy* as "roll stroke". The phonetic similarity is a convenient bonus.
But now I'm just being *semantic* ;p
How is it esoteric?
On cello, while you can do this with down-up bowing it can feel a bit laborious, in particular the upbow going from high to low stings can be difficult to play in a relaxed way. A more relaxed technique in this context is to roll around the strings using upbow when going from low to high strings, and downbow when going from high to low. I learned to do it that way for some passages of the Bach cello suites, and it makes a lot of sense to me, due to the baroque-folk connections.
Thank you for this explanation ! Indeed the "reversed" rolling bow seems a bit laborious to me, especially if needed to be played fast. But what you describe makes a lot of sense. I will try it !

Great timing! We started learning a beautiful piece from Hälsingland (From-Olles Sista komposition) in my spelemannslaget mitt yesterday that has a lot of this typical, baroque-esque arpeggiation in it. And the algorithm suggested this for me today. Now I know what to do!

On the cello you can also play it out of your shoulder, but that causes the risk to move too large, so that you don't get clean and controled apart bowings.We play bowings like your "rullstrak" (2 notes on 2 strings = mirored stringschanging, 3 notes on 3 strings = partly arpeggio, 4 notes on 4 strings = full arpeggio) starting from the right wrist, mainly from the fingers, mostly controled from the indexfinger and the pink.

The cello technique is largely the same, but you need to use some wrist/finger as well to cover the greater distance and maintain enough pressure on the bow. It might also feel a little awkward on cello, as the cello down bow naturally wants to cross to the lower strings instead of the higher ones.
As a lifelong cellist/bassist learning violin, the number of differences between them has been humbling to say the least. Perhaps the Barbie arm will help me with some of my violin issues
Thank you for that cello technical answer ! My path goes reverse as yours, having started cello only recently, and it still baffles me how this kind of technique can be done on this instrument. It feels so... unnecessary tiring somehow ^^' And I very much agree about the number of differences, despite being the same family of instruments.
PS: The Barbie arm is really ONLY for rullstråk. For pretty much every other style of playing, you want a smooth wrist on violin ;)
You are yourself playing another pattern of rullstråk in "Slängpolska från Mörkö" (one of the very firsts videos on your channel I think). And I myself learned another more classical one (just as you described) for the same tune.
The Mörkö slängpolska in question has just an even Bigger Parenthesis actually - up to 4 strings on fiddle. However, the adapted version on nyckelharpa is slightly different indeed =)
Sounds like Rullstråk could be used for Paganini's 1st Caprice!

I have been playing fiddle for almost 30 years and watched this video about a month ago and knew it was significant..
I have always played from my elbow and wrist using circles from my elbow and wrist movements while keeping my shoulder still for the most part. I have done pretty well but was lacking in power and would drive myself crazy trying to imagine patterns and planning complicated patterns but could never be smooth enough or versital frustrating.
Tonight I was playing one of these exercises for the first time and just kind of zoned out doing the three strings and trying to alternate between the top three then the bottom three and I saw it. Where you can either push an extra up bow when moving from low to high or change bow direction alternating an between a smiley face curve to an upside down smiley face.
I instantly began to play everything I know with perfect ease and without planning. Even things I could never get to work. I don't even know what happened.
This is like finding a treasure in a field you have been working for years.
I could not even figure out what I was not doing before. Literally like a key to a box of precious.
Thank you so much for sharing. I know that feeling, it's when a movement "clicks" somehow. And when one has struggled for a long time about it, it feels so magical. Sometimes things go back to not working after the "click", but at least we know how it feels and have an idea of how to get there. Hope you can keep that newfound ease and make it yours !
Agreed. I will use this lesson often. Also, I about 7 years ago, I had something go horribly wrong with my back and neck that captivated my entire life and had by about a year ago, had given away my fiddle because I could not practice because of the pain. About a year ago something else happened that freed up my neck to be able to move again freely. I had been concentrating as much as possible on my guitar playing and using what I learned about fretless strings to play slide guitar.
Since a year ago, I had 4 fiddles given to me by completly different people because I had truly mourned the loss of that part of me and was happy with what I had accomplished.
That day before I messaged you I had gone to pick up my first real voice. A rich beautiful fiddle. Like I did not even know existed.
So I was just listening to that instrument while I was doing this rullstrak excercise.
And presto. Thank you for reminding me and confirming, like any gifted teacher would, to expect that it may not come back as easy now that I am expecting that to just happen instead of being in the childlike state of suprizing discovery that made it happen.

I use something very similar alot because I tune my fiddle to open C so I can play chords easier, didnt know it had a name, your video is very helpful, ill try to pay attention to my form a bit more.
I'm violinist, not cellist, but i often saw cellist friends doing this type of bow effect, so i think it's totaly possible

Hello! Your video appeared in my feed, so this is the first I have seen from your channel. This is good teaching and I enjoyed watching. Can you tell me about your bow? At first glance I would think it to be a baroque bow, but it does not have that obvious outward bend.
Welcome ! It is a baroque bow, there are different shapes and mine isn't so bent, that's all =)
@@EmelieWaldken Listening to more of your playing and the tone you're producing, the baroque bow makes sense. I have used them, but it was a long time ago when I played in a baroque ensemble with actual baroque instruments. Different sound requires a different technique. Best wishes to you!

Nope it's just chords ;)
That would take some practice for an experienced chamber music player but I shall try, and it might fit some of the Bartok duos too!
It's very close to several classical/baroque techniques so I think you won't struggle much ! And yes, it can for sure be used in other folk repertoires !
@@EmelieWaldken I note also that you seem to be using a Corelli type bow. I hesitate to do that when playing Scottish and Irish traditional music but it might indeed improve the results! Occasionally I get the opportunity to play Swedish traditional music with my daughter. Very enjoyable.
@@michaels7889 I would say just try ! Try every combination of bow/instrument/strings, you never know what's gonna fit best and please your heart the most ;)

Yes absolutely, I can make a little nyckelharpa version of rullstråk ! It's not complicated, but a bit specific.
Flodens Död doesn't really fit into the rullstråk category actually, it's daj-stråk - a similar technique but not exactly the same. I might cover it some day, but Mia Marine explains it soooo much better than I do ^^

Rullstråk: Literally rolling stroke.
How is that any different from the arpeggio techniques that we can find in 17th century manuals? Is that simply the fact that the arm is somewhat tense?
The arm is not tensed, just dynamic. And there might not be big nor any differences at all with other techniques from other periods and regions... it's just a super common one in Swedish folk music. I never said it was unique for it ;)

Ps dear confused about the violim the picolo banjo has approximatly the same scale lenth as the full size violin. I said soprano banjo but I think I was missaten. Picolo banjo.

I've been avoiding teaching myself violin, I've had it two years now, and I just can't understand how you know where to put your fingers on the neck to get the chord you want. My tuner is finicky and so are my strings, but I WANT TO DO THIS ONE DAY. Ugh
Patience and dedication are the answer ! I've been playing for over 20 years, almost every day. One doesn't need to play that long to manage chords, but it just TAKES TIME. Hope you'll manage to find the patience and passion and go step by step towards your own violin playing =)

Yes there is ugh involved don't get me wrong youl have some finger and hand tiring exercises to do. Do not overdo the exercises! Just do a little then rest. Or you will need to take aspirin to relieve your achy hands! Good Luck!

It's written in the description, and said in the video : yes, I'm in baroque tuning.
Arpeggiating from bass to tenor, from near to far, is match more natural and easy for me - I do cello. I hear sounds but it’s hard for me to imagine how the violinists do Bach 4 notes chord, from far end to near. 😂

It's the name we give it in the Swedish folk scene, yes. But it's used in other styles of music under other names =)

I don't see how this is different from normal arpeggios like for example the one in bach's chaconnne from partita 2.
It's not which notes you play that make this technique, but the way you bow them. Also it's not exclusive to our Scandi folk repertoire =) Simply, it's very common here and it has a name.
@@EmelieWaldken Yes, I was talking about the bowing. The technique you showed is pretty much how I play these kinds of arpeggios. I just didn't find this very unusual.

I was very excited to find this video because when I started playing g a couple.if years ago I was told off so many times for playing from my shoulder! So now I know it's a thing! Brilliant teaching too! Makes me want to learn more!

@@carmelgibbons2949 It really depends on what you want to do. For most violin playing you will only use your shoulder to change strings, but for this technique the shoulder gets used much more !
Four string banjo uses violin strings. The ukulele is a miniature guitar. Complete different altogether. The soprano banjo can use full size violin strings. They are approximately of equal scale length. Take your old violin strings and slap them on your soprano banjo. Not sure of tuning been too long ago. The length of the ukulele strings may be similar to full size violin but remember what I said the ukulele is a miniature guitar without the two extra strings. That's all I'm worn out have a nice evening.

Everything on the violin is different from the guitar. They are two distinctly different instruments. Chords on a violin are called stops.yes there are chords on a violin but youspace fingers to approximate the chord shape rather than rely on frets. Its an imaginef spacing rather than litteral spacing. Thats as best I can describe it. Its been 40 yesrs since 4th grade violin class. Make that left hand really strech your webs! Then youl be ready for class. Rember have other begining violin students show you. Then get into a violin class. Be patient.bye
