For the chicken mesh rust, always ask for galvanized when dealing with buying any metal product that will be expose. It will not rust.

When there's a rain storm, the rain will still get in. I have a 4ft overhang (more than a meter) and rain still gets carried by rain storms. Its not as much as without the overhang but still rain does get in. Its not just rain though, sometimes its water splashes/particles which still can cause cold.

I have always see you hustle with chicken wire ate chain link..😮. brother use rabbit mesh wire the galvanised one green in colour.... it will save you from both those two you using
It's very strong no birds can get it or rodents
