Apple planted it's flag with the Newton in 1993; it was considered innovative at its debut, but it suffered from its high price and problems with the handwriting recognition element, its most anticipated feature. Apple struggled to find a new direction for the Newton, and when Steve Jobs returned to the company in 1997, he killed the product line.

And yet the Newton blazed the trail to the iPhone and iPad.

Has no one here tried the Meta Quest 3? You can do essentially everything he describes in this video (yes including hand tracking, looking at multiple windows, and using it as a virtual monitor for your computer), but it also has controllers which is extremely helpful for gaming, a huge game library that includes virtual reality and mixed reality games, and it isn't locked down so you can run homebrew on it if you want to. I get that you get better cameras and displays with the Vision Pro, but it seems to fail on the basics like app selection, especially video streaming apps (not even TH-cam is available) and games (yeah you can say it's not a gaming system, but it is a VR headset, let's be real, and the iPad isn't a gaming system either but it still has a decent library of them). Plus having to carry a cord connected to a big battery around with you is tacky and...unelegant, doubly so when even with that weight reduction the headset is still heavier than most other VR headsets. Ergonomics is not something that can or should be glossed over for a VR headset, and it's rather wild that Apple of all companies did so. It absolutely should not be lacking at the basics at a $3000 price increase over the Quest 3. It seems like Apple didn't take the opportunity to learn from others mistakes and instead arrogantly just went in blind with their usual "they know best" attitude.
And sure you can argue the app library isn't their fault when it's a new platform, buuuuut it kinda is. No one wants to develop on a platform that no one has or will have. Imagine if the original iPhone cost $3000. It would've been dead on arrival. This is a completely new product category (for Apple), making the first product literally their most expensive product in their entire product line (when comparing base models) is certainly a decision.

I have both the Meta Quest 3 and AVP. Meta’s displays come nowhere close to the AVP and for people like me who want the best possible visual experience there’s just nothing close to what AVP offers

@@AlexKasongo-j4yYou already have quest 3 and yet you buy a vision pro? Well it's your money anyways.
What I learned from other posts, they simple won't buy the vision pro because of it's very high price tag with less apps in it. They find it stupid if they buy it.
I also have quest 3 but I spent my $4000 (less) buying an Asus ryzen gaming laptop, asus 165hz monitor and 65-inch LG TV.
With this setup, my whole face is relaxed unlike a very heavy vision pro.
Critics believe that the high price and few apps is the reason why the vision is considered one of the flop techs in 2024.

Nothing beats a laptop with multiple monitors as far as productivity is concern.
You are only justify your $4000++ mistake to feel better.

@@SimpleLife2.000 wrong! Multiple monitors are a PITA. Even before the AVP when using a 4K monitor, I used it as a solo monitor as opposed to extending the desktop across two monitors; which is an awkward setup with a physical divide. You’re obviously trolling since you don’t use one, nor will, so you really have an unqualified opinion.
Go play your games. I’ll continue to be productive with my AVP workspace setup, which has paid for itself ten times over.

Great longer-term review, Griffin. Question on the iPhone use though -- if you're using Virtual Mac Display, and iPhone Mirroring to your Mac... aren't you able to interact with your iPhone from within Vision Pro? A bit inception, but unless they've removed device w/in a device, it seems like that would be possible? (I love iPhone mirroring, btw. When we get drag and drop and not just Universal Clipboard, it'll be even more useful.)

    • @dgriffinjones

You can iPhone mirror to your AVP with vision OS 2 and use your Mac virtual display at the same time. You cannot control your phone through the mirror app sadly, you physically need to use your phone , but at least you can see it clearly if you want

I did the demo of Vision Pro at my local Apple Store but it wasn’t great for one reason, I wear by-focal glasses and I think when they tested my glasses in their machine to see which lenses to put in them I think they didn’t take into account the bottom half of the glasses therefore everything was annoyingly out of focus. probably works if you don’t ware by-focal glasses but I can only guess. I’m going to try again but this time tell them what happened last time, Oh and the demo felt very very rushed. Also I was surprised that the field of view was so narrow, stopping me feel completely immersed, more like looking though a letterbox. Loved the interface, looking forwards to the future of this product, just not for me right now. Really great review, thank you, some great points you bring up.

Nice analysis and I think you nailed the strategy. This space will evolve a lot and Apple had to put its stake in the ground in 2024. In 10 years we will look at it in its original box and gush romantically about the concept through our Apple Vision Glass.

I’ve played better games on my PlayStation 2 over twenty years ago than these crappy mobile ports. Asphalt looks even worse than burnout 3 from 2004. They should focus on displaying not natively running when it comes to to games. Imagine AAA titles like RDR2 or FlightSim with a nice integration of VisionPro but the game runs on a of or console.

How could you not mention Synth Riders?!?! That is a proper console game built for the Vision Pro that runs amazing, has crazy good tracking, fully immersive including features not in the other versions, and is in Apple Arcade... Puzzling Places is another game on PSVR2, Quest, etc that's had its first version built for Vision Pro. All released months ago. Plus no mention of streaming PS5. Don't get me wrong, Apple's gaming is dogsh!t especially on VP, but it's not as bad as this video makes it out to be.

The `Innovator` segment of technology diffusion is 2.5% of the total. Innovators adopt technology before they know what others are doing with it.
The next segment is `Early Adopters`, the next 13.5%. Many TH-camrs are Early Adopters, targeting videos to the Early Majority. Early Adopters know the new technology’s uses, and are willing to spend high effort to learn it, long before there are any Idiot’s Guides.
The TH-camrs you watch are Early Adopters who bought way too soon.

    • @NeilLavitt
      @NeilLavitt 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

So many TH-camrs in the space are glorified infomercial creators. They know their space, rise and fall with the tide of sentiment and constantly fine tune their algorithm to maximise their viewership. Of course they rarely use it as they are too busy, dropping Apple for Samsung for the fifth time in five years or dropping the Apple Watch Ultra for the latest Garmin , not so smart watch.

      @@Unbathedwell said!
Apple created the hype bubble with VP and the result was horribly confused verticals of gen x people walking around New York with VP’s. Unintentionally, they turned this new product into a curious monstrosity. Then people realised how intentionally expensive it was and the pitfalls of looks over ergonomics magnified the grotesque TH-camrs early vision and so here we are. Apple has an over hyped product that is now just what they originally intended. A slow burn product… more than a hobby due to the future stakes but nevertheless, deliberately expensive.

Most apple sheep write about how great the products are because they need to justify their purchases to themselves then everyone else. The utility that it brings in no way justifys the price of an entire suite of apple products eg mac, iPhone and an iPad. It's great it works for you but the vast majority of people regard this device in two words. Overpriced Garbage.
