  • Longhope lifeboat disaster
On the evening of 17th March 1969, the 'Longhope' lifeboat T.G.B ON962 left Hoy in Orkney to attend to an emergency call. The Liberian cargo ship 'Irene' had been caught in a storm and needed assistance.
Having failed to respond to several radio messages, a search was launched for T.G.B. and her volunteer crew. Tragically, she was found, upturned, at 1.40pm the following day by Thurso’s lifeboat, all eight crew had been lost.
The loss shook the RNLI but particularly the community of Brims, Longhope who, in one night, had lost a third of their population.
In Memory to the crew of the TGB. RIP

We had the TGB as a relief Lifeboat in Whitby in the late 70's, the only boat I've ever been seasick on. God bless all our brave volunteers of the RNLI ⚓️

Can't believe this hasn't had a single comment. In a world of big numbers, eight may not seem much, but the loss was immense by ANY standards and must be felt to this day. RIP the crew.

A sad time indeed. I remember it well. My father and I stood on the keyside in Scrabster as the Thurso boat towed in the capsized Longhope boat. We were all hoping for the best but a diver soon told us there were no survivors. A big shout out to those who stepped up to continue Longhope's long tradition of RNLI service.

This fabulous, evocative music is the track "Still" by Beluga Lagoon.

      @@Orkney_Drone_Systems Pleasure, love the song.
I work for RNLI ( Volunteer) as a Heritage Research Officer, and have recently studied/reported on the Longhope Disaster. Came across this footage/music - a fine tribute to a fine Crew.

Thank you Steve. I actually gave the video to RNLI Longhope so they can use it in the museum. Unfortunately I had to change the music due to copyright. Still good though! Thanks for liking!
